Community opinion (to reasonable PC CMDR & consoles CMDR)

That's a personal question for you. Do you enjoy playing it? If you do, why stop?

All live service games come to an end, this one is no different.
I can sort of understand where the OP is coming from. Not all parts of the game are undiluted, pure fun, so there's at least some amount of "effort" involved, time to invest in (say, travelling somewhere, unlocking something, etc. all takes a fair amount of time if not much else). Not to mention throwing more money at it in the form of Arx.

There comes a time when one (particularly those with a goal oriented approach to games) needs to ask oneself if it's worth allocating more time to a game that requires a fair bit of dedication although it depends on one's playstyle - of course if all you do is potter around in your Startwinder, by all means continue playing for as long as you enjoy that.

I'm on PC, and having played since the Alpha I can safely say I'm still underwhelmed, and at this stage already bored of the EDO content, and have gone back to Horizons (ship) activities, as I find them more fun (and flying ships is ultimately what I want from Elite, not walking around). Though since there's nothing new on the pipeline with regards to ship content, I'm at a similar cross roads at the moment - do I continue grinding credits towards a FC? For what exactly? Play the same Horizons content I've played for the past 7 years? Everything's become very stale.

If I was on consoles, I'd have given up on Elite already at this stage if I'm perfectly honest. I'm kind of holding out for FC interiors, but am merely lukewarm about it as it doesn't add that much to the game in the greater scheme of things.

Is it worth playing the game, not knowing if it will be ported to consoles? Thats an entirely subjective question, whats worth it to you may not be to someone else. I will give a subjective answer: For me its not worth playing on my PS4 account, I just find it too boring. I play EDO on my PC account all the time and I find it to be very entertaining.

Edit for spelling

I personally see it as a waste of time and energy continuing to hope for odyssey on console.

I explore on xbox and love it but I can't justify continuing my journey if they are just going to reset the planets I've discovered once they roll horizons into Odyssey and I won't be able to even play it. I've already lost out on first footfalls for planets I planned to revisit but if the rest of my discoveries will be lost too then I see no point.

These thoughts have also wandered through my head, but I always come back for more.
I regard the game as a structure I can build my own little RPG, trying to recreate my time with the Traveller RPG (which I believe Braben and Bell also enjoyed).
Will odyssey fundamentally change how I play? I won't know until I play but I'll wait until it does or doesn't release on Xbox. If it doesn't release then I hope horizons continues, and if that doesn't continue then I'll have to think about playing something else. Until then I will enjoy playing this flawed gem of a game.

when i first heard about Odyssey, i was not interested at all. i play Elite for the space flight and the ships.

then i took a tour of the INRA bases and other abandoned/destroyed settlements. it was great. there was an eeriness to those places that was almost as dark as some of the Generation Ships.

shortly after doing that Odyssey dropped on PC and i started watching videos here and there of Commanders running around. it's grown on me. actually, i'm really excited to step out of my ship and wander around space ports, planetary settlements and old, abandoned buildings.

i like the look of the Missions that have you restore power to a shut down settlement. i might even shoot a couple NPC's or Federal Commanders if the opportunity presents itself.

heck. i'm even looking forward doing some deep space exploration and getting first foot-fall on some tiny ball of ice spinning in a never before visited System.

but, if Odyssey never comes to Console (for the record, i think it will), i'll be just fine flying one of my ships through the starry expanse.

and when i get bored of that, i'll switch to a different ship.

You shouldn't expect Odyssey to revolutionise the gameplay. If you're already wondering if you want to keep playing Elite: Dangerous, it may be time to take a break.

Odyssey isn't a bad product but it just adds a few more missions on foot and a little variety to the combat. The base is still the same with procedural generation and even more restrictive engineering mechanics. The DLC does not add anything to the rest of the game as it is designed as a separate module. Odyssey is a plus (if you can get it to work) but it is not essential to enjoy the game.
We need some proper “full stack” content:

- Fight for Air Superiority over a given planet by taking out waves of defending ships; then land and deploy your SRV to approach a land base, sneak or fight your way inside on foot to steal an experimental craft which you have to fly to a rendezvous point avoiding interdictions along the way

- Hit a Capital ship, take out it’s weapons to allow your factions drop ships to approach and then board it for some zero-G combat in order to make your way to the bridge, set the self destruct and escape in one of its fighters or space-walk back to your waiting ship before the cap ship explodes and crashes into the nearby star

Etc … with full multi-crew Team / Wing support.

Would be epic.

I have a PC account purely to rescue clients. I do not enjoy playing Elite on PC as I do not have the PC or the set up to make the most of it. Elite has always been a console experience to me and that is how I still play the game on a regular basis. I am not going anywhere and I am rescuing new CMDRs on Xbox. The game isn't dead on console. It is still a big galaxy that we have barely touched.

We have fuel, you don't. Any Questions?

Not having space legs on console is a bit a drag, but I was only going to use them to walk round my ship and hang around in Bars. Poking round old abandoned planetary camps would have been nice. Never mind, to me Elite has always been about my ship and since Elite Frontier, when I could buy an Asp Explorer I have never looked back.

It is a little galling that an Xbox can handle an SRV but it can't handle legs.
It's not about the concept of legs but the engine/lightning overhaul, among other things. It's an last-gen console that reached EOL in February, nothing that odd about new stuff not running on it unfortunately.

Yeah as Ian Skippy said I think if it was just legs and they didn't upgrade the planetary tech it would have been fine, there are plenty of games on Xbox where they walk, but the new planetary tech and atmospheres was the step to far. Unfortunately the next gen Xbox and Playstation being held up probably contributed to the problem of trying to get the game to run on last gen consoles.

The problem wasn't the next-gen but the plan to develop it for last-gen at all. (Example: Cyberpunk 2077) Added to this is the premature release on the PC. Frontier literally broke its own neck.

That's essentially what I meant, if the the next gen consoles had achieved the penetration into the market that was expected it wouldn't have been a problem, by the time Odyssey was ready to come out the next gen consoles would have had a big market share, but because of delays they tried to get it to work on last gen, it was a bad time for anything to do with consoles really.

od is not the end of the world,ed was the main play ,players shouted for space legs as they call it and got it ,i play pc and have od but have no intrest in running around on foot combat, good fun for them that do,sry about consule players, lot of posts about that, but ed has a lot of things about it,think positive not negetive , my thoughts as ive been a fan of this since day one, 07
