Unpopular Animal You Really Want

Inspired by @NZFanatic's Unpopular Pack You'd Buy thread, what's an animal that you absolutely love and want in the game but it likely would be looked down on.

I personally have 3:

  • Red fox - personally, I like the gray fox better, but I feel like the red is more likely. The issue, though, is that many don't want another canine, let alone another fox, but personally, I'd welcome the rusty red dog with its innumerable color variations (especially the silver fox mutation)
  • Coquerel's sifaka - while very, very different than the 3 "true" lemurs we have in-game, and moving completely different, I'm sure many players will say "NO" to a 4th lemurs. Also my favorite primate
  • Greater rhea - Maybe controversial, but I do like rheas, 1 because it'll flesh out SA, 2 because my paternal family is from Argentina. Unfortunately, the fiasco we had with the cassowary (which I love the animal, by the way), if we got this, especially before the emu (if we get an emu), then this animal will probably be hated

So cool you have argentinian roots. I'm argentinian :)

I agree about the rhea, i really want them as well. Another clone i would really like is the brazilian tapir but i can see people complaining about it.

Maybe not as controversial but doesn't have much support but i would love an ocelot. Is my favorite of the small cats (followed by the caracal).

And also i really want a greater kudu although people seem to dislike antelopes here (specially african ones). The blackbuck is another one i love, but that one has a lot more support i think.

Same goes with the nile croc. basically another clone and yet another crocodilian but i really want it.

And then i don't really care about a lot of the most popular choices. For instance i can live without the tasmanian devil, porcupine or wolverine. I'd rather prefer other options over those.

I want every species of bear. Between my two regularly-visited zoos, they have 5 of the 8 bear species. No Asian Black Bear, no Brown Bear (of any subspecies), and no Polar Bear, but several American Black Bears (#43), a few Giant Pandas, a Sun Bear, a duo of Sloth Bears (#64), and at least three Andean Bears (#32). I want all of the species for completeness, and I think that at the very least the sloth bear should be included, since it's so unique. Also, I like the White-Nosed Coati (#93) more than the South American, because it represents North and Central America, including the Sonoran Desert -- some of my favorite regions of the world. Also the Ringtail (#216), Roseate Spoonbill (#104), and American Flamingo (#169). Finally, while it's not UNpopular, I believe that the Golden Lion Tamarin (#28) is my most wanted primate, barely beating the gibbon and easily coming out above the rest.

I feel like most people would t be too jazzed about another tiger, but I’d love to have the Sumatran tiger. Or Malaysian, either one of which should’ve been in the base game over Bengal.

Also if we’re going by meta wishlist votes, I don’t think any of the critters listed could be considered unpopular. Heck the red fox just made it to the top 20

I have a few options:
  • Javan Rhino - I know very unlikely due to not in captivity and its so similar to the Indian Rhino, but it is my favorite Rhino species
  • Black Caiman - Yeah we have plenty of crocs, but when they teased a crocodilian and I thought it was a South American pack, I got so excited it might be the Black Caiman, but no. Black Caiman is my favorite croc species.
  • Green Anaconda as a habitat animal

I would go for 3 animals
-Pyrennean chamois : I think it would be unpopular for being another European goat but has actually interesting fur (more than the normal chamois (110 in the list.
-Marsican brown bear : unpopular because another brown bear, but this italian bear would be cool as it is pretty vegetarian ^^
-Western Capercaillie : I don't know if this one would be that unpopular as it is a pretty new animal but I am pretty sure it is not a main request (183 in the meta wishlist)

(And these 3 animals would go along side the Alpine marmot and either the ocellated lezard or the vipera ammodytes as exhibit in a very unlikely and controversial European mountain pack)

Hoo boy.
  • Sumatran tiger is the biggest one. I'd even be happy with it in a paid DLC, naysayers be damned.
  • I wouldn't sniff at the Eurasian brown bear. Since I build almost exclusively in Europe this bear would be a nice addition.
  • Sumatran rhinoceros. A few more supporters now than it used to have, but back when I was first keen on it the idea got a lot of negative opinions.
  • Mute swan. Pretty garden-variety bird, most Europeans would see them as being pretty much the most boring animal in the world, but I'd love to fill my zoo's lakes with them.
  • Japanese badger. Conceptually very similar to the European badger but I just want more Japanese animals in general. I love Japan.
  • Eurasian wolf, a proper one. "Not another wolf!" you cry, but yes, I would take this one. At the moment the timber wolf serves the same purpose as a one-size-fits-all Canis lupus but I'd still like a specific Eurasian wolf (C. l. lupus).
  • Mallard duck. Yes, seriously, the most common duck in the world, in just about every country in the world. Again, just something we could pretend was wild to fill our lakes with.
And some that are probaby slightly less unpopular:
  • Gentoo penguin, to mix with the king penguin.
  • Any number of antelope (addax, scimitar-horned oryx, blackbuck, dama/mhorr/addra gazelle, common waterbuck, sitatunga, etc., etc.).
And of course, all the exhibit animals:
  • Tuatara number one.
  • Japanese fire-bellied newt.
  • Chinese giant salamander.
  • Emerald tree boa.
  • Social huntsman spider.
  • Inland bearded dragon.
  • Leopard gecko.
  • Madgascar day gecko.
  • Madagascar hissing cockroach.
  • Hercules beetle.
  • Axolotl.
  • Tokay gecko.
  • Giant African millipede.
  • Goliath stick insect.
  • Golden bell frog.
  • Blue poison dart frog.
  • Yellow-banded poison dart frog.
  • Phantasmal poison dart frog.
  • Shingleback lizard.
  • Indian cobra.
  • Emperor scorpion.
  • King baboon spider.
  • Plus several others...

American Flamingo. Yes, I know a simple reskin...but...the colours are just superior next to the Greater flamingo. I often build in tropical areas, where more colourful birds just fit better.
Bald Uakari - very unique primate that I would love to see, but...relatively rare, so many would probably oppose it.
Saki Monkey
Tiger Quoll
- not very popular, because they re rare outside of Australia zoos.
Bat-Eared Fox - another fox...yeah.

I have chosen species from my wishlist with low vote counts (fewer than ten votes), along with a couple I missed from my wishlist:

Golden bellied mangabey - Mangabeys are particularly prominent in mixed enclosures with gorillas; I have seen or heard of mixes of at least four mangabey species with gorillas. Although this is possibly the most rarely-kept of them and has only a single vote in the meta wishlist, it has a unique rich brown and golden colour pattern shared by no other primate in the game (most of the other mangabeys are mainly a combination of black, white and grey), is an Endangered species and is a playful species, as this video from Burgers Zoo shows:
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmwQiiBf8Qs

Any number of ground birds - Only a handful of species (emu, secretary bird, crowned crane, shoebill, kiwi and great white pelican) have more than 50 votes and some of my most-wanted species, like the bar headed goose, ocellated turkey and crested wood partridge have fewer than 5 votes; I feel they would all add something special to the game and fit in with all kinds of different enclosures.

Giant Asian pond turtle - A sizeable species of Critically Endangered freshwater turtle, one of the animal groups which zoos particularly in Europe are really working to keep and breed; I have chosen this species partly because they have more temperate requirements and are often kept in large outdoor enclosures and partly because my local zoo (Colchester) keeps them and they are amazing to watch.

More rodents - While the porcupine is a much-wanted species, there are a whole suite of rodents I would like to see, with my two top choices being the Eurasian red squirrel (a cute species often kept in large walkthrough enclosures here in the UK) and the South African springhare (a relatively large hopping rodent often mixed with aardvarks). Neither have particularly high vote counts on the wishlist.

I originally didn't think much of the idea of making coconut crabs a habitat animal, but then I saw this picture of them in an aviary at Beauval Zoo in France (shared with Aldabra giant tortoises, Rodrigues fruit bats and various birds) and am now converted - I would love to have them in with the giant tortoises and see them clambering around:
To give some impression of the size and height of the aviary, you can just above see the crabs in this picture, just up from the centre of the picture:

I wouldn't mind a third tiger (Sumatran makes the most sense, but I have seen a Malayan tiger before and they are stunning animals too) and a third brown bear (Syrian is probably my preference, as they look so different to any other brown bear subspecies and are present in European zoos).

Finally a lot of zoos here in the UK, if they are adding a rhino, are choosing black rhinos - Twycross Zoo replaced their elephants with them, at least three other zoos have brought them in recently and the new Bristol Zoo will also have them when they reopen in 2024. I would rather have the species as a whole rather than a specific subspecies, in order to get the broadest range of biomes for this more adaptable species (desert, grassland and tropical would all be suitable for them).

Even though I'm perfectly satisfied with the ASCO, I still wouldn't say no to the North American river otter. Same for the bobcat, coyote, and white-tailed deer, because I feel like local wildlife zoos will never feel truly complete without those species.

I really would like another mongoose now that the priority one is out of the way. Banded is fine (it's the one I've seen in real life) but I prefer the looks of the yellow or Egyptian species.

Civets and genets both feel super under-discussed for how unique they'd be. They look nothing like their cousin the binturong, and they'd behave very differently as well (especially if the binturong were actually half as lazily arboreal as it should be). The common genet would be my preference, but I'd be happy with the African civet, or any species of either really.

The Brazilian porcupine stands out to me as one of the most desirable South American species, and I feel like it doesn't get remotely enough appreciation. I still want the crested porcupine as well, but these two are absolutely distinct enough to justify the double dip.

On the subject of rodents: Prevost's squirrel. Super eye catching, super fun, super distinct from anything else on the roster. I was shocked just now to see that they had only a single vote on the meta wishlist (and it wasn't from me, so I'm "guilty" here too).

Fishing cat, sand cat, ocelot, serval. I don't think any of these (particularly the ocelot and serval) are truly that unpopular, but I do feel like the importance of really small cats can be understated. Sorry, but I can't back down from wanting to cram every carnivore I can into the game. Similarly, none of these are really unpopular individually, but I really do want to see all three of the remaining bears: American black bear, sloth bear, and spectacled bear. Each additional one we might get will just make the others' omissions hurt even more.

Everyone rightfully hones in on the American flamingo, but I'd honestly be thrilled if we ended up with three flamingos if DLC goes on for long enough. Either the lesser or Chilean flamingo would be a total cherry on top as far as diversity options go.

Oh, and I guess I'm on team coconut crab as well. I love crustaceans in general, so I'd particularly love to see how Frontier would pull that one off.

EDIT: Knew I’d immediately think of a few more.

Crowned lemur. I’d even prefer it to the much more unique sifaka or aye-aye. I just can’t get enough of the similarly-built lemurs. I’d be totally on board with the blue eyed black lemur, too.

Bontebok. I think people who are into more antelope are generally on the same page with what they want to see, but I feel like this one’s a really underrated choice. Super distinct looking (although maybe slightly less so with the lechwe on deck), and a great conservation story. The waterbuck is another one I’d like to see that isn’t at the top of most people’s lists. And while I think this one has gained a bit more traction recently, the blue wildebeest feels like a genuinely bizarre omission and I’m at the point where I’d actively welcome it appearing in a DLC pack.

I had a look at the meta wish list as the best measure of popularity I could think of and most of my list are relatively low down. It's hard to say what I really want because it depends on the zoo I am working on. But going with my current project, and thinking about others (a Japanese city zoo) I would say Japanese serow and sika deer. In general Eurasian ungulates would be great but I'm not sure how desperate the community is for them.

Two animals I would really like and others have mentioned might be unpopular due to their similarity to base game animals. They are the European brown bear and Sumatran tiger. I would like them for two reasons. They are both common in captivity and both have potential to be better made than the grizzly/Himalayan brown bears and the Bengal tiger.

More Argentinian blood here! My mother's family are from there though her brother's the only one of four siblings still living there, in Patagonia.

Going from my contribution to the meta list, my "unpopular" pick would be a jackal or wild turkey!
