What Minimum Animals Do We Still Need to Make a Good Region Specific Part of a Zoo?

Today is October 14th, 2022 and next week the Twilight Pack will release as Planet Zoo's 11th dlc. We will have exactly 140 animals in the vanilla game on it's release. Despite the numerous dlc and quite large launch roster, there are still areas of the world that do not have enough animals to make good representative zoo sections. What are the absolute most crucial (based on the game's limitations) animals that should be added by PZ's end of life?

Oceania, Australia and New Zealand
  • Tasmanian devil
  • Bennet's wallaby (or the general red-necked wallaby)
  • Emu
  • A species of kiwi
  • Tree Kangaroo
Still the travesty of this game. Desperately underrepresented in fauna several years after the Australia Pack launched. There was only a singular representative on the game's launch, which after 11 dlc will now be 7 (habitat) animals in total. The above 5 animals being added would bring it up to a respectable 12, with the potential for a bat or avian bird species or two depending on the game's future. All of the above are very common if not in Western Zoos, in Australian mainland zoos.

South America and Central America
  • Howler monkey species
  • Spider monkey species
  • Maned wolf or spectacled brown bear as one last large carnivore
  • Peccary species
  • Coatimundi species
  • Armadillo species
  • Tamandua or sloth species as an arboreal small mammal
South America is in a lot better shape than Oceania. It launched with just one habitat species, the Galapagos Island tortoise. Central America is part of North America, though if we count it as a Neotropical region it makes sense, in this case, to join it with South America for the purposes of this post. That brings it to two animals on launch with the Baird's tapir. Though what South America most misses at this point is avian birds and perhaps a snake or two, Planet Zoo in general is dreadfully underrepresenting small mammals and monkeys, two of the most important zoo "categories". There are currently 10 South American and/or Central America habitat animals in the game. These 7 would bring that number up to a healthy 17 and give us much more diversity in the type of animals we can build for and showcase.

North Africa and the Middle East
  • Dromedary
  • Hamadryas baboon
  • Caracal
  • Jackal species
  • Bustard species
  • Nile crocodile
  • African crested porcupine
With a paltry 2 habitat species, this is technically the worst of the 3 regions. Given it's lack of biodiversity comparably, though, it's not actually as bad as it seems. That being said, there are some key animals we could get that would finally make it possible to make a fantastic MENA themed zoo section, which is more than fitting given we have a MENA themed building set. I'm not crazy on the dromedary and Nile crocodile personally, but they are staple zoo animals that should've been in since launch, so I included them here. We need more small cats still, and golden jackals double as a Euro species, as does the porcupine. The baboon and bustard are self explanatory.

I'm leaving Europe off, as there are only five animals I could think off that would be needed:
  • Wisent
  • Boar
  • Wolverine
  • Eurasian brown bear
  • Eurasian wolf
Of those, 3 are far too similar in either function, appearance, or both, to launch roster species. Especially the bear and wolf (hey Frontier, keep that in notes for PZ2!). Plus with the Twilight Pack, both North America and Europe got a good boost. Even though raccoons and skunks aren't native to Europe, they do happen to be common in collections there. It is the least biodeiverse continent save Antarctica, so I think it's appropriate to excempt it from this post.

I'd agree with these. I think India could do with some extra attention too - Asia has broadly done pretty well out of DLCs, but India specifically hasn't had any additions (I don't think? I mean, there's almost a bit of clouded leopard range there, I guess). The big ticket animals are covered - elephant, rhino, and tiger, but the lack of hoofstock, small animals, and primates (and birds, but that's true of everywhere) makes a properly fleshed-out regional area impossible - seems like an oversight, especially as there's a whole themed building set which is very India specific.

Maybe fossa so we can also have the islands carnivore next to our lemur exhibits. Some carribean animals, flamingo and manatee would also be nice.

India could use more animals alo, it has alot nice ungulates muntjacs, chitals, nilgai, blackbuck...and alot of monkeys!

For me, overall the absolute most crucial and yet minimum need is the Oceania region, and I'd go with the five @Bearcat9948 brought up. The Tasmanian Devil, Emu, and a species of a kiwi, Tree Kangaroo and Wallaby. Even though I got "My" wombat in, I'm not going to stop pushing for more Oceanian animals. But really though, another 3 habitat animals would get us to 10, which is where I draw the line at beginning to seem acceptable. More is always welcome though.

South America - Being that I'm not really a primate enthusiast aside from the basic handful, I'd only add in the Howler Monkey here. A sloth is absolutely necessary, and the Maned Wolf would give us more representations for the South American grasslands. I'd really like to add the Spectacled Bear here for a more mountainous representative, but I can't quite justify it's essential. Maybe borderline. I know that's a lot less than many people would say, but that's where I'm at.

Again, for just my needs, North America, Europe, most of Asia are covered. Even though my new #1 want (the Wolverine) has a range in all of these, I don't feel like it's absolutely necessary to represent a region. It just would be nice to have.

Africa in general is covered, but North Africa and the Middle East Asia could use some additions. For me personally just the Crested Porcupine is my minimum critical need. there's others I'd like to see and it would make sense to have, but I can't say they're needed for my personal judgement of how complete a region feels. But like Oceania I guess another 3-5 non-specific animals from that region would be welcome.

So yeah, roughly 5 animals from Oceania, 3 or 4 from South America and roughly 5 from North Africa/Middle East with only one real specific request.

We could all come up with essential animals and everyone’s list would be different. No offense to anyone but I wouldn’t necessarily consider the Nile crocodile or jackal essential or really needed. If we got them that’s great but I think I’d favor another wolf especially maned wolf or even the coyote over a jackal personally. Probably just the maned wolf or raccoon dog in a game heavy in canids. Definitely need more monkey and bird species. I get the lack of oceana animals but in most zoos this unfortunately is always the least represented section. So far we have the platypus, wombat, cassowary, kangaroo, koala, and dingo. Add the Tasmanian devil, emu, and wallaby it’s a pretty realistic representation in most zoos. Many and I mean many don’t even have that. Throw the echidna or tree kangaroo or both and I think that’s more then good. I definitely hope the kiwi comes for people requesting them. Heck I could never get sick of Asian or African animals. Amazing animals from these continents also.

The trouble that I - and perhaps one or two others (I believe we have a couple more NZ members here now) - face, is that you can't really lump NZ and Australia together as 'Oceania' if you actually care about diversity. The 'Oceania' tag is arbitrary, as is the geopolitical designation. It's based only on history, culture, and economics, but not on biodiversity. So really, adding all those animals you mentioned in doesn't satisfy 'Oceania'; it only satisfies 'Australia'.

As always, though, I never ask for much; the kiwi as a habitat animal, the tuatara as an exhibit animal, and if they do ever convert the walkthrough exhibit into an aviary, the kea as well (though, as disappointed as I'd be, if they skipped it but still gave me the other two I'd be satisfied). The little blue penguin would be a realistic bonus (and covers Australia, too). That would do me just fine. Naturally I want more, but realistically this is the minimum I'd expect.

Completely agree here. I'd still fully support an Oceania animal pack and along with the needed Kiwi, I'd include the Little Blue Penguin and Tautara. Adding in Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo would give us additional non-Australian Oceanian representation. For me personally, the main two Australian animals I am wanting are the Emu and Tasmanian Devil. So it's accurate to say I'd want more animals from New Zealand than Australia. I'm hoping there will be a further increase in forum posters who are interested in New Zealand fauna.

I'm not sure you get what I was saying here. I'm not necessarily saying those are essential for the game itself, I'm saying they would be essential for making an area themed (in this case) around North Africa. I would say it's not an uncommon region to have a zoo section themed around, but right now there are only 2 habitat animals. So if you did want to make a MENA themed area, both of those would be more essential to its creation.

I think the sloth is the most essential animal for South/Central America. It is one of the only missing ABC zoo animals, and (for me) one of only three animals that I REALLY desire in-game. There is nothing else like it in-game, nothing that can possibly stand in or one. Of all the missing South American animals, a sloth is probably the most important inclusion from here on in.

The choice of animals to include could potentially be "infinite".

In general there are still a myriad of common animals in zoos to insert ingame, but above all the most unworthily underrepresented region, an abomination the lack of its animals, is surely South America!

It is incredibly subjective based on individual preference and which areas each person is trying to represent.

For Oceania, I would like to get emu, wallaby, kiwi, and a tree kangaroo at a minimum. Fantastic, but not as essential for me, would be Tassie, any quoll, tuatara, Victoria crowned pigeon and black swan.

I would say south america is lacking and is not in a better shape than oceania. Other than the animals you listed we also need a lot of birds (macaws, parrots, toucans, scarlet ibis, roseate spoonbill, harpy eagle) and some big and common names in zoos like the greater rhea, the patagonian mara, the ocelot and some species of tamarin or marmoset.

Also you didn't listed Asia at all and i think there are still quite a couple of species that would be a good addition to the game... primates for starters: another gibbon species (although no the highest priority) but could also be any species of langur (and a personal wish for the golden snub nosed monkey but i don't consider it essential to the game as whole). Also hervibores like the takin and the blackbuck. Some birds like the golden pheasant and the mandarin duck. And we need at least one species of stork... if not marabou stork for africa then at least the painted stork. A fishing cat and a palla's cat would be welcome additions as well. And of course the indian cobra and indian hornbill (or any hornbill)

Also even despite Africa is well represented just like with Asia some more species that are popular and well know would be great inclusions: mantled guereza, dik dik, red river hog, greater kudu, secretary bird and grey crowned crane.

Yes, I agree. The porcupine right behind it, but to me the sloth is easily the most recognizable animal that could currently be in the game that is not. By that, ruling out all marine animals, and flying birds.

North Africa in nutshell.
1665863202048.png

PZ animals still present in these countries:
  • Fennec Fox
  • Red Fox
  • Nile Monitor
  • Greater Flamingo
  • Cheetah
Exhibits:
  • Egyptian Fruit Bat
  • Dung Beetle
PZ animals locally extinct in these countries:
  • African Bush Elephant
  • Northern (West African) Lion
  • Scimitar-horned Oryx
  • Common Ostrich
  • Common Hippopotamus
Animal Count: 5 extant species / 5 extirpated species / 2 exhibits = 10 (+2)

Possible inclusions
  • Crested Porcupine
  • Barbary Macaque
  • Dromadery Camel

Imo, we can cut those lists down even further.

There are only 3 essential animals left for oceania from an international perspective, those being the emu, wallaby and tree kangaroo, 2 of them being extremly common and one being decently common.
BUT its only fair to give the region some local zoo animals, adding the lyre bird, kiwi and little blue penguin to that list, all 3 of which would also help the struggling bird roster.
In spite of its popularity, i wouldnt see the tasmanian devil as essential but u would certanly love seeing them in the game, eventhough all the animals mentioned above are in my opinion much more important to flesh out australia, new guinea and new zealand.

Europe id say, stop the eurasian wolf and eurasian brown bear nonsense, thats mod territory or Aniversery animals, not something id ever want to see in a dlc slot.
There is just one animal i see as essential to make an europe themed area in a zoo, and thats the wild boar, which would finish the most important european forest animals, but for general use id also add the alpine marmor so that atleast a small alps themed area is possible and atleast 1 of the white stork, mute swan and mallard duck as water fowl and birds to represent ponds, parks and wet lands.

NA is good besides birds, but i dont know enough to judge what bird is best.
What i do know is that the area south of the USA lacks representation, so the best all terrain fix would be the collared peccary, filling up the deserts and rainforests of middle and south america.
And theres a second one that i personally dont care for but defenetly is needed to build a local american area is the white tailed deer.
You cant believe in red and fallow deer greatness without recognising that americans also deserve their common deer.

South Saharan Africa needs 2 things, atleast one monkey and a bird.
Imo something like the de brazas monkey and the marabu stork would work out quite nicly to fill up the tropics and wetlands a bit more, but any monkey or bird would work.

MENA needs the dromedary and thats it.
Everything else is a cool bonus, but imo the onix and fox allready work very well together as a 2 animal themed area with most other animals either overlapping with them (sandcat, addax, arabian oryx) or not vibing with the sand desert like they do.
I can totally see the arguments for hamadryas baboons and barbary sheeps as a second 2 animal combo to add for mena, but just speaking about a themed area the former and the latter dont really vibe well with each other, but this is quite the subjective statement so i can totally see people seeing it otherwise.

For asia, while there are no animals needed anymore for asia in general, it has quite the few areas that feel like they are so close to being considerd their own sub regions, so while non of these animals are necessary in the grant sceme of things, i do believe that they regard some missed potential and black spots that could be filled to make asia sections much more diverse and interesting.

While South East Asia is quite amazing the way that it is, it would be quite easy for frontier to elevate Sulawesi to its own distinct small themed area.
We allready got the babirusa and the addition of the celebes crested macaque and anoa in something like an island animal pack is a realistic way to elevate the area, that seems quite likly for frontier to do.

For central Asia there is one big flaw.
We got 3 apex predators for the himalaya (HBB, snow leopard, asiatic black bear), a small arboreal animal aaaaaand...nothing.
Which is a shame as the himalaya is such a unique and majestic space.
Adding the palas cat, domestic yak and himalayan monal would elevate this area to an actual subsection.

And lastly, i want to take a look at the amur river region, a place allready represented quite a bit that could use a bit of love to exceed even more just being Skandinavia + tiger and asiatic black bear like it allready started with the leopard crane and dhole.
The yellow throated marten, chinese softshell turtle and mandarin duck would all 3 be a first for us and also further enhance one of the coolest underappreciated regions.

Now for the elephant in the room, south america.
In my humble opinion south america sucks and will allways suck for one region: monkeys.

Monkeys are to south america what antelopes are to africa, an essential back bone that should have a diverse and varried roster to pick and choose from.
We got 10 antelopes in the game, 8 being base game + even more miscelanious savanah ungunlates like giraffes, buffalo, zebra or the warthog.
To south america, this should be comparable in arboreal animals, about 8-12 monkeys and a few other aboreal animals like coatis, kinkajous, tamanduas and sloths.

But we got one.
One arboreal animal thats also a monkey.
Yes we can gradually get more south american animals, but this is the main problem weighing south america down. More then any other continent it needs a huge variety in one kind of animal that it just does not have.
I have no doubt in my mind that everything besides monkeys and arboreal animals will be fine if support stays long enough with even just an ocelot, peccary, mara and rhea covering most holes in the SA roster.
But im affraid without mods the arboreal side of things will never be fixed just by the sheer amount of missing animals.
And before you think "sheesh, 8-12 monkeys, are you insane? Wouldnt they be way to similar?" Let me give you a look what thag could actually mean.

1. White Faced Capuchin aka the one we have in the game

2. A Squirrel Monkey as a second general small monkey

3. White Faced Sake for its unique somewhat ugly look and upper medium size

4. Black Howler with its large Size and Chorus

5. A spider monkey as a medium sized monkey with an unique grabbing tail
Download.jpeg-60.jpg

6. A night monkey for nocturnal houses
images.jpeg-38.jpg

7. Golden Lion Tamarin as a small dot if color
images.jpeg-37.jpg

8. Cotton Top Tamarin as a second small and very distinct looking option

9. Emperor Tamarin as a third small and very unique looking option

10. Coppery Titi as a medium sized fluffy monkey

Idk about you, but that would be a monkey roster to be excited about.
It would leviate most of both south americas and primates problems in relevanz in the roster, but like i said i doubt we will ever have more then 4 south american primates.
Im honest im also more then cool with a second capuchin or the red howler as clones, as any kind of monkey bloat would be very appreciated.
