100 Billions stars systems

This is because you could chose to define a star system in two ways I guess. As Cody pointed out above many stars have one or several companions. If you define the system as this group of stars then the galaxy consists of approximately 100 Billion star systems.

If you however chose to define each individual star as it's own system (since every star can potentially have their own planets orbiting) then the number would be approximately 400 Billion.

Well by its proper definition a star system (or stellar system) is a small number of stars which orbit each other while planetary system would be the term for non-stellar objects in orbit around a star or star system.

(Go look at a map of the Firefly 'universe' if you want to see how quickly this can get real complicated. :p Been a while since I had a look at it but from memory it consists of a single star system, which consists of something like five star systems and ten or so planetary systems.)

In everyday language people use star system when talking about what's really planetary systems though... Well, OK, in regular everyday language solar system is often used, which is even worse considering that's technically only Sol and what orbits it.

That is why I said it depends on what people mean with "system". People often confuse these terms, which is why I made the post in the first place. ;)

So that mean that all ships will travel like Carriers and motherships do in EVE, enough fuel in my cargo to cover X amount of sustem ?
Similar, although understand Elite is its own game and the analogy falls down a bit. Basically, ships have a hyperdrive and a Frame Shift Drive.

The hyperdrive allows you to jump instantaneously to large interstellar bodies (i.e. stars), fuel permitting.
There's no such thing as jump points or jump gates in Elite, so you can enter hyperspace wherever you like (with some caveats).

The FSD is for travelling around systems and works a little like EvE's warp drive, except that it's 100% freeform (i.e. go wherever you want, not just between pre-determined points).

vvv 400 billion stars, 100 billion star systems. Some systems have more than one star in them. vvv

The chances of seeing players will get lower the further you get away from the core systems until eventually it will be tiny. There will be 400 billion stars, with 100 billion having planets I think. Realisticly only a small percentage of that will EVER be visited because theres so many :p
