If I buy my own Sidewinder, does the insurance cover anything outfitted on it, if not is there any benefit to buying your own as opposed to the one that is loaned ?

Or should I just buy an Eagle ?

Ta muchly.

There is no point in buying a Sidewinder if you already have one. Only the equipment on it is loaned, which means you can't make a big profit from flogging off the bits you aren't using.

It all depends what you want to do in the game. If you want to start out fighting then the eagle or viper is the obvious choice. If you want to do some mining / trading go for the hauler. My route so far has taken me sidewinder / hauler / cobra / type 6 and now asp.

Actually, don't buy an Eagle now unless you're dead set on doing combat and combat only. Save some more,
ignore the Hauler and get an Adder. That gives you all the possibilities in a nice package.

I did ALOT of trade missions in my Sidewinder, pretty much exclusively. I upgraded it a little bit for cargo and FSD for longer jumps, if you don't choose to keep the Sidewinder when you buy a new ship the upgrades are deducted from the new purchase. When my ship was destroyed I got to pick and choose some of the upgrades that we're on the insurance cover so I elected to drop some items to save some money. I was at about 250,000 then. Eventually I saved up enough for a Cobra MKIII and that's what I have now, lore says they are produced in Lave, although I don't know if they give a discount there. I really wanted to buy other ships but I just kept saving because I felt the Cobra was reasonably priced for it's statistics. It doesn't seem as zippy as the sidewinder but I managed to upgrade it's cargo capacity to 40 today which helps massively. I just fill up with extra goods the next station needs imported aside from my trade mission goods and sell it when I get there.

Don't forget to keep enough money for insurance, I got cocky and boosted into the station entrance by accident yesterday. Insurance on my Sidewinder was about 3,600 it's 32,000+ on the Cobra and it's gas cost are higher too. Save for what you want ... the ASP looks really good, I wonder if I could have waited long enough to go from Sidewinder to Asp.

If you are interested in multiple roles, I would strongly recommend an adder as a first step up from the sidewinder. It's the ugly little ship that could ;)

You can do a little of everything in that little sucker. It's the cheapest true multipurpose ship.

I agree with posters above - Adder is the first step up from the Sidey. It is maneuverable, reasonably fast, has three hardpoints, including one medium, can be outfitted, without many sacrifices, to have a 16-ton hold. Perfect first multipurpose ship. It will put you within reach of your first Cobra pretty fast.

I have to agree. I started with the sidey, doing missions in Potriti. Made about 200k then bought the adder. What a ship! Very nimble and when kitted out with 2 pulse lasers and a Multi Cannon, it rocks for Bounty Hunting. Used the Adder until I had over 1.5mill then bought the Cobra. Honestly, this is the way to go. And, you can kit it out for any role, BH/Trade/Exp, just however you want. I liked it so much, I kept it in case I get a little nostalgic and want to fly it again.
