1.3 and beyond... I didn't know and have a question.

Question regarding 1.3 and future updates. I was not in the "know" about this game in 1984. I was buried with a full time job by day to pay for college that I attended at night. When this ED reincarnation came about, I had no point of reference regarding its origin, let alone any thoughts of backing. This has me a bit bothered that 1.3 and future updates will always be first available to the founders, even though I have seen the light. I purchased my copy on Dec. 27, 2014, after stumbling across some early press.

I completely understand that the founders backing, thank you btw, should be enshrined for there contributions to make this game possible. Though now I find myself in a precarious position of suggesting that future updates should be open to all as they become available. I could be all wet here, and totally off-base, but these are the thoughts I am having. No disrespect to anyone, just sharing out loud.

Future updates are open to all. Some will be free. Some will be paid. Some early backers paid extra to get all the future paid contents. You are not missing anything. You get everything at the same time as everyone else, apart from those that do beta testing, but that happens on different servers, so does not affect your galaxy.

1.3 (just as 1.1 and 1.2) is a general content update, freely available to everyone, no costs involved, an no exclusives granted to anyone. (other than beta testing access for founders for a brief period, and on a dedicated test server).

Edit: Also, ninja'd...

Since 1.2 game performance is lower and there is lag 75% of the time when other players are in the system, maybe the devs will add some cool stuff at some point but I would say the game has gone off the boil and they are working on something else.

To reformulate what has been said : future updates will be available to everyone. Think of them as "patches". They're still patching the games, everyone will benefit from it.

Backers do get to participate in the one week beta test for the bigger updates (1.1 ; 1.2 ; 1.3...). I reckon non-backers could "buy" that beta test access, too. Not sure about that. It's only a week, anyway.

Then, in a year or so, there should be expansions. Big DLC, if you will. So far, one should be planetary landing, the other should be FPS/EVA mode. Those will be paid expansions. Available to everyone, simply not for free. Except for some backers, that got a lifetime access to everything, for free.

This is blatantly untrue. If you're experiencing lag, you're likely in a starter system as the recent influx of Steam players has made these instances quite crowded. I've seen no lag recently from the Orion Nebula and back through populated space beyond very busy areas.

Performance has never been better for me, and I had horrendous issues all the way up to 1.0+. With the the largest content update ever, only a couple of months from the 1.2 update, how can you say the devs have "gone off the boil". Nonsense.

That is a strange thing to say Dandare71, with updates flowing in regularly and design plans freely available on the forum archives. True, Frontier have other projects going on as well, but so far nothing has indicated that the attention to ED has somehow dwindled. On the contrary, things are getting better and better by the week!

About the lag - I haven't noticed any so far, might this be connected to your ISP somehow? Anyway, this is not the right thread to discuss that....

TBH I do not mind if Backers and Beta players get to use the update before me. Hay they paid their money and took the time to test the game when it worked. I am more than happy to wait an extra week or so for the update, and with the knowledge the backers and beta player post on the forum, I will be able to enjoy the game when it comes.

The new ships will be nice, even if Frontier Developments make them so over priced nobody will buy them.

All I say is this, just remember if there is a problem and their systems crash due to the game none of us will suffer the same fate. I agree that a fully open test server would be nice, just like some other games we know, but for FD to develop the game without giving us all the latest details this will never happen.

I have to agree that your statement is not exactly true. Yes there is game lag, and you do not need to be in a starter system to notice it. When Ver 1.2 first came out if ran really smooth on my system, but then after every small patch things got worse. I have a really good system which runs all high end games without lag or glitching, well except for Elite. I know its something within the game but it dose not matter where I am when in game. Its actually worse when I am in a combat zone with 2 capital ships than it is in any starter system (and I am not talking about the sound lag issues).

All I do for Elite if over clock my graphics card and play 95% lag free.

Things to look out for when hit by lag.

1, does your hard drive light (red light) come on?
2, are you running on a system which has a quad core processor (and higher) i5/i7 Amd3 quad core and higher?
3, do you have other programmes running at the same time as Elite. Remember the more programmes running the slower your system runs.

I know its a little off topic, mod will slap my wrist, but people do need to tell the truth a little more, no offence meant.

As for the game and updates why don't we just be happy they are coming.

There's a bit of stutter when first loading the base textures I have found, common with many games these days. Doubt its Frontier's fault, most likely driver / card related. I'm running a nicely tuned box, SSD, R290x 4gig, i5 3570k at 4.2 on water with 16mb system mem. Once the first few visited stations/systems load, I have no issues with stutter/lag after that.

Back on topic, I guess I'm comparing the beta testing prior to the global release. I can "opt-in" for many pre-release candidates these days, and would like the opportunity to do so for ED.

Absolute tosh; I donated £200 and just happened to recieve the game and all major expansions for free :D
It is usually me that is the pedant! And that will go way over most people's heads. But you are right. Well, apart from the spelling, anyway. :) :(

There has been talk of that. FD said they would look into it ( = do nothing and hope everyone forgot). They are not going to do it for free, because some people donated large amounts of folding green things to perhaps get the opportunity to do the beta testing, and others paid for the privilege (smsKONG: note the difference between KS backers and later pre-release backers). Some would riot if noobs were allowed to beta test for free. Whilst FD have enough people to beta test it cannot be a priority, and the complaints from some if they announced a fee would probably outdo the benefit of a modest bit of income. They are between a rock and a hard place.

Not only can I see zero justification for that statement, but much to support the complete opposite. Work on patches and added features has been demonstrably constant since the December release, with a major update about to be revealed. ED is Frontier Developments' big project and the poster child for the Cobra Engine. Mac support is happening now, the Steam release has happened, and console support is coming. At the very least there will be two major version upgrades over the next 2-3 years. Why on earth would they be working on "something else"?

...the founders backing, thank you btw...

And thank you for reminding me of something I'd really lost sight of. But for the 'kick-backers' (tm) we'd none of us be playing this most excellent adventure.

So, +1 to the OP, and a nod of approval to all the kickbackers.

:D

Receive ;)

I've relied on predictive text for too long now and can only spell with assistance!

As for the money and expansions - I missed the KS boat but was happy to cough up for alpha. Anyway you kook at it though, money was payed for a promised set of goods/services - nothing was free!
So I was actually agreeing with you via the art of sarcasm not picking via pedantry :p
