No Single Player offline Mode then?

wow...I wonder how many people back this game just for Offline mode?

Elite Dangerous is online game and require to update and receive data from server. How is it possible to turn this game into Offline game? Offline server install on client? But it will sound like a different game.

There is absolutely no way I'm going to miss the Twitch stream on the 22nd now. Excuse me while I go sort out sufficient popcorn and beer for the event.

This would be fine, but it may be more cut down than they are willing to accept as a product.

Frontier seem both proud and protective of their baby. I think the reluctance to let us use an "army painter" colour picker on the paint jobs is that they think we would paint them pink, black and other shades that would mess with their chosen aesthetics.

I can totally understand that, and not willing to offer an off-line torso version of the game. Whether it's the "correct" approach has no full answer, but they are the ones who make the call.

Those who have no use for a game that requires an internet connection should seek a refund. I hope there won't be many, but some only have free time when working on an oil rig, I suppose.

You'd be surprised how many people have no ready access to the internet at all times, for whatever reason (which are all valid.). Making purchases based on that purchase being always available for play makes perfect sense. I don't buy all games with offline as a requirement, as I don't see myself playing them when hospitalized. I like the slow and ponderous games that allow me to make my own decisions for those times. Civ, Tropico, Beyond Earth and I was looking forward to add Elite to that list because it isn't a 4X but still allows to play at as relaxed as I would a 4X.

And I am fine with the warning that the off line would be a severely neutered shadow of the off line game. I just wanted to fly a spaceship around and seeing the sights kinda for when I'm hooked up to machinery in a room that stops being interesting within 10minutes. Elite was the perfect new game. But I can still play it when not hospitalized and what there is I like. I even enjoy the Beta, which already has more than I ask for in a game called 'Elite'.

But the hammerdrop was on the off-line component and not for the chance to interact with grown men playing make belief pirates.

Lol! I'm sorry I didn't get a ticket for the event now, just to see the amount of heckling and people being removed by security. :D
.
*Edit* All this offline hoo-har also eclipses all of the other missing features from the release doesn't it? Way to bury bad news FDev! :)

The problem here is that you'd have access to the server which isn't something we'd want to allow as it contains the secrets of the galaxy. Which was also an issue with an online version.

Michael

Here's a question though Michael. Since some people where looking forward to an offline mode and pledged money for this, wouldn't a compromise be to (somewhere down the line) provide a scaled down version the server software with a static universe and as few secrets as possible included? I'm quite sure this would seem fair by most backers and would also put to rest any worries about the game being useless if/when the main servers goes offline.

Speaking for myself, I don't mind this one way or another as my PC is permanently online (well, unless there's a network outage)

Sadly there goes my xmas present for my dad, I was planning on buying him a copy of Elite for xmas, he upgraded his PC recently and could now run it, the problem is he has no home internet access (nor wants one). The game now won't work for him. I can't say I'm really happy about that tbh.

I think there really needs to be a dedicated section in the next newsletter around the offline issue and not simply moving on/business as usual mode. Yes, the game is looking fantastic and its incredibly exciting, but a large section of the pledging community are at risk of being seriously alienated by this move.

A lot also want the offline mode as a safeguard for the future, because when the servers are shut down eventually, without an offline mode the game is gone. I played Freelancer again recently. The multiplayer meta-server has gone off the net long ago (you can connect directly with individual servers with some workarounds, though), but my singleplayer experience was entirely unaffected by this.

Now, 30 years after the release of the first Elite, it is still being played, FD even have it on their store page now to renew interest in it. With an always-online requirement in ED, it is very unlikely anyone will be able to play ED 30 years down the road.

How ironic that the original game will probably outlast it.

Well this sucks.

It was a major factor for some people to back it. Me, I wanted both -- sometimes I just wanted to take it at my own pace, explore and what not.

Now that is right out. I haven't time to spend online as much as others and that means I will be quite limited in being an explorer, which definitely is a major disappointment. No longer can I start over and try things from scratch, at my own pace.

Disappointed to see this major feature being taken away, can't help but wonder what is next. )c:

Holy cow! What??!!

Ok i really hope this is not a thing, not only did i drop a grand on a new 64bit PC because we were told it would require 64bits (but it seems to run in 32bits currently), but now i can't play my SP only Elite, like i always have (elite, Frontier and FFE)?

Maybe this is just a mix up, pressure to release problems etc? I have no problem with like maybe ONE initial connection, to verify authenticity etc (like in Minecraft, or Crusader Kings II etc). But it just won't work at my end if i need to be connected at random times. My Pc's (accept this cheap laptop) don't do constant online connection.

Please for the love of all things good left in this cruel world don't FORCE online play where it is not wanted.

Keep Single Player mode entirely separate (not possible to move commanders between MP and SP), just have ONE connection on first start up, but don't force MP on us all. Please.

This is definitely a deal breaker if true.

Hmmmm. Business opportunity. I'll be standing outside Duxford on the hard shoulder of the M11 with a gross of flaming torches and pitchforks next Friday. First come, first served. (I expect they'll sell faster than progenitor cells :D )

...And if the connection required is just to login once per game start-up and to update ones galaxy every few hours (?) isn't that a doable form of offline/SP?...
No. Any transaction will need server validation. Even something like dropping ore into a refinery module.
Connection will need to be omnipresent.

At least with the publicity FD will get from this debacle there will likely be very poor after release sales, meaning the pressure on the servers will be manageable. Maybe they will be able to keep them going for most of the time - until switch-off.

Braben and the FD team really need to sit down and seriously discuss this again. There is a solution to this that everyone would be happy with, even if it was a stripped down version. The last thing FD need right now is to hand back money in refunds :(

And there should be a separate poll thread on this.

I know for sure that it will now. I still play the Sinclair zx48 version with a Sinclair emulator that was written 16 years ago... And if it will be possible, I will still play Elite on that emulator when this game is dead and forgotten.

I've heard of a ZX80 and ZX81. ZX48? Sounds cool, tell me more.

Developers of the ED community. Get ready, we are going to be looking to you to make player hosted server application, unless FD has plans to do that, which hasn't been indicated.

The core game is great, but for offline players, we may just have to make it work ourselves.

I do wonder, however, what kind of resources are needed to host a galaxy on a server?
