More good than bad.

I just wish that I could get out of the darn seat to see more of the world, I feel like I am stuck in a wheelchair.

So, in your opinion, what does Elite: Dangerous do well?

It....no, it doesn't. But it certainly....oh, not that either. Well, it makes Frontier a lot of money they didn't spend making the game good.

Pretty much everything...seriously. There are some issues here and there...but most of the things the game sets out to do, in the currently available release, is pretty darned good.

Everyone wants it to be their game and there is a nauseating level of entitlement with humans in all corners of the Universe. FD will make their game, if you like it, play it.

You're not very good at this positivity thing, are you? If the game gets sand in your britches this much then maybe you need a break from it.

Personally I love gliding round the terminator of a planet and docking at outposts in the dark. Love to see them all lit up like X-mas trees, a lonely bastion of humanity alone in the void. :)
.
And cruising round an unexplored system in super-cruise watching for relative motion. :)
.
Oh, and the sound. :)
.
Oh, and planetary ring cruising (!) isn't going to get old soon.
.
E: D does do a lot of things incredibly well.

Hard to know where to start. Yes the sound is awesome. The modern take on the classic Elite ships has been done superbly. Dog fighting is fun you never know if it's going to be an easy kill or a hard fight. Mining is spot on for me despite the complaints on here. Great visuals and yeah 30 years I've waited for them to make this and I am not disappointed. That's not to say there's not things I think could be improved but overall this game feels awesome!

as a few others have stated.. i too feel the sound designers nailed their portion solidly.. i LOVE the sounds.. from thrust, to boost, to weapon fire, to taking hits, to the subtle creaks and groans the ships produces as it flies.

one i havent seen mentioned is the weight of ships. the sidewinder, although the smallest player ship we have, is a large ship.. it feels weighty. but then when you get into the Lakons and the Anaconda (i havent gotten into a ASP as of yet) my brain screams huge.. heavy.. and i instinctively change my piloting methods. i can feel the thousands of tons of weight, and i love it.

the Graphics, Super cruising through a system and coming up upon a new (to me) planet and slowing down just so i can gawk at the beauty and the uniqueness of each one is really eating up a lot of my play time.

there are many more area i feel FD knocked it outta the park, and while there are areas that i feel they can improve on ( so major improvements needed) i am enjoying the ride and look forward to the trip.

Maybe I lack imagination or am just easily pleased, but really the only things I don't like about the game are the bugs - you know, the things we are supposed to be helping the devs to find.

I have an old CPU which only just cuts the mustard and even with a FPS sitting around 30 most of the time I think it looks great - can't wait to see it when I get around to upgrading... and get a better monitor... ooh, and the there will be the Rift when CV1 is released....

The stations are beautiful, some of the vistas are genuinely breathtaking and I really enjoy the gameplay. Much as the multiplayer aspect has taken a bashing I have to say that I backed it hoping desperately for single player offline, but despite the problems I think I am now at least as likely to play online having been through the beta.

Assuming the bugs are dealt with it's all thumbs up from me. Good job FD!

Elite : Dangerous is fantastic! Buggy as hell but fantastic! :D It's everything I wished for and more. Now about those bugs ... ;)

So, in your opinion, what does Elite: Dangerous do well?
Just my top 3:
  • Player skill based.
If it's the analog controle in dogfights or even better the knowledge I have as a player on e.g. the best trading route, that's what counts.
  • Exploration
Not only exploration for new planets etc. but allowing me as a player to figure out things on my own.
  • Freedom of choice
Being good, being bad, bit of both. Doing my own thing, playing with others. Hauling today, mercenary work tomorrow.
I was looking for this combination for quite some time.

I opened tickets about em bud...no worries they got it covered. I haz like 1 million prestige so anything I say gets taken care of...if not no release...so yeah, you're welcome

:D

Two cracks up in one night - stop! Too much! :D Time to add you as a friendly - see you in space commander!

Excellent Foundations:

The basics are in place, seem to be solid and working well. The building blocks seem to be being placed in the right order and with plenty of common sense. I am pretty fascinated to see how the whole thing develops. I think the Devs have delivered in spades so far.

Polished:

Now in Beta 3 most of the previous negative issues I have experienced seem ironed out, everything seems to be working fine considering this is still in beta. It seems the Devs seem to get many things RIGHT from the off, compared to many other games were you can easily end up banging your head against the wall when it comes to features, interface, glitches, controls etc. Top quality!

Potentially the top game of all time: ;)

Not much more to say, let's see how it all pans out down the line. Fingers crossed, for some reason I have good vibes on this one. :)

Freedom of choice and also something that hasnt been mentioned, The hard science behind the persistent galaxy, just love the astronomical "stuff" it's a science nerds wet dream!

While mining in a system out on the frontier, just me and six huge rocks all alone, I suddenly stopped and looked around at the immense empty darkness around me and felt like the only person in the universe. It sent a chill down my spine. I've never felt that immersed in a game before... or such a desire to head back to civilisation pronto :)
Well done FD.

For what it is, a Computer Game, it is so immersive!!!! Most time spent in the group, even the npc are somehow 'natural'. We had some bountyhunting on the navpoint, and it was pretty cool, to see the combat going on, or focusing on a Single Target, vanishing within seconds....... Scooping the loot as a compensation for the not awarded bounty for some reason.

I'm so tired about all these negative threads. I thought I'd make a thread where people could share the good things, or things they found impressive about elite dangerous.

As a new player, two things really stand out for me:

1) A+++ Sound design. Give that team a cigar. Not only is it unique and stuff you haven't commonly heard before in sci-fi games, but it knocks it out of the park. The sounds make the spaceship way more "real" to me, and I still get goosebumps when I spool up the hyperdrive.

2) Well done dogfighting gameplay. Not only is the flight model responsive, but there are many options when two players decide to dogfight besides just "shoot the other guy" Try and stealth off the radar? Prep heatsinks and go in guns-blazing? Target specific components with your weaponry? Or how about just charge up the FSD to escape? All are viable options.

At it's core, the dogfighting gameplay's wealth of options and power management makes it more than just moving turrets in space. If there's one thing frontier needed to get right, it's this core gameplay. In my opinion, they NAILED it. Moreover, they do so while allowing the option for a simple, arcade-like flight model. As an avid flight-sim and flight-arcade player, that's something that's deceptively hard to do.

So, in your opinion, what does Elite: Dangerous do well?

All I can say is.. FD, have made me a happy man, as I re-live my teenage years as an original elite gamer in '84. Yes, combat - they have nailed it well. The sounds just makes your hair stand on end as you hit that jump drive and you leap into the unknown. I do a live stream sometimes every day. If you ever want to watch out for it, the link is: http://www.twitch.tv/shoklar

In-fact, I've just finished a live stream and was bounty hunting with the cobra mkIII. Big improvements in open play for me, and I have an old gaming system I7 922 with gtx 560ti graphics and 6gb ram. I feel, it is time to upgrade and the upgrade will be well worth it for the game I love. Had some cool pvp fights with other commanders. Even the npcs fought back better than they usually do. Such a fun night.

Shok.

@OP - good thread :)

I never get tired of reading the positive comments about the sound design in this game. The audio designers really have done a fantastic job.

The best aspect of the game for me is not a single thing, but the way all the elements work together to conjure a compelling and immersive atmosphere. There is nothing quite like spending a few days out in the far reaches, exploring systems a long way from civilization, having encounters, etc and then returning to the safety of a starport. That feeling of "coming home" as you glide through to the landing pad is very special. It gets me every time.

That and the signature "mood" of the game. It's a dark and forbidding galaxy, end everything adds to the feeling, but it's not gloomy either. Mysterious, noble, dark, brooding, majestic and awe inspiring. I look forward to jumping into my ship and taking it for a spin sometimes, just to see sights I've not seen before.

Liqua's observation of width vs. depth is true, but I agree we should be confident and relaxed about this. The game will be functional on release (maybe with the aid of a patch or three :) ) but I'm sure there will be much more to come to flesh out existing functions and add new smaller features, besides the two big planned expansions.

Hooray for the happy....we may be the pessimistic people in the forum here chaps...l.o.l.....but at least we will not be disappointed on the 16th of next month. I think I am most looking forward to the planned freedom to walk around the space-station shops and buy some croissants and a coffee next year. Then perhaps the ''new'' next level of ships that even us oldies may never have seen in the ''original'' game.
Thirdly....I think what I like the most is that we have a complete new generation of players from young peeps to oldies like me and 'Shoklar' who played it the first time around, all getting to explore our local and distant systems that frankly look absolutely fabulous.
Oh and like you are thinking Shoklar........I have just updated the computer for the first time really in 7 years, from a Q6600 to an I5....just for the game, but it's worth it I believe.
