Odyssey engineers blueprint pin - Where art thou?

Thanks for letting us know - I'm taking a look into this.
Hi Bruce, similarly............. Exobiology.

I don't mean this nastily, but the planetary heat signature looked like a very cool idea, that was found to have some issues and then was pretty much abandoned (in a more or less workable state) but with none of the coolness that the concept promised. Obviously FD have had bigger issues to fix than this, but in conjunction with the dropped Exobiology scan activity, it (to me) makes a mockery of having a separate Exobiology rank, something I was really look forward to.

It would be very nice to hear that FD has some plans to address the deficiencies in the Exobiology gameplay. Is there any chance you could investigate?

I didn't even think of that. You might be the gaming equivalent of a student reminding the teacher he/she/xi didn't hand out homework assignments yet. If this means FC interiors are delayed again, I'll be waiting for you after Crafts & Arts.
I got the bucket of feathers and bag of tar ready.

Hi Angus,

Don't worry - you haven't come across nastily at all. Please let me know what you consider to be the main issues with Exobiology so I can approach the dev team with solid examples.

With all due respect, issues with and suggestions for Exobiology have been discussed often and in length over the past 8 months. Browsing through the threads below would give you and your colleagues a much wider range of opinions.

Please, let's keep this one about Odyssey engineering blueprint pinning
I'm sorry. :(

Cheers Bruce, first and foremost, for me, it's the complete lack of player agency when taking samples with the scanner, on foot. I understand the "reflex game" was very unpopular, but I would personally prefer that to......... NOTHING!!!

I'm just going to say that one more time again....... NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! :)

An idea that was floating around, was while viewing the sample from the scanner, you could have to connect up matching 3D wire frame polygons (DNA molecules?) in a simple Elite style "bumper cars mechanic" using the basic ship steering controls, that could be brilliant. You could have "3 lives" so that it started very easy, so everybody could succeed, but the further you got into it, the more complete sample you handed in, and the greater the reward.

The other big thing for me, is the missed opporrtunity with the planetary heat maps (or whatever they're called now). I gather they originally had some logic to them, but nowadays you can look on Youtube for an explanation and THOSE folks are saying they don't really understand it. It seems weird if your ship's systems can say there's 3 biological variants down there, but it can't tell you where any of them are. I love the heat maps in principle, but the gameplay they represent is confusing and lacks challenge. I'd be fine with it being harder if it was more engaging. It ought to feel sciencey and cool. And again, in my view, it really doesn't.

I hope that makes my view clearer, I think what happened is, the plan was to expand Exobiology into something cool and deserving it's own Elite attribute, but with the various issues that came up when Odyssey was initially released, it got drowned (understandably) by other priorities.

Thanks for listening, and I acknowledge there's far more dedicated Exobiologists around here who will have considered viewpoints every bit as heartfelt as mine. :)

Oh please no. No reaction games when taking a sample. This was discussed to death when it first came out which was why the silly reaction minigame was thankfully removed.

Real biologists don't play some game when they're taking a snip from a leaf or whatever - and even though this is a game, having to play some minigame just to take a sample of something is just too much load on one's suspension of disbelief.

I do understand your unhappiness about Exo-biology. There is something missing in it. IMO it's the sameness in the life being found - there's just no variety, just a fixed number of genus and small variations in species per genus.

As for adding some kind of minigame or more involvement in the process - that should probably be done after 3 samples of a Thing have been taken - at the analysis stage. But I cannot think of what would be an entertaining and rewarding minigame experience whilst analysing the samples.

Other criticisms of Exo-biology and this one I find pretty annoying, is you can only select heatmap parameters whilst in orbital/supercruise AND only in the surface scanner screen. One should be able to select the heatmap and be able to select the bio type without having to enter the probemap screen (for which again you need to be at a certain altitude above the planet surface in supercruise.)

The sample tool's pulse is more or less useless and redundant; when searching for a species a player is not walking about the surface, they're in an SRV driving around using Mk1 Eyeball to find the next thing to sample, and then it's a case of departing the SRV, take the sample, then back in the SRV and driving around again. Using the sample tool pulse is useless because of its limited range and the next viable sample is outwith that range. There is no sample tool pulse available on the SRV either.

So yeah, Exobiology needs further improvement and refinement. But a sample mini-game - as discussed to death in previous threads - is not a solution. It would just put many off.

I think you might have misunderstood me. Maybe not though.
I don't like the term mini-game, I think it trivialises the subject and is sometimes meant to do so.
I'm talking about a process in the game. Like docking your ship, or interrogating a computer, or ship to ship combat, or mining an asteroid.
This would be, that part of the game, known as scanning a sample, although actually it would involve some manipulation of the sample in addition to the scan.

It could be achieved painlessly by people uninterested in the process (like docking) automatically, but, by choosing to go manual, you would have the ability to get more complete data, and thus an improved reward.

It would not be a reaction test, but based more on dexterity.

As I say, it could be very like deep core mining an asteroid, everyone can do it, but you are rewarded for finesse.

Just a glance at the visuals in this clip suggests all sorts of possibilities to me:

Well, I'm not Angus, but if you are interested in others' feedback on the matter as well, I compiled a list of my issues with Exobiology and some proposed solutions to them. Since I'd rather not derail this thread, I made a new thread elsewhere.

So it seems this has been totally forgotten / swept under the carpet.

If a CM takes the time to actually respond (which is great) then they should at least follow that up with an answer, although judging by the live streams it's likely to be 'sorry we have nothing to report on that right now' or a version thereof.

Same with the Odyssey engineering thread, 'give us your feedback, how could we improve engineering?' That was 7-8 months ago and still nothing has come of that.

Why ask, why appear interested if you have no intention of ever responding or acting on the feedback you requested? The appearance of community management without any actual community management.

  • Odyssey Engineers: Added pin blueprint functionality
  • Bartender: Added a pin icon for resources needed for pinned blueprints.

Any news about this feature?

Is this the first time you've raised it? I might have lost track of people asking in previous conversations so absolutely remind me!!
Well... the blueprint pinning does not seem to exist at all.
I thought it is common knowledge by now and everyone is waiting patiently for them to come in the next fix or in Update 9 😊
It's not common knowledge unless it's absolutely got my name pinged all over it!!!!!!
On the case.

Sally?

Thanks for letting us know - I'm taking a look into this.

Bruce?

Been 8+ months since been announced and missing, but who's counting? 😂
