Yes perhaps pay-to-win was wrong - but - you can be at a huge advantage to other players if you have the best ship and all that comes with it.

I take your point there is no 'winning' as such - but you could say reaching Elite status is a form of winning - its like reaching level 90 in WOW. Where do you go after you are Elite?

All I'm saying is that the game will be longer and more satisfying if ships and equipment are bought in game with credits that are earned in game rather than bought. And when new players join they are not constantly killed off by those who have happened to have been able to afford to pay-for-advantage!

Another reason to be a confirmed solo-online player; which I've always planned to be...:)

I agree entirely with this sentiment. When will people understand that funding this activity is NOT good - games never used to be subject to this reliance on microtransactions and there truely is no need for it now...

When you say "games never used to be subject to this reliance on microtransactions and there truely is no need for it now" are you referring to single player games with no major online component that needs a constant revenue to support?

Or do you mean subscription based games?

Or do you mean Assassins Creed/FIFA/NHL 1,2,3,4,5,6,7......

Don't get me wrong. There are certainly plenty of games where this has gone waaaay out of hand and where it's plainly obvious that it's a money-grab. I just don't count ED as one of them.

The sales of the main game will help fund the expansions and the expansions will fund further expansions. The cosmetic purchases you can choose to make in ED is simply there to support the upkeep of the servers.

Pre- 2006 for example. Given the simplicity of skins, and the rate at which modders could and would knock out such content FOR FREE if given the chance, there is no justification for a single skin for a single ship costing this much. A wireframe pack for all ships - sure i'd buy that - but the nostalgia goggles are strong with this one...

Is this not the reason we play pc games as opposed to consoles???

so yes, its a cash grab.

Err.. No. Not the reason I play on the PC. My console is in the living room and the kids use it.

Instead I use the PC for which I never need to buy any new hardware or software upgrades or game updates or online subscriptions in order to play games. :p

Surely, the answer is to try and do it again - on another career path.

I can't see me doing it in a month of Sundays, but I can dream

Incidentally, I personally would have no objection to anyone buying credits. I'm very fortunate in that I'm retired (YEAH!) so I've plenty of time to do it the hard way, but I sympathise with those commanders who have only limited time to play. It would swell FD's coffers as well, reducing the risk of monthly subs.

Given that the E: D sandbox is roughly the size of Blackpool beach, the likelihood that they would significantly impair my game is *extremely* low, IMO.

If anything, they run the risk of losing out in the 'pure satisfaction' stakes.

When we get beta, do you think that they will surprise us by filling the hold with 30t of random cargo (I bet I get grain or scrap) or will they give us a starting amount of 30 credits (oops I mean 30k ). Am sure that they have thought of other surpriitems with the 30 in there

Which still is missing the point IMO.

You are not paying for the work involved for making the paintjob. The paint jobs and future cosmetic items are sold to support the ongoing cost of the servers instead of a subscription fee. If these where sold for a price that just payed for the job of creating them the whole process would serve no purpose. Same thing applies if modders was allowed to make them...

Could the price have been lower. Sure, but the real question is: Does it sell? My guess is that they are testing the waters with pricing around these things just like they are testing the actual game currently. If it doesn't sell well enough then we won't see these prices again. On the other hand, if it does sell then why shouldn't they continue? There is no absolute truth for value of goods...only what people are ready to pay for them.

Personally I haven't bought it yet BTW and I'm not sure I will either...

Complaining on a forum about things like this never really solves anything if people still buy the thing in question. Doesn't matter if it's a paintjob or a iPhone.

All people can do is to vote with their wallet.

Is this not the reason we play pc games as opposed to consoles???

I play PC games because I happen to have a powerful computer for other reason and therefore don't see a reason to buy a console...I can't speak for others...

a) I wasnt complaining - i was expressing my own viewpoint.
b) see a - thats EXACTLY what a public forum IS for. All the moreso if it provides a semi-direct route to the developers. Complaining on gamefaqs for example would be pointless.

So many people seem to forget this :/

Hmm,

I came here to find out about 10 days of surprises and I get a discussion on microtransactions.

Is that the surprise?

I know your reply was general and not exclusively targetting me, but I believe you get my jist.
