2.1 Bookmarks will fall flat on it's face without folders

I watched the beta stream last night and was keen to see how bookmarks will be organised (below)

From what I can see there is no apparent way to organise your bookmarks, which is going to render the feature close to unusable.

I have (in a spreadsheet)

62 Black holes of interest
39 Earth likes with landable close orbiting moons
27 Planetary Nebula
5 Earth-likes with rings
7 Mining sites
3 Extreme Nebula sites
10 Potential Alien Bubbles
18 Super Giant systems
24 Miscellaneous Glitch systems (Such as Rings through moons)

There is more but I guess you get the idea.. From the Video (above) I cannot see any way to manage the bookmarks, I hope FD are looking into this otherwise the feature will be unusable. Scrolling though 1,000's of bookmarks really won't bring much to the table. Many people have already found a limit using sidewinders as bookmarks already and that only works in systems with a shipyard.

Could do with a 'folder' system and sorting a-z

Feedback on this would be great... Maybe Mr Brooks is already on the case?

Thoughts?

Thoughts .... yeah, a couple of them :)

First off, managing your own bookmarks. Since you know they can't be put in a category or folder, so limit yourself.
Second, it's an improvement on what we have now. Although folders/categories are definitely an improvement on that improvement.
Third, since we now have that feature, there might be upgrades to that feature to include what you propose. Before we had none.

So, I disagree it will fall flat on it's face. I'd call it of limited use. But you do make a good point it would benefit enormously from your proposal.

I... actually didn't think of it. But you are right, without some sort of filtering this could be a problem.

I understand the sentiment Ziggy and was expecting someone to bring it up.. however as it's beta and a quick easy win in terms of development, I thought I would take away the matches before the fire starts - so to speak. I welcome the feature but for little effort during beta it could be released to the general public in a better condition. :)

As a way to organize them more easily, if you have that many, maybe a naming scheme would be useful? Assuming they are organized alphabetically, you could prefix each bookmark with what category you want them to be sorted under, e.g. "blackhole_" or "nebula_".

Ohhh I see. Patch Politics. :)

Lobby on!

Even just being able to easily click an A-B-A travel route is an improvement on what we have now, so, no, it'll be much better than flat on its face.

I'm sure that stuff like folders of bookmarks will come along eventually.

Great idea, long lists suck. Personally I would like to see a select/de-select all button on all of these map entries (star type, government type, states etc) as it would reduce the amount of joystick actions I'm making quite a bit.

I am with Nutter on this.
Why go from the frustration of having no bookmarks to the frustration of having a clusterfudge of bookmarks ?
That is not an improvement, that's just shifting the frustration.
Get it right the first time around (for once, sorry), instead of settling for second best which then again has to be fixed in yet another upcoming patch.
The bread crumb trail is long enough as it is.

Are we sure that there is no way to organise bookmarks? I think you're basing your conclusions on the slimmest of evidence from a stream that was galloping from one feature to the next.

Good point to make, but it may already be covered in the beta version. If it's not then this thread will get very popular ;)

How do you know this change is easy or require little effort ?

You have a good idea, sure, and what you're saying is bookmarks in its current form will be useless to you (it would be fine for me though) and a way to organise them would be nice, but hyperbole (in the OP) and now speaking for FD ? ;)

EDIT:
Bah! Ninja'd by A_A

To be honest, my spreadsheet is more useful than the feature shown in it's current format, also a list over 50 rows long starts to irritate. Also if all the bookmarks are in one list then you could cause a performance issue. Collapsible folders would increase performance and make using bookmarks a pleasure! I think they mentioned collapsible list for outfitting which I very much look forward to :)

I'm a software product and development manager :) At most there is an hour's development - if that.. would not even need to change the database structure if you mark the folder structure in the same name field

I seem to remember that at one point Ed stressed that it was a development build and therefore not to be taken as the finished product. If collapsible lists is going to be in for outfitting, is it a stretch to think they may be in bookmarks by beta?
