Discovery Scanner [Weekly Update] - 29/03/2022

Allowing free setting of prices might even make it easier for newcomers to find them - I'd like to sell my spares, and not at price-gouging rates, but I equally don't want to sell them for 1 million to someone who's just going to privately resell them for 100 million so they need to be expensive enough to discourage that too.
An extreme solution would be to set a "resellable" flag yes/no to items you sell at the bartender, so that the buyer won't be able to re-sell them.

Also, please include an overview of active bartender trades at a carrier in the game journal, similar to the normal market, so third-party apps can actually facilitate finding good trades!
This is actually the most important thing related to carrier bartender trading. Third party apps are desperately in the need to do this.

When nobody knows where they can sell or buy their stuff the whole thing is kinda pointless. Everyone would profit.

Inara for example tries its best to keep track but simply cannot at the moment.

In regards to the bar tender and generally the NPCs standing around shouting out illegal activity to all and sundry…

*edited - Make the bar tender actually sell drinks (not necessarily to manifest them) to improve upon the interaction and menu system, so it becomes a jumping off point for material trading, or at least better illustrate they are a ‘material trader’ and don’t actually sell drinks.

At present the process feels clinical and more like spreadsheet management.

Another possibility is to also link it to illegal activity, to give it context, with the bar keep as a point of contact; where the tender asks what your interested in, demands a tip then points out an NPC who can provide that illegal mission.

If your rep / crime stats are too low the bar keep will not acknowledge you, and just sell you a drink. Possibly requires you being allied with a certain faction, the more habitual / allied you are the bar keep / faction NPCs will recognise you and negate such introductions.

If you don’t align with the bar keep, nefarious NPCs will not talk to you, but may redirect you to the barkeep / tell you how to get aligned.

Not every bar has this function, limit such activities to areas where criminality or deprivation is more apparent.

Greetings Commanders!

Apologies for bringing you your Discovery Scanner a day later than usual this week, but here we are! Let's talk about all things Elite Dangerous.

Fleet Carrier Interiors & Update 11 Feedback

First up this week, I want to talk about Fleet Carriers, specifically, your feedback to the launch of interiors, and Update 11 as a whole. We're very happy to see that the vast majority of Commanders are enjoying the update, and of course the jump sequence that I like to bring up every week because it's just THAT good. Your feedback, however, has been incredibly valuable as we look to improve the experience further moving forward. Of all the feedback, I believe the following are the most prevalent:

  • Bartender Service storage cap (already tweaked)
  • Bartender Service sell pricing cap
  • You would like to use menus whilst sitting
  • The panel next to the Commander's chair in the bridge should be interactive
The above has all been fed back to the dev team who will be taking these points into consideration. If there's a point here that you believe is worth raising that I've missed, please do leave feedback below! I'm interested in hearing your thoughts in detail on the Bartender Service sell pricing cap.

Class 3 Fragment Cannons

The team are currently investigating an issue where some Commanders are unable to deploy Class 3 Fragment Cannons. At the moment this seems to be a Horizons-only issue, but we're continuing to look into it. You can follow the Issue Tracker report for it here.

Community Event Calendar

Last week, we finally launched the Community Event Calendar! It's fantastic to see events start to populate the calendar as we get things moving. I'll be highlighting an event below, but I also wanted to comment on some of the feedback we're hearing and what we're looking at for a potential next phase.

  • Event length limit is too short - we are looking to raise this in the short term to two weeks, and long-term, allow a way to display longer events for those that want to see them, without cluttering the calendar for others.
  • Shareable links - At the moment, you can't share a direct link to an event once you open the pop-up. This is also on the list for the team to look into moving forward.

Last Chance For Type-9 Spring Paint Job Twitch Drops

Make sure you tune in to Frameshift Live this week on Thursday at 4PM BST (3PM UTC) for your last chance in the current run to earn the Spring paintjobs for the Type-9 via Twitch Drops! We've seen a huge amount of claims so far, but we don't want you to miss out on those lovely paintjobs for your ever-reliable hauler.

Community Event Calendar Spotlight: The Endurance Expedition

This week we're spotlighting the upcoming Endurance Expedition! The exploration event gets started on the 6th April in LHS 6309 10 am UTC, when the carriers will jump from LHS 6309 to Serenity Pru Euq WO-D b53–8. The expedition is open to all Commanders, but especially those looking to visit Colonia, Sagittarius A* and Beagle Point. The leading Commanders aren't requesting any Tritium but any donations would be appreciated! Got multiple ships? No problem! They can be stored on one of the participating Fleet Carriers!

That's all for this week folks,

Apologies if this has already been mentioned or is in wrong area of the forum lets just say I'm not firing on all thrusters at the moment, I would just like to ask if there could be an official post identifying what exactly will be done with ED on consoles (I don't mean transfers) presently I'm unsure as to what the future is with regards to storylines Cg's etc. I've seen a lot of suppositions as to what may happen but nothing official, initially it wasn't very clear as to how "cut off" ED on consoles would be whether storylines would still progress whether we would still be included in cg's what exactly critical updates meant with the only clarification upcoming being related to transfers. This in my opinion is what led to a lot of people leaving. Its nice to see this weekly update but from my point of view its isolating consoles further with no further information other than the potential to transfer even being discussed or on display. For myself and possibly others it would be appreciated if more detailed information could be put forward about what the future on consoles may entail if for nothing else to avoid the perception that now the decision has been made it no longer matters. Yeah so in my rather long winded way a little more clarity.

Cheers and o7

Bartender caps are relevent depending on Frontier's intention for the game. A full market could be established for materials with no cap. This would however promote farming of materials for profit. I'd argue that this is not the intention for the game as the farmer has to mass relog and the consumer does not experience the game loop.

Symptomatically though the market would just highlight which materials were rare and hard to obtain. The correct response to this is to look at that market and then adjust the availability of those materials at source. Either by telling them player base where to find them or by increasing their drop rate. Market makers and farmers therefore run the risk that materials suddenly become more common and prices drop.

Unlimited/high price caps are therefore a good thing IF followed up by proper game balancing to ensure that too rare materials don't stay rare.

The pricing system should also not be abusable to enable passing of credits between players as is already the case with normal fleet carrier markets.

why dont we just have a feature to allow us to give credits to other players? people do it anyway and having a proper function would make it less tedious.

I'm not sure and I haven't seen it reported here, but I think I've seen the fleet carrier paint jobs change while being on a jumping carrier. Don't know if this a bug, or maybe the carrier owner changed the skin and it occurs together with instancing.

Also please add NPC spawning when on foot on the carrier, so that one can admire the traffic while on the bridge / in the bar.

How about giving us an exploration mini game while waiting for the carrier jump? Something like firing off FTL probes to map the destination system. Like this we'd have something useful to do while waiting for the jump, and fleet carriers might even become "explorriers". Maybe send an initial FTL probe to get the system layout, and then separate probes to DSS the different bodies in the system. In fact maybe allow us to probe neighboring systems looking for stuff even if not waiting for a jump.

This would be anchored in lore, as apparently that's how humanity found target systems for the generation ships.

Hi - as a further, oft repeated, request - would be very cool if our own carrier crew recognised us when approaching for landing, rather than the usual generic approach voice messages. Also - if those two crew seated in front of the command deck had a different animation for the jump sequence itself, at present, it's as if they don't even know there's a jump happening! There must be something they need to do!
Be kinda nice if they stood to attention when you entered the bridge then sat down again when you took your seat or left the bridge

Mostly I like the update, even though the only real use I have as a solo explorer type is the Vista Genomics service. That's been a great addition, thank you.

Stuff that bothers me:
  • Crew has no idea who I am, they don't acknowledge me in any way.
  • ATC also regards me as a random commander.
  • I get a "No Gravity" warning when I disembark onto my carrier, even though there clearly IS gravity what with all the people standing around in the halls or sleeping on the couch with their heads lolled over. And the drinks in the bar. And...etc.
On the other hand, I don't care much about having the panel by the captain's chair interactive. Sure, it'd be nice for immersion, but I'd never wind up using it. I have very little reason to sit there during jumps anyway.

Hi Zac,
  • Bartender Service sell pricing cap
I would like to become a Material Trader. If that is a career type that you guys would like to support, I'll need to be able to set higher prices for materials that I sell. I'll need to cover the upkeep of the Fleet Carrier, pay for incidental expenses (those E Breaches do come in handy), and perhaps put something away for a rainy day with a bottle or two of snake gin. A cap of 10million credits would be more than acceptable. Perhaps you would join me on an all expenses paid trip to the famed Ishikawa's Prize in Iah Bulu where we could discuss in detail.

Yes, where are they? They'd fit nicely on the spare seats in our ships in EDH too.

People asked on stream, but they forget those existed. So they thought the people asked for FC NPC.

If a CM read this, we speak of the dude that goes inside the SLF.

Also, remove the 50% combat rank penalty associated with them, thanks :D

I can't see selling drinks as a function as it has absolutely no function from a gameplay point of view. I really don't want Elite to go in the direction of SC with an inflation of pointless fluff. Please don't.

Tend to agree quite honestly. I've got oxygenic bacteria (smoothies) and an RDX / epheneprine (explosive adrenaline) cocktail for sale behind the bar and, if there was a more obvious material to sell to support that roleplay, I wouldn't mind that. But I can't see drinking a drink as a dev task any more important to implement than reading a book, ear wax eating or click-to-win arm wrestling really.

Would like to see SRV tyre tracks return soon.

If there's a point here that you believe is worth raising that I've missed, please do leave feedback below! Demand for Odyssey engineering materials is very high. One way to incentivize meeting this demand is to allow higher prices. I should know. I am not really interested in on-foot gameplay, though I do CZs during CGs; and I'm frustrated there's no efficient way of gathering materials (I'd rather relog for 6 hours than spend 6 weeks doing missions). And now that I can engineer suits & weapons mostly without having to actually play on foot, I quite happily spent the time since Update 11 chasing FC sell orders, and attempting to entice people to fill my buy orders. But let me tell you, actually catching the sell orders requires camping the various places players post them (all of which are lacking), and having the privilege of being able to chase them at most hours of the day; and I attracted approximately two sellers to my FC. Allowing prices high enough to make it worth the time to farm/travel/sell would improve the market dramatically.

Also: You(FDev) could much better enable third-party tools in this area by putting the bartender demand+supply in the player journal on commander dock (and/or in the market cAPI pull), not just in the Fleet Carrier cAPI.

PS, please enable player trading of Horizons engineering materials too
I assume this a patch 11 thing - I did my first Settlement combat for a while last night, as luck would have it, it was an atmosphered world and the sun was shining brightly. Gorgeous. The only problem was none of the AI would move they just remanined stationary, although they did fire at me. Is it just me or is this happening widely?
Not just you
