10 If Elite = Your Favourite Game --- 20 Rift CV1 is Must Have

Hi Folks,

If Elite is your absolute favourite game, I can say that it's a must for you to get an Oculus Rift.

Why did I post this. Because, if you love this game so much, the Rift will be a total game changer and will blow your mind. Elite is a great game --- Elite Rift CV1 is a different world.

If you can't afford a decent PC and the Rift and Elite is your personal game of the year / life, it's worth to save up the money and get the Rift (maybe then CV2 already) and a decent PC.

I don't get payed by Oculus or PC manufacturers, I'm just enjoying this game in a totally different way since I switched to the Rift like round about 2 months ago. I hope the game will improve as certain elements or in general, the gameplay is not that awesome after 1,5 years (it's getting boring, I'm missing an ingame storyline etc. etc.) but it has potential.

Greetings from

I dithered on this but I am going to hold off. It was an amazing experience having Played ED on the development kit model maybe 18 months but I wasn't impressed with the screen door effect I saw. I'm sure with Cv1 that's probably not so apparent now. All the same I will hold off and wait for the game to further mature, the device tech not to mention VR in the wider market in general. I'd only use it for ED at the moment and I can't justify that.

I've stopped playing Elite in VR. It's just to cumbersome having that      on your face for hours. And fighting the system map, fighting the galaxy map, noticing graphical glithces, yaddi yadda. Meh.
I enjoy it more on a 24" VA monitor. Ah the nice colors..

I'm owning a Rift CV1 and can only agree with OP. I think the game was great before I had the Rift but it was a whole new experience when I put my Rift on and played the game with it for the first time. And now, one month later, I have a hard time going back playing without the Rift.
The most obvious difference is the sense of scale you get. Flying by a planet watching up on it through your cockpit is a really impressive feeling. Or zooming through a canyon on the surface of a planet and you get this extra feeling of how close you are to the bottom or the sides.

I played E D last year on a DK2 and was amazed but disappointed by the gfx. But with the CV1, the GFX was even better than expected. It's great.

Recent CV1 buyer here.

Completely agree with OP, all friends and relatives (aged 7 to whatever) who have tried it also completely jaw-droppingly amazed.

+1

Aye gotta say similas for me.

While I kinda agree about the VR experience, for me VR isn't a replacenment for monitor play.

ED is just one of those games with travel and other "nowt happening" periods, and as a result I'll usually have a browser open as well or have the tv on, that's not happening in VR.

I do stick the headset on now and again though, but it'll be when doing something specific like combat or something.

Haz Res's are totally great in VR with all the asteroids floating about, I use VR just for stuff like this, most of my ED time is on monitor though.

OP, I still wonder how you control your ship in VR.
Is there an alternative to voice controls?

Yeah, maybe Gen2 or even 3 will be good enough. Current gen is a bit disappointing (for me anyway), but that's gen1 for yah!

M8 has one which he claims cost over two grand...that with the VR ready pc too. Lets not forget that little tiny upgrade needed...curses that mortgage and stack of bills and the fact I'm skint in my old age. if only we didn't need food and water and things like a roof over our heads...things would be so much easier in life and we could have all the nice things :D

In all seriousness though, from what I've seen of VR, I would seriously love to have it but...see above and minus the sarcasm ^^

I use the Saitek X52 Pro Joystick. Everything is working flawlessly. I use the keyboard as well. I can write without the need to look on the keyboard. So that's also no problem.

I don't use voice control. The Joystick covers 95% of the functions that I need. Just the Galaxy map is a bit tricky and I use a combination of mouse and Joystick.

I saw the DK2 last year and played VR for the first time as well. But I knew that I had to have the CV1 as soon as it's available. But I had round about 1 year to save a bit more for the PC and Rift. Planning was the key. : )

I know for a fact that I wouldn't still be playing ED if it wasn't for the VR support. It's currently my favourite thing to do in VR. After you have set up the galaxy map to work correctly with the HOTAS, the whole experience rarely requires you to take the rift off your face or lift your hands away from the joystick. I'm only using a DK2 on a GTX970, it's smooth on VR Low graphics setting and occasionally stutters on VR High setting, although I only need to make 75 fps. If you are getting a CV1 then yes, I recommend getting a GTX980 or better.

It's the ultimate in escapism. The only other games I have with this level of immersion are Project cars and Assetto Corsa and on both of them the between race menu is really immersion breaking. With ED its all pretty seamless apart from the GalaxyMap which in my opinion really should be on a monitor that extends over from around the chair.

most of us fly with a hotas....just like the pilot in game does.....with hands on the stick and throttle and a vr headset on...well you will feel in the game....as you are mimicking the pilot.....

no one is doing this the 90s way with a keyboard and mouse are they?.......fly like the pilot does.

I only play ED in VR. I have both the Rift and Vive, and both are just as immersive for those people considering either one. I use the Rift primarily in the seated position for ED, as the Vive is all configured for room-scale titles nowadays.

Despite the fact that some functions like the Galaxy Map are a bit cumbersome in VR (I want a virtual keyboard in there FD!), the fact that you're put in the cockpit the feeling of presence is at the forefront of the experience.

VoiceAttack can be useful too, but I manage every ship function using a Saitek X52 without problems. The layout of that hardware matches what the pilot hands in VR do, which is awesome to see.

So I agree, and urge others to invest in the hardware if they can justify it. For those waiting for later editions of VR kit, this won't happen other than ergonomics for a couple of years yet. The design of the current generation is cutting edge, and more pixels that may offer a wider FOV are reliant on matching GFX cards that'll handle that, and ED struggles still with FPS drops on planets and stations trying to maintain 90 frames now. Let alone getting better Fresnel lenses (to limit god-rays), and panel sizes to name a few more requirements.

I'm happy with current VR technology and can only look forward to eventual future advances, at which I'll be at the front of the queue. VR to me is a game changer in terms of immersion, and ED was the first title I tried on a DK1 (demoed by FD's Adam Woods at the Tobacco Road BAFTAs 2014) and I've not played it any other way.

I had a GXT760 and recently upgraded to a GTX1060 so that I have a VR capable machine. However the current price of both the OR and the Vive are prohibitive. I am in the fortunate position that I can afford them... I just don't want to as it just feels like too much of a luxury purchase for the price.

My current plan is to wait till the end of the year and see if we get some 2nd generation versions and to see if the price comes down at all. But it will be a Vive, not a Rift.
