18 months away - view from a returning player

There's definitely been improvements here and there. Curious to know, as someone who hasn't been here the whole time, do you feel like the improvements you've seen justify the time it's taken to add them? What I mean is do you feel like there is year or two years worth of improvements been made? Or do you feel like for as long as you've been away more could have been done?

Really curious to get some perspective from someone who hasn't been sat here "waiting for the pot to boil" so to speak.

Those who wait will always complain time passing more slowly.

It's a rule of nature.

So I've been back in the bubble for a couple of weeks now since my failed journey to the core...I posted about that a while ago so I won't go into it here but lets just say there is an AspX sized crater on a metalic planet 2000ly from SagA :(

You have left a trace in the history of the galaxy. This is the most important

:)

That is a good question and my list isn't definitive....just stuff I noticed.

Another poster added a bunch more stuff that's been added and if you listed every single change in that time I'm sure it would be a fairly long list.....lots of 'oh yeah...forgot about that' moments.

To answer properly requires me to have an opinion on dev time and how it's spent and whether these things could have been done quicker / better / more efficiently...I can't really say but ED does feel different...is it 18 months worth of work, yes and no.....it's not radically different but it is better, a lot better and that's the main thing.

Many of these changes I noticed I've been asking for since premium beta and some should have been in the game at launch but weren't. Back then the game was bland, very little personality, it felt lifeless and flat. These new changes have brought some life to the galaxy, made it more personal, more involved....can I say ship names and customisation (not sure why it didn't make my list)...that fairly small addition makes such a difference to me.

Each thing in and of itself is small but add them all up and well....you notice. I remember seeing holo-me and thinking meh, same with ship naming, seemed small, should have been there from the start kinda thing, same with many of these additions...take them as a whole and you notice.

The big mechanics however haven't changed much, the professions haven't changed much, there are still lots of bugs / placeholder / nonsense mechanics etc... that's what I'm hoping Beyond will address.

One of the things I've found with the engineers is NOT to grind for materials.

By all means have a look every now and then, and if you see something rare by all means scoop it up, but the mistakes a lot of players do is "I must find XXXX for an upgrade" and then come on the forums and whine that they've spent Y number of hours looking for Z

Anyway.. since you're back, how about a little trip to the pleiades and do some alien related stuff.....

TBH I thought about exactly this a month or so ago - somehow found myself on a E : D page which listed all the updates since launch, and dates, and what was included. Was quite interesting going back through it - it seemed to me that at first there were alot of major changes bundled together, then over time the 'mass' or 'weight' or 'postive effect on gameplay' of these updates seemed to dwindle as you looked through them. In effect they seemed to look less worthwhile and less jammy goodness crammed into them. Then you look back and think, 'my goodness it's been how many years since Beta, and look at what they have done since then!' Then I sigh as it doesn't actually seem alot considering lol. But then I may be coming from an angle of 'company x can make amazing game y from (possibly) scratch in the same amount of years, so have we seen what I can only think of as a comparible effort/improvement etc (difficult as apples and oranges but my head goes down strange paths like this on occasion). Anyways, my basic conclusion based on non scientific gut feel, was that overall, many improvements from launch, but considering the amount of time, I would think we should have seen more by now to meet the vision* (tm)

This is a ramble I admit, but if you can, find the Elite advert page (buy me now type thing) and look through all the updates over time and what the included - see if you agree or not with my rambling :)

* whatever that may be, Mr.B's, documented design goals, your dreams etc

Good to read that generally positive overview of what has changed since you were last in the bubble.
Im giving this post 7/10 Flimley points.

So without wanting to white knight there were a couple of other things that didn't make my list that should have.

  • Ship names and customisation - long overdue IMO but it definitely feels more personal to have your ship name on the side. I do think it was a bit cheeky of FDev to introduce this then make you pay to have the name on the side but I'm sure they earned well off it.
  • Ship transfers - when I first saw this feature I thought, meh, but I've now used it a few times and it makes such a difference. When I find a new system I want to base myself in for a while I just transfer over the relevant ships and I'm good.
  • Mid mission time bonus - needs some work still, especially the alternate destination offer, I'm in the toaster rack about to dock and ping...want you to fly 30ly and 20,000 ls cruise for 30k cr...erm no but I do like the time bonus. It just needs to scale with the mission and it will make more sense.

Anyway I wanted to lighten this thread after the last post which was a bit gloomy....and I do get it...that's why I left the game for a prolonged period.

Cheers
