2 missions, one station, full cargo > waste?

I had 2 mission destinations at one station. One was to deliver 4 silver (4 is my max cargo), one was a data delivery.
Silver reward was credits, data delivery was 3 cargo items. (commodities)
When I arrived I could only accept the data delivery claim reward, which rewarded me 3 cargo items which were instanly lost because I had a full cargo hold.
Only after that I could get my silver delivry reward.
Is there a solution to this?
This is the second time I forcibly have to give up mission rewards.
Thanks in advance,

With the new mission template (currently in Beta), you will always have a choice of three rewards for your missions, OP. Two of those choices don't include cargo, so it will be less troublesome.

For now, it's always a good idea to have 4T of spare cargo space if you can manage it.

OP seems to be saying they were unable to turn in the silver first. At a guess there was also a commodity reward associated with it, and maybe cargo missions don’t let you discard it (as data deliveries do)?

They don't. That's correct.

Wait... do they? I don't think they do.

Probably what happened was that the two missions were to different factions at the station.

In the mission board you only see the mission(s) you have to turn in to the currently selected faction. The data mission was to the faction selected when he opened the board. All the OP had to do was select the faction which was to receive the silver delivery and then hand that in first.

But as usual, if you don't know that's what you need to do, the game isn't going to give you much in the way of hints.

UPDATE: Come to think of it, how did the OP manage to turn in the data first? Missions with cargo or material rewards don't usually appear on the mission board for turning in unless there's cargo/material space to accept the reward.

I don't think they do either. Like passenger missions can't be handed in unless you have cargo capacity. That's got me a couple of times, when I've had to re-dock after realising not everyone disembarked. :) I always double-check my transactions tab or nav panel now to ensure I've handed all the missions in.

Never had a problem handing in any mission with cargo reward but no space.

Accepting them? Well yes that’s a problem if no space.

Now dropping off a mission with no spare data slots and data as a reward, that I can’t do.

It would be more fair to allow you to become "overloaded" in situations like this; assume cargo is stacked outside your ship in the dock, but you are prevented from undocking until it is cleared. Would also apply when swapping ships, but not when buying commodities or accepting missions.

That's a good idea. The most annoying thing about the current implementation is that when your cargo hold fills up, you've got to leave the mission board and go to the commodities market. When I'm loaded up on passenger missions with only a small (8t) cargo bay, I sometimes need to offload cargo three or four times when handing in missions. Having to swap between the boards increases the time this takes significantly, as the mission board regularly takes 10 or 20 seconds to load up.

Allow cargo level to exceed ship capacity, but prevent undocking.

Such a simple solution, yet we get some stupid false choice solution that increases UI burden and only solves half the problem..... *sigh*

This is actually impossible. You won't even be able to turn in missions that you don't have the cargo space to accept the rewards from. If you were allowed to turn that mission in with a full cargo hold, then it wasn't a cargo reward.

I suspect that what you actually received was materials. You are allowed to accept material rewards with a full cargo hold because material storage is handled differently.

What happens when you access the mission board to turn in a mission is that the mission board brings all the factions that have missions you might be able to turn in to the top of the mission board queue. If you have to turn in 2 missions from different factions, those two factions will move to the top of the queue.

Filling in one mission, then quitting out of the mission board and filling the other, will make it appear like you were only allowed to complete one at a time. The truth is you needed to move down to the second faction in the mission queue to turn in the silver mission.

You can definitely turn in data missions that have a cargo reward when you have a full cargo hold. The reward cargo is simply dumped. Doesn't work for all mission types, though.

Thanks to everyone who replied!
I indeed did not know the mission reward is displayed for the selected faction, I thought you just had to open and close the mission board as many times as you have missions, which seemed like a weird bug/gameplay decision.
I also just upgraded to a ship with more cargo so this indeed is only a problem in the early game but can screw you over pretty big in your first 10 hours of playing.

You’ll pick it all up soon enough as you go along.

Find a system dropping data missions from all factions to the same destination and farm for a while is my advice. You won’t lose anything other than rebuy if killed and as rep rises so does rewards. 10 missions at 30,000 a time to the same destination mounts up.

And never fly without rebuy. It’s tempting to upgrade early but very painful if it all goes wrong.
