2.2 - Did we peek at the Christmas Presents too early?

Hi Folks,

Got a bit of question for you all to consider. How much game play did we loose because 'xenohendge' was discovered?

I mean I am *seriously* impressed about the way that the new mystery was discovered, talk about out of the box thinking but consider this for a moment;-

1) If it wasn't for the trailer, we wouldn't even know that there were these 2001 like monoliths in the game (just like we never knew about the barnacles in 2.0) and people wouldn't have been looking. (Kind of using knowledge from breaking the fourth wall)
2) Frontier would have planned and plotted out circumstances and game play events, which would have eventually led people to the 'Xenohendge. All that work will be shelved and all that content will be lost. :(

I bet that some people at Frontier are feeling like a DM when the players find an exploit which ruins the game. (If you've ever played tabletop D&D, you'll know what I mean).

Maybe thinking of making this a discussion point on Lave Radio next week.

What do you folks think?

P.S. Still seriously impressed how it was found though. ;)

Does it really matter?

As you say, it was a fantastic (solo) effort from one person to take the available clues and use them to find the site.

As a (former) D&D GM I always took the players actions on a roll and adjusted the current play to re-fit the scenario that was being played out. You just had to be able to think on your feet!

Edit:
And the most memorable gameplay moments came from the unexpected player actions being taken and incorporated into the game flow on-the-fly :)

Keep in mind, this is the first trailer that was not CGI and actually used in-game footage. David Braben even mentioned in the 2.2 stream that employees were looking very closely at the trailer and suggested tweaks to avoid a spoiler. If anything, this quick discovery will make teasers and trailers even more scrutinized internally before release to the general public.

As a DM from way back including on several video games, I encountered metagaming all the time. You can't really stop it. A good DM rolls with the punches and learns from the experience, then builds on the scenario. I'm pretty certain this moved the timetable up on some things (like what to do with the scan data, new GalNet articles, deployment of military/research fleets, etc), but I suspect we're still weeks or months away from anything much bigger unless larger discoveries occur. In the end, we can only find what they've deployed in the galaxy.

Sheesh!
I went on Distant Worlds, then to Jaques, then I went on holiday, then Beta-tested, now I'm back mining at Jaques, and it seems that I've missed EVERYTHING... AGAIN!

Xenohenge? Do tell. Where? How was it found?

Yes - taking the nebula and working out which part of the galaxy they were being viewed from, then using the in-system info (ringed brown dwarf, twin orbiting planets/planet+moon close bye) to narrow the selection down. Then a little bit of application to find the right one.

Really cool and clever!

so how was it discovered? was it literally by looking at the night sky in the videos? if so, very cool

Yes that's exactly how it was found. CMDR Basch Fon Ronsenburg used the images from the trailer to work out roughly where the system was (based on the Pleiades and Andromeda locations) and then went hunting for the other relevant markers.

And it's in Synuefe xr-h d11-102

You too?

Anywho, when you have the time to read it, the ususal Canonn thread #9 proves to be quite helpful.

Dude, as a filthy casual on my way back from The Centre, I'll be surprised if people in the bubble still speak the same language as I by the time I come back.

I, for one, welcome our new Ancestor overlords.

I was amazed by how quickly it was discovered. I do think showing so much in the trailer may have deprived the community of some gameplay.

However, I am hoping there is more as yet undiscovered stuff to be found... didn't Michael Brookes say something about 'some' of the new mysterious content being shown in the trailer when he appeared on the 2.2 launch day live stream? And I also thought he referred to 'locations' in the plural.

It might be worth reviewing what was said...

No you haven't :)

I don't know why FD continues to give clues in this manner. It's obvious that the Canonn will figure it out no matter how subtle, and usually they'll do it pretty damn quickly. Props to them.
But why not add some set of chained missions or something that players can use to "discover" these kinds of things for themselves? Yes, I know, within hours the Canonn community would have a step by step guide on exactly how to progress through the missions. But as a player you wouldn't have to follow it unless you wanted to (if you got stuck or hit a dead end). Right now it's very binary, you either look at the discovered answer or you don't.

It just seems to me that there's a potential for some good gameplay here that's being missed.

Perhaps if only because there hasn't been a lead up to it. So just arriving there doesn't have that much context. I presume there would have been some galnet articles hinting to its location and a bit of a background story.

That said, it does look rather awesome and it appears like something we can interact with to solve, rather than only outside cryptic puzzles. There is obviously something even more significant to come. I'm gonna have to drag myself away from it since I could spend the next few months experimenting and there is so many ways I'd like to spend my time in game. We complained there wasn't enough content, and now theres too much [haha]

I'm really happy with this update and how the game has progressed this year. :)

I think we are still in for a surprise this December...could be 2.3 or it could be a patch that...turns "them" on.

Patience, this is all leading to something

Because it's cool! :D
I take what happened as "good gameplay" and like it a lot, I really do! :)

Look at all the mysteries that have been discovered around the UA/UP and Barnacles.
If we were to strictly use only in game tools those riddles would have to be a good deal simpler.
