0.042% of the Galaxy has been explored, but we don't know anything about a third of it.

I know it must exist but its quite well hidden on the EDSM site and via Google. How do yo do this, more importantly can it be done automatically. I joined EDSM 3/4 months ago fully expecting that by using my cmdr name I would automagically be adding to the pot of info but nothing happened and my EDSM profile is as blank as the day I joined.
The part where you quoted Mooing ("…. Is it too much of a hassle to download an external application, or import the journals manually?") contained the answer to your question. A missing part of it too: you don't necessarily need to use a third-party program, you can upload your finds manually on the EDSM site as well. Right under the user menu (top right, click the CMDR icon), there's a part called "Import Journal".

If you want it done automatically, you'll need to use a third-party app of course.

Personally, I do use some of ED Discovery program, but I'm no technical wizard and have not linked it to anything but the game. Tried to set it up to post but then I ran into a problem with the linking stuff and couldn't figure how to make it work. If the third party programs are not user friendly to us technological idiots out here, then we probably won't use them, or in my case, use them to the full extent.

I am no great explorer by any stretch, but have been documenting all my first discoveries, and have only recorded just over 90k so far, but am still in the black and looking around.

I still find new stuff and keep looking for more. Recently came across my first Rocky world that was not a moon. Didn't think they existed, have seen Ice worlds and Rocky Ice worlds, but never a rocky world.

Please excuse my language its meant to be a pleae for help, if it comes across as anything else then its not meant to...

<no rant>I am confused, I would like to add my data to the collective pool of knowledge but I would like it to happen automatically. I am a member of EDSM and I have logged in via my Elite dangerous account. Now, thanks to this thread I have also downloaded the tool EDDiscovery and it has downloaded a data dump to my machine from - I assume EDSM. It (EDDiscovery) has also somehow got my flight log/activity data from Elite Dangerous, it does not however seem to then push that data (flight log etc) back to EDSM, so on the image below every "My...." link resolves in a page with zero or blank stats</no rant>

Thanks all.

Thanks all.
Did you give EDDiscovery your API key (3rd option in that menu ^^^)? It can't upload without that - check the EDDiscovery docs for where to put it.

I find the best place to check for correct uploads in the 'My flight log' page. I seem to recall EDSM does lots of number crunching to build the stats, so they can be out of date for a while, but it should show the systems you have been through (especially if you do that in the game - replaying the old journals is lower priority).

ok Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It’s throwing api key errors now, not sure why but at least I have a direction. My Cmdr name was recently changed due to a bug, stupidly I had used $$ in the name and Frontier dev used $$ as an identifier so my name broke stuff. Anyhow I will get to the bottom of it.

All the best

Try https://github.com/EDDiscovery/EDDiscovery/wiki/EDSM-Integration-with-EDDiscovery for the EDSM/EDD documentation from our side.

If you hit any problems we have a dedicated thread on these forums and a Discord page (both linked from the Help menu in the app), Discord will probably see the faster response but forum thread and git hub issues will get answers quicker than tangential threads although so long as they're in this subforum I will usually pop up :D

Looking at the instructions I am hopeful it will be user name related. I am away from my machine now but thank you for the help.

Same. I didn't start using EDSM until I signed up here a month ago, and even then I barely "use" it really. I dumped all my backlogged journals (about 80 of them) into it once I got to SAG A* and have been keeping bookmarks and screenshots of interesting things since so I at least have some actual idea of what I've found. Once I finally get back to the bubble I'll just do that again. I have no tech savvy.

Very old (and ignored) Suggestion of mine :

What if....

...you could Rep up with UC just like with any SuperPower and gain access to special Services. Such as
  • you dock at any UC Installation and can access their Galactic Database
  • attain powerful Statistics and see anything UC was ever sold
  • attain System Map Data for anything UC owns (for a price)
  • use their Galactic Observatory and Sims, where you can apply powerful filters and tools to any Exploration problem or question you might ever have (Galactic Stellarium)

Imagine that, UC as a full Service Provider to veteran Explorers, allowing them access to all available Information.

However, the idea obviously never took off. I guess because it would have made sense and wouldn't have spawned all those 3rd Party Tools ELITE is so daringly relying on, requiring complex APIs to build huge Databases that are all privately maintained.

Thank you all for the help, all fixed and I believe working. Hopefully now what little stumbling around the galaxy I do will at least go into a melting pot where others more able than I can interpret the data. Just now starting my return journey from Beagle Point to Sol via Colonia it will probably take me around a year and I hope to find some interesting stuff.

I think that exploration in ED is a special case. Because, in a "social" game like ED, exploration is rather anti-social by design. So it's quite understandable, in order to break the anti-social monotony, or to have any social aspect to exploration at all (like showing off the weird things you might find to other people), that explorers are much more likely to go to the forums and/or use third party tools.

The ED:EDSM ratio of about 3:1 is what I would expect.
For just travelling around the bubble, the ratio between "hyperspace jumps" and "hyperspace jumps logged by third-party tools" is around 20:1 [1]
Out in Colonia, it's around 6:1 - more explorers, more experienced players - but still the substantial majority of activity is not logged (and Colonia itself, which is the system most visited by people passing through rather than resident, has a ratio more like 8:1 or 9:1 ... so that might be a reasonable proxy for "explorers")

For a "visited stars" ratio of course it helps that a system only needs to be logged once regardless of how many unlogged visits it has, which is especially beneficial for the more heavily explored areas. Nevertheless, I'm quite surprised about 3:1 (or as marx says, closer to 2:1 for recent exploration) based on the above ratios - it's still surprisingly good.

[1] And since it's likely that the players using third-party tools are more active on average than the ones who don't, the ratio of active players is likely even wider than 20:1
