Completely agree with the op, it seems a bit over the top considering the ship's other computer functions are enabling you to fly many, many times faster than the speed of light, and yet it can't park?

I think it would have made more sense if there was a computer bank for different hardware/software modules such as a docking computer, navigation, market analyser, targeting for turret/gimbal weapons, etc. all of which would be overseen by a core AI. I'd love to see the differences too between AIs from the Empire and the Federation.

Assume the comp is light (with shielding) but that your ship is required to have various senors/etc added to facilitate the landing in conjunction with the computer.

While I would definitely prefer to be able to fit a docking computer into my ship without using up an internal slot. That is the mechanic of the game.
