VR advice please.

I don't think it's considered a bug. Supersampling to almost two times the pixel count is (in theory) wanted and needed by HP to compensate for the lens distortion and clarity on the edges and such. One can argue that it's way too much (I would, and I downscale manually), but I don't think it is considered a bug ;) . I remember reading about the G1 having the same panel resolution but a lower 100% render resolution, and I think the conclusion was that was a concession to the hardware at the time being not even remotely able to render a higher supersampling.... or something to that effect.

Yes be carefull with Amazon or ebay, you may end up with a v1 version
FYI, the issue with v1 (I have a v1) was the cable caused problems with AMD Ryzen motherboards. But HP offers a free cable updrade to v1 headset owners, I got a free cable.
There wasn't, as far a I know, a problem with v1 headsets an Intel systems.
I too have a V1 and that is true... however it doesnt stop there, the V2 has an improved face plate insert to waste less of the FOV (I modded mine to give the max FOV but this may not be needed on the V2)

but the kicker for me and this I cant get around with my V1 as it is a hardware improvement... the V2 has better cameras and the controller tracking area is increased by a claimed 30% (though people i trust have told me it is probably closer to 20%) but it IS noticably better for controller tracking in games where you aim down sights or use a bow.

Yep quite correct there are those improvements.

did you get to keep your old cable? i would have liked to have kept mine just incase i roll over my "good" cable or something, but i kept getting hounded to return, and i didnt have the confidence to lie and tell them i had already destroyed it so i gave it back, presumably for landfill.

My experience, playing Odyssey... I don't do any of the FPS stuff as that isn't my thing, but I do get out of my ship and walk around on planets from time to time. As others have said, you get great 3D headlook VR in your ship and SRV, on foot is a poor VR experience - well not a VR experience at all.

I was using a Reverb G2 (V1) for ED and MSFS. I have an i7 10700K, RTX 3080, 32GB and a 1TB SSD. I used Steam VR for playing ED and reduced resolution a bit in the steam VR settings for ED. My graphics settings in ED were a custom mix (I'll see if I can find a link to them) and performance was Ok. I don't constantly monitor FPS, but it felt smooth and text and the HUD were lovely and sharp. The downside was that I would get occasional very bad stutters, opening the galaxy map, sometimes arriving in a system after a hyperspace jump.

My G2 broke... So I got a Quest 2 which I run through the Oculus software and the link software - meaning I'm connected to the PC using the USB cable, which I find a bit flaky, it has dropped out a couple of times, but that's Oculus, not ED. I can run ED graphics at VR Ultra, it's smooth, no stutters at all, but it's not as clear as the Reverb was. Certainly clear enough for my eyesight, and I'm out exploring, haven't tried combat with it yet.

Would I go back to the G2 if I choose to get another one? It's a toss up for ED. I would for MSFS I think as the clarity is quite a bit better with the G2 on that, but for the lack of stutters in ED I might just stick with the Quest 2.

Odyssey in vr is amazing!
Sorry but it is!
Why am l apologising hehe?
I feel somehow guilty of having my cake...
But its that good.
I've never played elite in 2D.
G2 reverb v1 with modded cable and faceplate.
3070ti overclocked powers it all with only occasional stutters but I've grown used to it. Settles pretty much 5 mins after I've fired up the game.
I use a ethernet cable installed straight to the router for minimal lag.
Edhm (hud mod) kills the jaffa thing.
And I've configured the whole games binds on the hotas n mouse. Specifically on foot which cos l can't be arsed to switch to 2d l play in Periscope view (elite on foot vr default) resulting in seamlessness. Why take headset off? Sod that.
Luckily I'm left handed and the throttle acts primarily as on foot controls. Many hats make binds easy hehe.
Detent essential on the throttle too (x56).
I've learned over time to customise both a pc, and interfacing with elite.
It's a steep curve no doubt.
Odyssey is lovely in VR you won't regret installing it.
How you play is upto you.
Blaze your own trail as is the saying.
Don't forget limpets, kgbfoam, and above all don't fly without a rebuy.
Fuel scoops are handy too lol.
Once you got all that sussed playing in VR is literally unique in today's gaming world.
Yeah SC runs a 3rd party VR vorpx thing but it's crap apparently.
So till a game comes along that can compare in vr to elite... I won't be going anywhere soon.

Yes kept old cable, HP just sent me a new one and didn't ask for the old one

Man, I read you guys about getting "Average" experiences using a 3080ti or a 3090 with R9 5900x and I wonder If I should wait for the RTX 4000 series in September. What hurts me the more besides the waiting (and the chance that it will be as difficult to get like the 3000 series) its the rumored 400-600 watts usage and the current and future increases in power prices.

I have a Quest2 running on an older i7 7700k, 16gb ram, 1080 Ti and have my windows, oculus and elite software installed on an SSD.
I just set EDO to VR ultra and away I go - no problems whatsoever. And your system trumps mine so you should be a-ok.

Elite in VR is a different game. I mean, it’s the same of course, but it transforms it in to something truly magical. You’re no longer looking at a screen of a spaceship, you’re IN a spaceship. You will never ever go back. Indeed, you will wonder how anyone plays it without VR at all!

Same with the SRV.

Sure, the switch to flat cinema screen on foot is disappointing, but it’s not the end of the world. Will this become full VR at some point? Not a chance! But flying and driving is still supported and is absolutely amazing.

To summarise, ED in VR is the best, most immersive gaming experience I have ever had. Go for it.

Prices of RTX 30's is already coming down and availability is increasing to where they should be. If you want it now don't bother waiting, you'll only get scalped on the RTX40's anyway an probably won't be able to afford the higher versions, if you could get one, and you'll be playing the game now not sometime in the future. RTX 30's are a very good product and won't suddenly become a bad product just because of a newer RTX 40's. Then after the RTX 40's hype has calmed down you'll have a sellable RTX 30 to buy a more reasonably priced RTX 40.

Odyssey in VR is still something I avoid due to the numerous lighting and shadow issues (these are really offputting in VR). Horizons is still beautiful, though.

3080 and 5800x should have no problems with any headset or VR game. I have the HP G2. Pricewise, the Quests are best value for money, though of course you are supporting the evil Facebook empire if you go that way... :D

After reading the thread, I have the impression that people using SteamVR are having less performance than people using Oculus (where aviable). I just tested it on my old CV1 and I have the feeling that it is the case

  • If you only play Horizons, VR is great
  • If you play Odyssey, VR isn't great and not really supported
  • VR isn't going to be supported for Odyssey by FDEV going forward (rumour? True? Couldn't find an FDev statement)

  • The specs of my PC are in my sig below but essentially, it's a 5800x, 3080, 32GB (and I play at 4K). What is an ideal headset? (I feel drawn to the Oculus S for some reason).

I guess the big subjective question is: is ED worth playing in Oddy/VR at all and worth shelling out for headset?

Thanks.
VR in Odyssey contains the exact same implementation as in Horizons: in Space and in SRV's, there is no difference there, ( it looks a lot better though. It's a gorgeous title now ) but you won't be using Horizons default hardware for a great experience, it needs more beef. Your card is a good powerful one that will give you a great VR experience in Odyssey. I have a 3080ti and suffer no stutters (I don't play the on foot game, which is flat screen in the HMD, although, for just walking around you can use the camera suite and get a nice VR perspective from different angles). Even when I had my 2080ti, I had no problems in Odyssey VR. I don't even try to play in 4k, I see no need. I would rather an extremely smooth experience with great details, but trying to run it at ultra in 4K and expect no jumps, stutters etc.. Nope, and ...why? There is a new patch coming out on June 7, fingers crossed it improves optimisation even further.

As regard supporting VR going forward, the VR implementation we have now isn't going anywhere. Fdev have said that they don't foresee any extra work for headsets, BUT, I'm not so sure, what they say in one statement can very well turn 180 further down the line. VR at the moment is beginning to explode with the release of Quest2, Cambria is on the horizon, and Q3 will be here in a year I'm betting. Lots of new HMD's from a lot of brands. Also, Q2 outsold XBOX last Christmas, so I (and you can all refer back to this post - sometime in the future) believe Fdev WILL re-engage with VR again. It's a growing market. The big update on a core part of Elite Dangerous that Fdev have mentioned could mean engineering, exploration, etc.. BUT again, VR was a core point of E.D and I believe that it could be this that they are referring to.

As regard to shelling out for a headset. I have a collection of old Oculus sets.. and have a Quest 2, but I prefer to play Odyssey in the Rift S. The colours are a lot more vibrant, the black levels are great, and of course it's a hell of a lot more comfortable. There are no artefacts from streaming compression like from the PC to Q2 (which can smear quite a lot and be easy to see in space) A tiny bit of screen door if you really try to focus on it, but believe me, I have no problem reading anything in the cockpit (and my eyes are 57 yrs old) you'll not worry about it at all. Plus, as the Rift S runs at a lower resolution, it will be less demanding from your PC. So, if I were you, I'd try and get a Rift S for around 100 - 150 quid and try that. Longwinded response, but Yeah, Odyssey is a fantastic experience in VR with the caveats I mentioned.

I believe this too. I have it on Steam, but have never installed it. I bought straight from Fdev, and play via Oculus software. I mentioned this in a thread a week or so ago, but Yep, I'm with you.
