You'll certainly earn a heck of a lot of rep :)

Flicking FA-OFF and ON is a very handy skill to master when it comes to landing on High G planets. Especially if you're not landing on a landing pad.
It's actually pretty handy, even on low-g. I've been using it in Odyssey when landing for exobiology. Frequently when you encounter those rough areas where there's only a tiny spot where the landing light flickers on, if you try to use vertical thrust to go down, unless your ship is perfectly level you'll inevitably move laterally a bit during the descent and the landing light will go out again. But if you turn Flight Assist off then you'll fall absolutely vertically and will typically then land OK.

It was a more a case of "Ok, I'm over the landing spot, now what?" I'd seen somewhere this was the thing to do on high G landings, so I tried it and it worked better than expected. And I've had the problem of the landing ok light going off as I descend over rough terrain, so I'll have to remember it for that as well.

My biggest problem was finding the right landing pad, cos everything I'd seen said to hold the ship level, or the thrusters won't be able to keep it up, and of course if you do that you can't look down. Maybe if I'm still a couple of kms high, there's time to bob the nose down and find the pad, and then get the ship level again before I plummet into a self-made crater. There's still time to figure it out, though.

When I am in glide on any planet, I am aiming towards the relevant pad size for my ship. Then I look at my Nav panel and highlight Request Docking, so that as soon as I come out of glide I request docking. Then you look ahead and have a few seconds to spot which landing pad has highlighted, and work it out from there.

If you think you're going to hit the ground, never be afraid to pitch up and boost so you do a loop. Losing a bit of time is better than exploding :D

But as Sulu said, experiment and see what works best for you.

Ok, that worked. Only went splat once when I took the Courier round tonight. :D

Interesting ... took the Bananery Fandango for a spin around the course, survived all the landings but then cooked the ship to 210% trying to align for the jump away from Weber Legacy, melted the cargo hatch and lost all my Crystalline Spheres to the void. Had not anticipated that!

Nasty.

I might actually add this to the OP so that it might help both new and older members alike :) I remember having a few rather spectacular fails on the course last time and trying to work out why it was.

Actually, I've developed a long term habit (honestly couldn't remember why until this morning) - when I'm jumping away from a planet to a star that's just above the horizon, my natural tendency (because of a preference for pitching up rather than down) is to end up upside down as in your video. In this orientation the vertical thrusters tend not to stabilise the fall back towards the planet and lead to the problem you illustrate. The habit I've developed is to roll back the right way up and to always aim slightly above the target star. I've been doing this for years without really remembering why. I now recall that it's to address this problem by allowing my vert's to counter gravity and give me a direction of travel that's more inline with the exit jump.

Never thought of that, I tend to boost upwards at 45 degrees and roll over to line up as the jump comes in. Never gave orientation a thought.

CMDR Edelgard von Rhein
Unlimited: Adder: Swept Under the Carpet, optionally, Dolphin: Whisper of Freedom
Regulation Cobra MkIII: Null Geodesic

The first time around, this was the race that taught me how to handle high-g worlds, though I've not since landed on anything higher than in the race. It will be interesting to see how much I've learned/forgotten (and how much I need to relearn) in the meantime.

I remember that happening with my Imperial Courier last time.
If I get it wrong again, my Adder's name will be particularly appropriate (I originally named it for the role of cold-running smuggler but it has seen more use as a shuttle and racing ship).
