Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Hard cold fact, 3.17 is one of the buggiest updates in recent times which puts your 'everything's better and betterer' narrative round the U bend where it belongs.
Never said 'everything', just the alpha in overall. It's true this one has more problems in quantity than the 2 previous one. It's true also that this one has solved 2 major problems of 3.16 (desynch and inventory lag). Added to the selling addition, the overall 3.17 is better than 3.16. But you need to play to understand it, not only look at bugs collection.

Citizencon was always a marketing event, as many here have rightfully been critical its a "This is how the game could be in the future" event.

If, IF things pan out as decried through the next 6 to 9 months we wont be needing that anymore, they have also said they don't want to pull people away from this push to do Citizencon, i agree with that, less talk, more do.

Well, in theory, they could always just have done the con as a meeting type event with socializing and keynote speakers from management (because management are useless and don't do much anyway :p).

Problem always was, from what we heard, CR always wanted his fake flashy demos so devs would get pulled off their actual tasks for months.

I would tend to agree wit your conclusion as it is pretty much universal anyways. The issue with CIG here is that track record suggest that with or without "talk" they always lack reasonable "do" anyways.

On its own, the lack of Con, does not really mean much. But taking it along the, for years, dwindling roadmaps, the just announced delays on 3.18 and the subsequent server meshing/Pyro, no news whatsoever on SQ42 progress still and the complete omission of ToW, among other gems in the letter, and a clearer picture should emerge. And which makes this LFTC solidly consistent with CIG´s poor delivery track record and constant misrepresentation to support sales for 10+ years.

Just reading the chairman's letter.

Wow, I wonder if CR has ever considered writing books. That's a monster text.

My main takeaway from the first part is CIG can't function with WFH and CR really wants bums on seat in the office, probably so he can wander around looking for rogue blue pixels.

Poor guys. Most software devs I know love WFH and say they are more productive, less money spent on petrol, less time spent on commute, and overall feel better for it.

The other takeaway, SC is not releasing any time in the coming years. Neither is SQ42. CR is perfectly happy with this.

It's yet another astounding quote choice 😁

The same fricking 'full persistence' speech as 2018. (And like, all the times he said it was coming in 2020, and 2021 ;))

It's just staggering.

So far this is like beat for beat the October 2020 Chairman's letter, down to the 'three key technologies'. (Previously: iCache, Quantum, Server Meshing. Now: New iCache, Gen12, and Server Meshing...)

Un....be...lievable 😁

Yeah, pretty much. Also we are here once more:
Regarding the relation between funding and the constant misrepresentations on content delivery and dates etc:
"Maybe there was a motive to keep on talking... Would this project have survived a decade if it did not always seem only 2 years away?... Dishonesty calls into question the consent that justified thousand dollar purchases... "

That means that you could drop a gun or a med pen in a forested area on Microtech and return several days later after logging out to find the gun or med pen still there

In most games I have played that would be considered more....well a challenge than a feature, like how many pens can we pile up in this forest before the server goes....squeaaaaaaaal and dies!

About 3.17, the difficulty in game has greatly increased.
NPC (ships and on foot) are more responsives and you encounter a lot more vandering ships. Some missions I was able to do everytime in Aurora are now deadly half the time. Same for on foot mission. Having a good ship and a good armor/gun is more important than in 3.16.
Since 3.17, I let my Aurora at the hangar even for small delivery missions and investigation missions.

When covid happened and they switched to working from home I distinctly remember them saying that apart from the initial setup it was having no impact on them at all.

Of course they did, because it suited the narrative at the time. Now they need a narrative to explain why development has been so slow, so now WFH is a bad thing. It doesn't matter, new backers don't know any of this and faithful backers have very selective memories.

Road to persistent trash simulator. Why would anyone keep the little items players drop?
Why would anyone prefer trash littering the ground impede the game's performance?
You focus on the trash players will drop, we focus on the player's derelicts we'll search, scan and salvage in the open.

You know that beeing able to give a persistent state to all items means also that CIG can choose what items will be short/mid/long term persistent ?

What a surprise! Magic tech happens to not be that helpful and the new magic tech that was meant to unlock the dream now needs another magic tech to happen.
Surprise, it's more than 1 year we know it. Another surprise, it's when a company can't change what's not working that the game die (I let you wonder which company I am talking about).

Surprise, it's more than 1 year we know it.

They’ve been stringing you along a lot longer than that…

Server Meshing planned for:

2018:
Roadmapped for delivery in Q4
2019: "That will be coming in next year" (Erin Roberts, Chief Development Office, June 2018)
2020: "Round about middle of this year" [In reduced 'first step' form of 'Full Universe Persistence' alone.]
2021: "Probably by the end of this year" [In reduced 'first step' form of the 'entity graph' (previously 'Full Universe Persistence', then 'iCache')]

At what point are you going to twig that there might be some serious issues with the plan? ;)

A lot longer…

Missed this bit, CR gives current staffing numbers

"Today we have 780 people on staff, plus an extended family of over 130 working closely with us at Turbulent in Montreal, with many more that will join us in the coming months."

900 people!

They keep growing, they keep raking in more and more money, they claim they keep getting new backers/players, and yet development gets slower and slower.

Quite the achievement.
