Is ED nearing the end of its lifespan?

At least I'll have 2 commanders that I can send into the sunset when the moment inevitably arrives.

To be honest I'm looking forwards to start a new commander from scratch. The game stopped being dangerous somewhere before I became a billionaire and got all the ships and engineering that I wanted. I'm thinking to take my time this time around, slowly work my way up to G3 engineered ships and no relogski. If for nothing else to prove my assertion that there is no need to grind unless you are in a hurry.

OK, I know that open is more dangerous, but somehow I'm really not sure about risking my ship and cargo just to have the thrill that someone might want to murder me and that my only challenge is to see if I can highwake as the ship certainly can't fight back. I've also found the thargoids challenging and dangerous, still the thought of starting that new commander is exciting.

While the idea of having progression again is kinda appealing, everytime I think about engineering grind again, I start to be physically ill.

It's not a fun grind. And no, spending 5m slowly crawling around with limpets for near nothing valuable after a fight is hardly "fun" either. And yes it's very much a grind to.

It's closer to the end than beginning but that is just how things go. It's had a good run even if it were to fall out of active developement in the next year or two. I suspect it will truck along at least several more years after that. It's p2p, while fdevs does have some server costs, its not nearly at the same cost level as a fully hosted game like WOW. Keep playing, keep buying arx, keep luring new players in. And it will be around for a while yet.

We'll see how I like it. Since I liked the game the first time around, I suppose I'll like it this time too. I can also mix up the on foot with the in ship stuff. And finally I'm gonna need a FC captain as I don't always want to be onboard directing and refueling it.

For me progression is about experiencing things for the first time. So for example, in Skyrim, every time I started a new character, I took a radically different path than the previous play through. Was I last an archer? This time I'll be a swordsman. Did I last side with the Empire? This time I'll side with the Stormcloaks.

In Elite, there is no "new experience" I can get by starting over from scratch, not without wiping my memory, so I don't really see the point. It's really too bad the game didn't force paths on you - once you choose to serve the Federation military, you're committed to the Federation, for example. That would give separate saves and / or fresh starts more meaning IMO.

And like you, I hate the engineering grind (especially the unlocks), and I never want to have to do that again. Twice was more than enough!

The next best thing for the health and future of the game, right behind the decision to drop consoles and VR, would be to shut down all multiplayer features and focus instead on true single-player content. As if games these days could only survive as multiplayer. Many new games of late are going in exactly the opposite direction and are extraordinarily successful at it. The multiplayer functionality in ED has always struck me as a half-hearted and cheap excuse to avoid real content anyway.
That may or may not be true - I'm torn, as IMO the game gets a great deal of beneficial content from its community, but the actual "multiplayer features" have always been rather half-baked. However, I think if anything it's likely things will go in the opposite direction than you suggest. With the pullback from consoles and the coming client codebase merge, ED is for the first time since ~2015 going to be in a place where all players (on supported platforms) can (in principle) instance together again. If anything that suggests to me that FDev are likely to try and build up multiplayer activities. If for no other reason that, in terms of development resources, that kind of thing is very cheap compared to creating significant new features or asset-heavy content, and quite high ROI if you get additional community engagement out of it.

Not a doom thread by any means, more like a serious question.

Many Bugs, some that have existed for Years, some even Game breaking, are not adressed, do not get fixed or get failed fix attempts never to be mentioned again, cost to much ressources to fix.

Console is canceled, many, MANY cosmetics are still broken after a year. Lighting is still broken. Heck not even the normal combat Music in space works correctly after almost a year.
No new Ships, no playable (or rather somewhat playable) Story like with the Guardians or the Goids. The Performance is still down the toilet.

Is Frontier not willing to put enough money into Elite to get it into a good state anymore? Is the Code just to broken to be fixed?
What are your genuine opinions on this matter?

Have a good day :)
Hey Einar,
Loved this game and the almost Serious game and Arcade quality game mixed together was a real benefit. Difficult game to get going in but my god once you got going and got better ships etc. then phenomenal, although a bit grindy in places.

Owner -Devs, give These lads and lassies a phone and have an honest non-monetary conversation as to how to save your product. You'll be back to making a bit of cash again sooner rather than later, if that's your preponderance.

I hope this doesn't get redacted as I am showing an example of a team who are not predominantly fixated on income or share holders or eejits who have gotten somewhere they shouldn't be and then make decisions, but want to produce a playable, enjoyable, a wee bit shallow at times but trying hard to fix things.. Game..
Take this as an example of an update, no faff? no fluff? -
  • Fixed a number of issues that prevented pirates from attacking planetary buildings with the correct behaviours.
  • Fixed a general issue that caused pirates to attack planetary buildings too frequently.
  • Pirates will no longer attack players who are underground, underwater, or in their own base.
  • Pirates no longer attack planets in low conflict systems.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the pirate raid warning message to display when there was no pirate attack incoming.
  • Fixed an issue that caused pirates to deal too much damage when shooting at the player on the ground, and for the player to receive ship-related warning messages when hit.
  • Fixed an issue that caused pirate raid markers to fail to clear from buildings when the raid ends.
  • Fixed an issue that caused smuggling items to sell at an incorrect markup in regulated stations.
  • Reduced the effectiveness of the Positron Ejector against starship shields.
  • Hauler starships can now upgrade their cargo inventory to a greater capacity than other ships.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause items in the ship cargo inventory to be incorrectly cleaned up when sold.
  • Fixed an issue that caused repair kits to be too expensive when purchased with tainted metal.
  • Fixed a number of glitches and other visual issues with player capes.
  • Fixed an issue that caused squadron ship engines to be very loud while flying in formation.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the solar ship engine vents to constantly flap open and closed in the inventory menu.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the camera to be out of focus when repairing or installing ship technologies while onboard the ship.
  • Fixed a number of instances of missing audio effects.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the starship utility menu to open on the wrong option.
  • Improved the appearance of freighter fleet warp-ins.
  • Fixed a collision issue with the wings of Solar class starships.
  • Trader ships now use the red hostile target arrow on the starship HUD if they are attacking the player.
  • Fixed a crash related to pirate spawning.
  • Fixed a crash related to the player frigate fleet.
  • Fixed a texture streaming memory leak.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause screen flashes in space at low framerates
This is almost all the current issues addressed, but there will still be some.
Clever wording for some larger issues but dealt with just the same.

Please, Please, Please make Elite Viable again, it is and always will be a phenomenal platform. Maybe go back to basics and also be completely Open and Honest with your community.

A story line might be-
Your pilot has collided with a Thargoid scout during your last jump, please reboot to access- ship................ "remote access acquired"

Reboot.
Computer voice-
Your lower extremities have been damaged, flight only operation and therapy for you My lads and lassies for at least 8 months and also bed therapy (if you have one in your ship) for the proceeding 6 months after your bedrest.

The Thargoids have been secretly amassing their Armada and have surrounded us... this has limited all jumps greater than an 8 system area to be lethal unless in a close group with heavily modified equipment, Pease help us save humanity..kbzzzt..

Who knows what grind we'll find if/when we get through mankind's current Extinction level Thargoid incursion.

Just a thought.

Thargoids are ammonia based. Their marmoid would smell and taste, like pee. Literally. And it would be highly toxic.

Now, all hope isn't lost. The Icelandic cook a specific shark which has high concentration of ammonia in its body (to resist the cold). They ferment the flesh for days before cooking. Still taste like pee, but it's not toxic anymore.

It would be a good opportunity to introduce the "Cooking" rank. Starting at "mostly pasta" and going all the way to elite.
I love Obfuscation.

I think it’s fair to say that ED’s best days are behind it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t continue on for a few more years yet.

Really depends on what FDev do next, and where they’re focussing their efforts instead of fixing bugs and supporting consoles and VR.

Some kind of playable storyline would help I think, and by that I don’t mean being told the story through Galnet. I mean, actual player involvement…

In my opinion the important thing to remember is something you should never forget.
Very good point, almost An Obituary.

(Many Many people have had those moments and achievements) and are sad at their loss.
