1920x1200?

Quick and easy question - does Alpha 4.0 support 1920x1200 resolution properly? Playing it in the Alpha 1.1 combat missions, setting that as the resolution causes parts of the cockpit to be cut off for me. If not, will it be implemented in the final release?

Yes it supports it. Curently, the Starmap doesn't display properly - the edges are missing but the rest of the game runs beautifully in fullscreen.

Not long to wait now :D

Do you suffer with a lower FOV with it than with a regular 16:9 (1920x1080) monitor, like most games? ie: You can see less left & right, when infact logic should dictate you should see the same left and right, but even more up and down!

I usually set the FoV to be quite wide as it bugs me when you turn hard / throttle up or down that you can't see scanner at the bottom of the screen (I don't have TrackIR or an easily accessible control mapped to freelook)

I can't comment accurately on the FoV as I've hardly played the game in 1920x1080. It plonks black banners at the top and the bottom of the screen in fullscreen and looks a bit naff. I have played it across 3 monitors (@ 5760x1080 - 2 1920x1200 + 1 1920x1080) but I think I need a bit more graphics grunt to do that full time (1 x HD7870 currently)

Just a symptom..

How would it possible to leave out support for 16:10 in the game man?...:D

Easy, he suffers from what I like to call "badconsoleport-itis". A disease where you find yourself playing a game clearly designed for consoles in mind whose developers refuse to support 16:10 and other basic features of having a PC.. This disease often leaves one weary of any so called "PC" game, particularly if they don't support 16:10..

Fortunately FD do not seem to suffer from it so I think we will be OK. :D

The problem is with a lot of games is you get a better horizontal FOV with a 16:9 monitor than a 16:10 monitor. eg:-

The only way around this is to play the game in 1920x1080 instead of 1920x1200, so you end up with this:-

So does elite suffer from this? Be far batter if a 1920x1200 monitor gave you the same horizontal FOV as a 1920x1080 monitor and a better vertical FOV!

Can someone with a 1920x1200 monitor flick between 1920x1200 & 1920x1080 resolution and comment? (Ideally you'll need 1:1 pixel mapping enabled)

As has been said, Alpha 1.1 doesn't deal with 16:10 resolutions correctly. This has been a major annoyance for me since my main monitor doesn't support any 16:9 resolutions at all - just 2560x1600 and 1280x800.

And the current AMD drivers won't scale from 1920x1080 to 2560x1600 when there is more than one monitor attached to the system, so I had to disconnect two of my three screens to get Alpha 1.1 working correctly.

But it's an early Alpha build we're running, so issues like this is are be expected.

Back when I used to game on 4:3 and 5:4 displays I thought that having a 16:9 display would give me a wider field of view. What I've found is that it usually feels more like I've lost vertical space rather than gained horizontal space.

I left out 16:10 because I just don't like them, which is odd since as that is so close to the "golden ratio" it should be more appealing.

Anything down to 1:1 (and up to $large:1) will be supported without black bars, and will always give you the default 16:9 view with either the vertical or horizontal FOV extended to make use of the extra screen space.
This is now fixed in our trunk build, but Alpha 4.x is coming from a branch that may not get it.

You, Sir, are my hero. I am a great fan of 16:10 screens and currently running the game in a window at 16:9 format, looking forward to full screen.:D

I was only supposed to be fixing it as far as 16:10 support. I may have been biased by the fact that I have a 5:4 at home.

Doing the universal solution is definitely a good choice, otherwise we'd prediocally have threads how FOV/galaxy map/etc. is weird on some screen (or combination thereof) with an unforeseen aspect ratio.:D

I'd hope a 1920x1200 monitor would display MORE FOV (vertically) than a 1920x1080. Chance are though, it will be the same vertically and you'll see LESS horizontally :(

I'm a 1610er as well (can't stand 16:9 - it's fine for watching films, but much prefer 16:10 for general computer usage) and I would have the same hope, but would be happy as long as nothing is missing off the edges that we need... like it is in the current galaxy map.

In cockpit, when you run it in 1920x1200 and 1920x1080, do you get the tradtional FOV issues? ie: They view shows the same vertical FOV, but the 1920x1080 actually shows MORE horizontally?

Well, it seems like the problem's been fixed properly, which is nothing less than I would expect from FD.

Now we just need to wait for the threads complaining that those with wider/taller screens have an unfair advantage because they can see further in the x/y direction :p

Properly fixed meaning in 1920x1200 vs 1920x1080 you see the same horizontal FOV in the cockpit, but more vertically in 16:10?

If so! EXCELLENT!

Please read Ben Parry's post above again. He already said that the default aspect ratio is 16:9 and, whenever you screen exceed this in one dimension, you gain visibility in that direction.

In other words, 16:10 screen will get a higher vertical FOV than 16:9, and the same FOV horizontally.
