Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club presents: The Wiccan BeWare Race (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 3)

Well day 4 was busy with quite a few new or improved entries and quite a few changes to the leader boards.

In Regulation

In the top spot we have Captain-MD come in with a frankly superb run to push Sgurr from pole position That is a small gap and I am sure we will hear more from those two.

It is worthy of note that Alec turner has been relegated to 3rd which I am sure will also trigger some sort of response.

There are several new entries and the 20 to 22 minute section is starting to get quite competitive with several commanders improving their times by quite a bit.

In Open Unlimited

The open class has been completely shaken up and it is looking like the big boys are up for a fight again.

We have our Bruski turn up and blast in a cracker of a time to take first place. Right behind him we have Captain-MD following really closely to take second place, both now pushing Alec Turner down to 3rd place. That is going to get heated I am sure. I may have to increase security at the bar.

Further down we have dean36963 put in an excellent run to take the 4th place position.

Just below that we have Inodoro Pereyra enter the mix with an excellent entry to fill 6th position. The tunnel speed was awesome as well.

Further down the field we have jspace in a Type 6 making steady improvements and a deserving round of applause for a smooth bonus. Well done

There are enough entries now that the top nine positions are open for the extra Magic 8 Ball Championship points in both categories

Keep it up folks.

After some optimisation of my route, as it was obvious from my Unlimited time that I needed to shorten it, I've managed a few Regulation runs today, the best of which should see me hopefully in the top five for now... One question though, my best run finishes with 100% hull, and a slight ding to my ship on my final landing which is also asking for repairs, so does this still count for the 'Smooth' bonus?

Asking for repairs but still showing 100%? Interesting. Perhaps it's internal module damage that it wants to repair. Anyway, if it shows 100% hull I think that's good enough.

Yep, never had that before. Still showed 100% hull, but the COVAS also said I'd damaged the ship when I landed (which prompted a long string of colourful expletives from me) and the spanner icon appeared in the HUD. Must have just been ship integrity. It only cost 10 credits to fix too. I think a picture may have fallen off the wall in my quarters or something... ;)
I'll submit the run later anyway and it'll be available to judge by everyone.

Funnily enough when Arf and Bruce were practicing the race on the livestream there was a bit where they were checking for 100% before launch (they even said and verbally confirmed it out loud) and I could clearly see the repair icon (but not easily make out the hull % figure). Perhaps they had the same thing (or ... quite possibly ... they were being their usual selves and simply did NOT have 100% hull).

I managed to get a couple of runs in earlier today, and I actually remembered to go through the tunnel this time 😂

I deleted the video I took of my failed run yesterday so I wouldn't know how fast I almost did it as it felt like a good run. I did quite a good run, but on my second I managed to beat it a bit which was nice. The SuperCruise approaches were a bit better, though I think there's still room for improvement.

Run submitted, and it turns out it went well :)

Race Details

The Buckyball Racing Club welcomes you to race 3 of the Magic 8 Ball Championships.

The Wiccan BeWare Race 3308

This race was originally a part of the early days of Elite all those years ago. It was rehashed as a new race in 3305 but still called the Wiccan Ware Race. For the Magic 8 Ball Championships 3308 it`s back but now it`s just a bit tougher, therefore “Beware”!

Starting at Dublin Citadel, Gateway you will have to deliver medicines or consumer technology to Soholia then return to Dublin with a full cargo hold. Then you will be testing your nerve and skills at the local tunnel before collecting domestic appliances for Vasiley Vision.

The race is a test of skill and nerve without much in the way of ship protection or automation. As a cargo runner you should be fast without care for traffic or the life of your vehicle. You do not have time for fuel stops or fancy jump techniques. Shields just make you soft. The cargo comes first.

CMDR Sulu

Ship Classes

Regulation.

The Official Magic 8 ball Cobra. You must power down the fuel scoop and shield generator. If they are powered up at any time during the race then that run will be void.

Here is a link to that build. https://s.orbis.zone/i95a

Open Unlimited

Any size or weight ship you care to run. There are however some rules. NO fuel scoop or shield generator may be fitted. If you need more fuel then fit a bigger tank. Guardian modules are allowed. A maximum cargo space of 8t only will be allowed.

It is unlikely that large class ships will fit in the tunnel but you are welcome to try!

The use of fleet carriers is not allowed in this race.

Route Details

Start at Dublin Citadel, Gateway

Find and buy 8t of Advanced Medicines or Consumer Technology from any location you wish.

Fly to Soholia and sell Advanced Medicines or Consumer Technology at any local commodity market.

As cargo runners never run an empty leg, fill your hold with anything available but it must sell for a profit at Dublin and only be of one type of commodity.

Return to Dublin Citadel and sell your cargo (for a profit or the race is void). Making a loss is just rude! (Break even is ok however)

Fly to the Gateway Interchange Hub (in the Gateway system)

Fly through the tunnel. At the centre divider your speed must not be below 200 m/s (regulation) or 300 m/s (unlimited), failing in this will result in a penalty. You may attempt this only once per race, no retry!

Find and buy 1t of Domestic Appliances from any location except Gateway. (i.e. It must be another star system)

Fly to Vasilyev Vision (LP 131-66) system and sell your cargo.

Time is stopped when you sell your cargo.

Do it fast and try not to kill your ship. Destruction at any time voids the race.

Additional

NO ship in any class
will be allowed to refuel or repair at any time (including limpets). If you need more fuel then buy a bigger tank (Unlimited).

Regulation will just have to manage!

The Buckyball team do not allow wimpy add-ons for your ships. The add-ons of course include SC Assists and Auto Docking. It is your ship and you are the pilot so fly it!

For those using Odyssey you are NOT permitted to use settlements

This is not a safe race and slow flying will not be tolerated. You must not hit the centre of the tunnel below 200 m/s (Regulation) or 300 m/s (unlimited), failing in this will result in a time penalty

If you are destroyed or lose any cargo then that run is void.

NO synthesis or FSD Supercharging of any kind will be permitted. That is just voodoo and will not be seen in such a prestigious race.

This race is suitable for Odyssey or Horizons and any skill level.

Bonuses

Smooth Flyer

If you finish with 100% hull then you will get 60 seconds off your time. Plus, a serious round of applause for such show offs.

Rough Flyer

If you finish with 20% or less hull you will get 30 seconds off your time and a mild nod of approval.

Bully

If you finish with 1% or below hull you will get 90 seconds off your time and a tin of deep scratch polish and a welding kit.

Coward

For every 1 m/s below 200m/s at the centre point of the tunnel you will lose 1 second from your race. This is not a safe race and slow flying will not be tolerated. For unlimited this increases to 300 m/s

For example, a centre point speed of 156 m/s in regulation will mean 44 seconds will be added to your time. You have been warned!

Evidence

A video or image link of the run. (Imgur and YouTube are good examples)

There will likely be 12 or 13 images. Images must show -

  • Your ship modules both unlimited & Regulation (2 pics likely)
  • Your cargo screen.
  • Launching with time & fuel showing
  • Buying your first cargo
  • Selling your cargo at Soholia
  • Buying your return cargo at Soholia
  • Launching with time & fuel showing
  • Selling goods at Gateway
  • Midway through the tunnel making sure your speed is visible
  • Launching from your pick-up location with 1t Domestic Appliances
  • Selling at Vasilyev Vision showing time, fuel & cargo hold. (The time will be taken from the clicking of “sell goods”)
  • A picture of your ship status (hull, fuel etc)
Here is a picture of where the finishing time will be taken from - Source: https://imgur.com/a/JNfIUIj

CLICK HERE TO SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY

Entries will be accepted from 00:00:00 on 16th April until 23:59:59 on 24th April.
(This is race dates, the entry form will stay open a little longer for last minute entries)

Recap

NO Refuels

NO Repairs

NO Shields

NO SC Assisting

NO Advanced docking computer

NO Fuel scooping

NO Synthesis

NO FSD boosting

NO Fleet carriers

For those using Odyssey you are NOT permitted to use settlements

This race about the pilot and their ship and actually flying it! While it is entirely possible to run this race almost effortlessly with all the technology fitted, this is about flying without safety nets. That makes it much more fun, and much more of a challenge. You can go with the careful approach for the bonus, or go for broke and see what happens. Either method will be rewarded.

This race is a light hearted homage to The Wiccan Ware Race so please enjoy yourselves.

F.A.Q

  • What if I blow up during a race, can I rebuy and continue?
  • No, if you blow up you must restart
  • What if I do not make a profit on the return run, can I just buy something else and continue?
  • No. Making a loss is not a thing a trader can do and survive.
  • Can I power up the shields/scoop between landings?
  • No. While I cannot check this if you submit pictures, I will check it with videos. It is always a matter of trust with BuckyBall, and the only real loser will be yourself.
  • Can I make a second attempt at the tunnel to get the speed right.?
  • No. If you were running for your life, you would not ask for a rerun, nor will I. So, one shot only! After all it is not safe.
  • What if I accidently press refuel/repair in a station, will it still count?
  • No, at no point will fuel or repairs be allowed.
  • What if I wish to question the result, who decides?
  • I will be judge, jury & executioner in all cases. My decision is final, after fair discussion, alcohol & bribes that is!

Here’s my blog on the race https://edrushfleet.co.uk/2022/04/19/donk/. Hope you enjoy!

That`s great

The premise of the race is NOT going too slow and NOT losing money. Added to that none of that warm fuzzy protection we surround ourselves with. As an impoverished cargo hauler these are important. It is easy to give a bonus for how fast you are going or how much money you make. It is entirely different if it is reversed! Glad you have enjoyed it so far.

Anyway, last in a race that is like this is not an insult, it just means some of the loonies out there fly faster!!!

Overall I must say that the pace that people are achieving is better than I expected. I made a personal prediction of max speed when I was creating this, both have been comfortably beaten. I am impressed with all of them.

You are all mad you know that don`t you!

Waaaiiitt a coton-pickin' minute. Someone (ok, it was Shaye...) pushed an Anaconda through the tunnel at >300 m/s?

I sure hope we get to see the proof after the race is done.
You can have it now, I think I've wrung as much as I am able to out of it for now. Servers were not cooperating at all on drop outs and I did make some mistakes so there's still more time in it.
