Playing in VR - where do I put my stuff?!!

The firstest of first world problems I know, but here goes…

I play VR (obviously) on an x-rocker chair.
I don’t have a desk, it’s all linked to a tv on a stand.
I have bolted my HOTAS to the chair arms, which works great. But there’s other accessories I need to hand, namely:-

  • VR headset (of course)
  • lens cloth
  • keyboard (for chat, galaxy map and F12)
  • mouse (to start the game and checking screenshots)
  • Xbox controller (for space legs)
  • mobile phone
  • pint of beer

Currently I sit on my chair with my kb, mouse, Xbox controller and phone balanced on my knees, if I take the headset off it goes on the floor. Drinks are on the floor.

I could get a little table but space is tight and I would rather have these things attached to the chair itself if possible.

I had a look at x-rocker accessories and can’t find anything suitable.

Any ideas?

It is a gloriously first world problem dude!

First things first, what type of beer drinker are you? A hoity-toity drinking beer out of a glass weakling or a proud can drinker like me? Either way, straw in can (or glass!) and a little cup-holder on the desk to minimise knocks.

For the rest of it, are you 100% sure you can't adapt?
I use a lot of VA, without the voice packs, which I for the basics. If you remove the tilt axis from the galaxy map, the map becomes much more manageable - I have used joystick and VA for everything in-game (bar chat) since I have had VR. Chat's a ballache though, which is why I consider myself blessed for being an unsocial git.

Here are the setups that my wife and I use. You can see the little table to her left. I just pull the chair forward and use the PC desk. Although we are in the same room we still communicate via discord so need headphones. But we manage comfortably with everything. Yes we sometimes need to go to external sites but that's really rare. Once or twice per session.

I have my HOTAS and keyboard on a small lap desk, maybe this would or for you.

Erm... sorry

Superb! You have a VR armchair - a VRmchair if you will - you can have that if you like :D

I do use VA when I'm using the headphones, but the x rocker is so so good at producing bassy, rumbling sound I have to have that turned right up - and VA then picks some sounds up and thinks I'm speaking, so when I boost for example it thinks I'm saying "Shields" and moves my pips to systems accordingly... it's funny but annoying, so I generally just turn VA off.

I might well get me one of those for the keyboard and mouse, although I am trying to free up my lap if I can..

Shouldn't the VR headset be on your head?
Lol usually yes. Sometimes though, for screenshots for example, or if I am on the phone, it has to come off, and I want something to hang it from my chair. I might get something like a plastic hook for towels - that might do the trick.

Here's my chair (the CV1 since replaced with the Quest2, and I have a lot more stuff in and around the room, hence the lack of space I now have)

I know a friend who uses a Workmate to place his HOTAS on and 2 footstalls ( 1 either side ) with MDF on each for his wireless K&M etc... Get VoiceAttack (invaluable) too, set F12 to a voice prompt, reset, centre.. etc.. and it'll do it for you. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=voiceattack+elite+dangerous

I don't play at my desk either. My pilot's chair is an IKEA Poäng, and my flying gear is mounted to a... I think you call it sawhorse in english. It's this one. It houses (from left to right) my throttle, a streamdeck that I use as button box, a small wireless keyboard and my stick. The streamdeck and keyboard are mounted with velcro, the throttle and stick with cable ties. I mounted a small usb hub where everything is connected, so I only have one usb cable running to my desk (I connect the assembly to an active USB hub), and I can disconnect the stuff quickly to move it aside. I also have a small side table next to my chair for the mouse, a drink, phone and other stuff I might need. For short breaks I place my headset on that table, too, for longer breaks I disconnect the headset cable from the cable management system and put it on the shelf on the wall.

Are you able to suspend your headset from the ceiling with a retractable pulley system like they do in those VR arcades? I'm about to do that in my gym right above my elliptical as soon as I replace my ceiling fan.

I don't know what they have in VR arcades, but I do have a pulley system on my ceiling. It suspends the cable, not the headset. I got mine on Amazon, it's made by Kiwi Design. I guess the pulleys are strong enough to hold the headset.

Yeah I have similar. Not a pulley per se but a hanging clip for the wire. It definitely helps when playing stand up VR games, but I don’t bother with it when flying

I use tue pulley when sitting too, because otherwise the cable keeps getting stuck between my shoulders and the back of my chair. It's pretty much mandatory for roomscale though :) .

You should see what it's like here: About an hour ago, I had to get up from my armchair, to turn the dimmer on my light up (note to self: get a remote control light dimmer), because I thought I saw a scratch on my Rickenbacker. Imagine my relief, when I realised that it was just a fibre, from my housemaid's feather duster. If I am out of bed when she comes in to work tomorrow, I will be having words.

To the OP. THe mouse thing can be sorted (although I have everything bound to my HOTAS, after many years of setting up the bindings).

I bought a cheap(ish) roller ball to replace the mouse. The only problem (major in VR, really), is that the ball would fall out, so I had to make a board with a slightly smaller hole, and an opening for the buttons, and attach that to my chair. The pricier roller balls don't have this issue, so it's budget/DIY skills dependent.

I'm fortunate to have a fairly good sized room for my setup so I use other furniture to store the VR and Hotas equipment when not in use. The trick is being able to switch your workspace into a sim/gaming space in say 5-10mins whilst keeping the room functional and presentable for others. The lighthouse tracking stations I have mounted on the wall and I just power those off when not in use.... cable is a bit messy but you get used to it after a while.
