Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The thing that gets to me is this:
Phase 1. Joining the game. This will usually happen with free fly events. You decide to test the game for free. I did this 3 years ago. Then I saw those detailed, monster ships and planets that no other game has. The scale is amazing. The detail is amazing. Very promising.
Is that the secret of Star Citizen’s success? People who haven’t played games in 30 years?

During my first Freefly, I wasn’t awed by what I saw. I’d seen similar sights in other games, including online games, before. Granted, I was already a skeptic, and a dirty refundian, going in, but in every game I’ve ever played, my first impulse is always to learn the basic gameplay, and get sufficient equipment to move on to the more advanced gameplay.

It’s only after I’m comfortable with the gameplay do I take the time to appreciate less important things, like the sight of a sandstorm in the distance, or sulfuric dust falls.

That would go before Freespace 2 so probably yeah.

I think it's a complete experience in my case - I do take time to contemplate the graphics if the game really shines in that department (like Death Stranding, HZD, CP2077, etc.). The atmospheric scattering effects in SC are done well enough so they can impress people who never played a modded KSP for example. Also the scale of ships is immediately apparent (something that's difficult to achieve outside of VR) - and that's also a factor of awe at first. Of course this impression tends to crumble as things start moving with the cartoonish physics, but on static screenshots there's definitely a thing.

And I thank you for reminding me that six years from now, Freespace will be a 30 years old game, and now I can already feel my bones crumbling into ashes inside the rotting flesh of my decaying earthly remnants.

Also thank you for reminding me that we are almost as forward in time from the announcement of Star Citizen, as that was forward in time from the release of Freespace 2.

Given the context, it is so funny that a pretty good, fan-made Wing Commander campaign is available as a mod for FS2.

Think my favourite so far was the inventory savaging which ended with:

Once my jumping backpack killed me, after I finished with my enemies and looting them.

In other unsurprising news, the Starfarer is not currently very useful...

Usefulness of refueling is limited because:

-players don't like having to interact with other players
-possible language barrier too, since we don't have beacons
-Stanton is too small and civilized to need starfarers. Except for a few long mining sessions.
-Starfarer does not store enough fuel. I cannot stress this enough,
A single fuel pod on the starfarer should top up a large size ship. A whole starfarer should top up in the very least 1 corvette sized ship. Or top up fully a single 890 jump.

What do you mean? The refuel ship actually doesn't refuel?

You can tell all isn't rosy in the CIG garden.

Ebob and LittleAnt haven't posted in 4 pages/a few days.....last time that happened was when CIG told backers permaalpha was their fault.

Make of that what you will.

That feedback thread is for 3.16 and has been running since December

Overall, the PTU feedback threads have had barely any contributions with how poor the 3.17 builds are

There aren't many PTU feedback threads because Ci¬G didn't initially want any, they stated that in the release notes... 3.17 PTU also hasn't been stable enough (so far) to gather any realistic feedback anyway.

From what I can see when I've attempted to log in, none of the servers have been very well populated considering 3.17 is supposed to be a point release patch testing refuelling and other toys. The most I've encountered on one server was 20...Pretty poor showing all round.

I'd make a rough guess that folks are just plain fed up fighting the same old perennial game killing bugs to bug test the new and shiny game killing varieties if I had to put my finger on it
