Left handed cockpit

So I was out doing some minig yesterday and tried out mouselook because it seemed a laugh. I then realised me little dream of getting an Occulus Rift at some point is going to be scuppered by the fact my Avatar is holding his joystick in the wrong hand.

The ongoing hatred of the left handed continues.

Seriously though... and option to make your avatar left handed would be really cool.

No point voting for this, we will probably not get more than about 10% support for the sinister cause. When we one day take over the world, and force all the righteous to use scissors that doesn't cut it, they will know the errror of their ways. Until then, *right* on Commander. :)

Oh. Oh the pain.
Funny oh so funny.
But the puns, the stomach cannae take it commander.

What about holding the Joystick in his right hand and throttle in the left makes the Avatar "Right handed"?

I'm left handed myself but use my controllers the same way set out in the game. Changing the Avatar to being left handed as you say won't change the way the controls are laid out in the ships. You just have to get used to it like way you have to get used to the way the controls for a car are laid out.

When we get to leave the cockpit and walk about and hopefully use tools and weapons then it will be useful to be able to change what hand the Avatar uses.

Ok, He's holding the joystick with the other hand to the one I'm holding it with (and I went to a lot of trouble finding a joystick that I could use in my left hand).

I just think if I was using a rift it'd do my head in.

I'm left handed too, just glad the Avatar sits on the left side side of the cockpit in the Cobra, feels better with trackIR and the rift. I saw a video of the imperial clipper, as stupid as it sounds, I don't think I'll buy it since you sit on the right side. Feels strange, don't even like driving in the UK because it feels weird being on the right side

I must get one of them, then.
Hip! Hip! for RH drive. :D

Thought more of you UK folks would support this. All y'all are lucky I didn't run anyone over when I was driving across the English countryside a little while ago. Suffice to say, that I had green grass stains all over my left tires and a complete existential crisis shifting a standard with my left hand.

Though, after a couple days it was fine. I think the whole left-handed right-handed thing is a massive conspiracy wrought by the New World Order to create a perceived under-class. :p You just get used to using one hand because that is all you need for most tasks, right? /jk

Ambidextrous FTW

So the view will always be a bit jarring. Maybe we should have three options...left side, right side joystick...then another set of options, center joystick left and right handed...

I always found it odd to see the joystick on the side...I've always pictured it in the center for every other game...but those games didnt' show you what "you" were doing anyway

I am right handed, but I think it should be pretty simple for devs to add that option... being considerate and all ;)

I use oculus too and indeed that is very important for the proprioceptive effect.

Being from the UK I totally understand the "You'll get used to it thing" but as I have the option when I'm playing the game I'm using the left.

If I'm ever able to afford an Occulus (and we're talking the release model I'm guessing) I'm hoping it's modifiable by then. Otherwise it'll be weird.

But really I'm just randomly waffling while I wait for the 22nd.

Y'all do know that the joystick in the right and throttle in the left is almost universally used in aviation today, right? Disregarding civilian aircraft and those with a 'yoke' that is

Yes, at least as far as those without side-by-side seating go, right hand stick, left hand throttle/collective is the rule, and left-handed pilots adapt to it.

I have difficulty believing that those with normal levels of functionality could possibly have significant issue mastering the use of a joystick with either hand.

And this is why I program computers and don't fly planes. But it's the 34th Century! You'd think they'd be able to easily provide a different layout easily enough.

Like I say, the only thing about it that bothers me is it reduces my chance of spending a load of money on a Occulus because the immersion will get broken.

I'll take that as you not calling me sub normal. Yes I could probably get used to flying with the joystick in my right hand and then I'd be able to get a HOTAS unit and be all happy. But I'm buggered if I'm putting that level of effort into a game.

I don't get enough free time as it is. Chosing to cripple myself because my right hand motor control is not as refined as my left seems crazy.

I've been using joysticks left-handed since they invented the things and plugged them into an Atari 2600. Then for ED I finally bought a standard HOTAS. Note that this was not an easy decision as the HOTAS is expensive! But I went for it and within two hours of game play it felt totally natural. Your brain will quickly relearn the motor skills needed.

We've all been doing this for years with all the Nintendo, X-Box and Play Station controls. The same goes for R/C aircraft radio transmitters. These sneaky manufacturers were training us to be right-handed! Thus you already have the skills. All you have to do is give them a try.

I actually found this to be an advantage over righties as all the important throttle, boost, reverse, lateral and vertical thrusters are now controlled by the left hand. Mastering these makes all the difference in a dogfight.

Of course being left-handed and growing up with right-handed tools, custom left-handed rulers or scissors drives me nuts!

Yes, I would have thought so too.

All y'all are lucky I didn't run anyone over when I was driving in New Mexico a couple of years ago. ;)

Now this is something that you can really blame the French for.
M. Bonaparte changed the rules in Europe as he did not want to follow the English. (I am not English but from one of the other kingdoms BTW).

Ambidextrous FTW

After a couple of hours I adapted to driving on the wrong side of the road.
I am not Ambidextrous but I seem to have no trouble swapping left for right. I can write mirror image with more style than I write normally.

I only have 1 working hand... the left

You mentioned that previously IIRC.
How have you coped doing everything left handed?
Having a stroke is a terror for most of us.

You're most likely cross lateral. Many of us lefties are because there are no genes for left handedness, only right, and it depends which of the many right handed genes you have whether you're totally left, totally right, ambidextrous or cross lateral.
I use my left hand for writing, using a spoon and chopsticks (although I can use them in my right hand), everything else is right hand dominant. I'm left eye dominant but thanks to the A-Team shoot using my right eye (if I use a barrel red dot sight I see the left side of the barrel floating in front of me so I tend to use open red dot sights).
With pool/snooker neither way feels particularly natural, but I don't have to do that behind the back shot that righties do.
I'm a whiz at Jenga :)

Rejoice in having the best of both, the intelligence and problem solving skills that come with being a leftie, and the ease of using devices that are designed for a rightie!

I use oculus too and......

HAHAHAHA I thought you were gonna say that since you use oculus the devs should provide them ... being considerate and all ;)
