'4.0' | Launches Tomorrow

Edit: also given that we will have separate hor4 and ody4 instancing … we still can’t play together on 4.0⁈
Well, they did tell us that months ago, so that's not a surprise

What Sally has posted is correct. When the option to launch in 4.0 is made available to all PC players, instancing will be separate between 3.8 and 4.0 (as it has always been) AND separate between Horizons and Odyssey on 4.0. There's no final state to confirm in situations like this which are always open to re-evaluation. If the situation changes, we'll make an announcement to that effect.

Edit: Well, 'A' month :) (Seemed longer)
Edit2: Ah yes, because EDO players don't have access to EDH4.0 we can't instance - my misunderstanding.

Wow, this double "launch" is a bit tight, to put it mildly.
You guys are really crunching on this week. 💪

Odyssey Players (players who have purchased Odyssey):
  • Odyssey (4.0)
  • Horizons (3.8) : Horizons content only.

Horizons Players (players who have not purchased Odyssey):
  • Horizons (4.0)
  • Horizons (3.8) : Horizons content only.

(Arena and Combat Training will remain for both).

Now this ☝️ is a bit confusing and... unexpected

I hoped my Odyssey enabled account could load Horizons 4.0 and play along someone that has only Horizons 4.0
Which would mean that my Odyssey enabled accounts will have in their launcher
  • Elite Dangerous Odyssey 4.0
  • Elite Dangerous Horizons 4.0
  • Elite Dangerous 4.0
  • Elite Dangerous Horizons 3.8
  • Elite Dangerous 3.8
  • Arena
  • Combat Training
Currently the two yellow lines are missing from our launchers.
With the obvious possibility of uninstalling the 3.8 Client alltogether

They clairfied not long ago that there would be no instancing between Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey 4.0 so its a moot point about missing lots of variations in the launcher. Why would there be a "Elite Dangerous 4.0"?!

So let me get this straight ... If you own Odyssey, you have no option to play with friends in Horizons 4.0, but must both switch to Horizons 3.8?

Because you could play with friends who only got Horizons for instance? As I get it, there will be no instancing between Horizons 4.0 and Odyssey. And the base game was most useful in cases where you got stuck on planets and needed your ship back, but maybe that's no longer the case.

O7,
🙃

Because it would be a "base game, but 4.0 client" option, usable for fixing cases of "stuck SRV" without resorting to a support ticket, and it would allow anyone not interested in 3.8 Horizons at all to completely uninstall that client and save disk space.

Of course what we really need is a Main Menu option "Return To Orbit" so we don't even need to be able to launch the base game of any version.

As a third-party developer who has to check if things are acting differently on different client versions the lack of "4.0 Horizons" on an Odyssey-enabled account is going to cause some pain. Sure, I have a non-EDO Steam account, plus an EGS copy from the giveaway there, but that entails not only quitting out of the game, but also the launcher each time, so as to be able to run the other launcher, and thus the other version of the game (yes, I know there are ways to run the game client otherwise that would work around this).

Having "4.0 Horizons" available to my Odyssey account would make things much simpler, even if it's at the cost of extra disk space usage.

Erm ... I must have missed something, sorry. Is the option for Horizons 4.0 turning up automatically by tomorrow, after the update, or is some action required to enable it?
