8. ELITE (BBC Micro | 1984)
Never played David Braben and Ian Bell’s seminal space-trading simulation? If you’ve played a Grand Theft Auto game, you should probably thank them. Elite expanded the potential of computer gaming with its real-time 3D graphics and massive, procedurally-generated universe. Never mind that umpteen future space sims borrowed directly from Elite’s template; you could argue that the open-world genre has its roots here, too. A new Elite is headed to PCs later this year.
