2 rookie questions

About 2 weeks into ED. Playing solo. 2 things I can't figure out.

1. When you get a bounty hunting mission, it says go kill the bad guy in a certain system. Systems are, of course, huge. How do you find the dude you're stalking? I've read about scanning a system, but how do you scan an entire system?

2. When you're hyperjumping between stars, it's easy when there's a line connecting the systems in the Galaxy map. But there are certain systems that have no line connecting it to any other system (at least that I can tell). I can't seem to figure out how to get to those systems.

Thanks,

Robert

1) You look around at targets in super cruise and see if is the target for your mission. Or you go to a signal source and see if he is in one of those.

2) Systems like that require a permit. Which can be obtained either through faction rank rewards, or though getting rep with the faction that runs that system in a nearby system.

1) There is two principle ways to find your prey. Scan ships in super cruise (SC), by targeting them, facing them, and wait the scanner out. On the left side of your display you will soon see the ships status. To engage a ship you find in SC you can either pull then out of SC with a Frame Shift Interdictor, or wait for the to 'Low Wake' into regular space, and follow them by targeting the low wake icon, and dropping in much like you would heading to a station.

2) The second way is to enter Unidentified Signal Sources (USS). These are randomly spawned locations you will find while you're in SC. Once you find one, you target it, and drop in just like you do a station. Be careful about the USS's. What you find in there will be random, and you need to completely scan any targets you find to be sure of their status. '

There are different ranks of signal sources. 'Weak' sources generally only have item floating in space, items associated with the smuggling missions you can take. The items will be illegal, so if you scoop them, avoid being scanned. USS's are the std signal source and will be populated by the targets you seek concerning your OP. 'Strong' signal sources are dangerous. They are there for wings, and/or the most capable pilots. Beware.

The best method for finding any signal source is to drop your speed in SC to the minimum, and watch your Navigation panel on the left, or look for them in space. They will randomly appear. Target, and lock onto them. Line up and drop in as you would a station.

I hope this helps. Good luck out there.

P.S. Be sure to look for a "wanted', "lawless" or "enemy" tag, in red, in your target info display, or you will gain a bounty on your head. If that bothers you.

No, systems with permits have navigation lines drawn to them if they're in range according to your routing settings. Or do they? I haven't looked in a long time. I do know for sure that some systems that don't require permits can appear without the lines drawn to them. For permit systems, you get notified, in your nav screen, galaxy map, and directly if you select them anyway and try to jump to them, that you can't go there without the permit.

This is misinformation so disregard it.
Currently I am sitting at the Lincoln inside Sol. Sirius a system that requires a permit and I currently do not have it. Here is my jump range. jump range.jpg

Here is what my system map looks like with economic route picked.wss01.jpgHere is what I looks like with fastest route.wss02.jpg I wont get a line drawn toSirius regardless of my jump range due to me not having a permit. Edit: If you have an extremely short jump range(7LY or less) these other posters would be correct, as you simply could not jump that range.

I typed so much about the first question that I missed the second. I'm sorry about being long winded. Navigating is a tricky thing. Your ship will have a max jump range. That needs to be managed. To get to certain systems you may need to make more than one jump to get there. You can plan multi-jump trips in the 'Galaxy Map'. You will find that in the Navigation window on your left hand side.

Choose the 'Navigation' tab in the galaxy map. There is a box where you can type in the name of the system you want to get to. Just below that there is the option to choose the most economical, or fastest routes. Choose eco in the beginning until you get more experienced.

You wont get missions for places you cannot go, just as you won't get them for things you cannot do (haul, if you're not equipped for it). Once you get a assassination mission, go to the system and chlll at slowest speed possible (30km/s or something like that) and a USS or SSS will appear, and you'll be safe to drop out of SC right away. Pop your target and get out. You don't need to re-enter SC, just high jump back to your system where you have to turn in your mission.

You said I was wrong, I was not. I pointed out that you were incorrect in saying so, showed proof about what I was talking about, and that he should disregard your statement that I was incorrect. At no point was I rude. I also pointed out that you other posters would also be correct that if he did indeed have a low jump range he would get a similar result as you said. Nothing rude there as well.

This is all very valuable information. Thanks for the reply. Ok, yes In Supercruise I've seen the little parentheses go by, but never targeted them, usually because I had a destination lock. Next time I'll just Supercruise around and target everyone i see. And yes, I had my navigation set to "economical". Will re-set that for "fastest" and see what changes I see. Thanks again.

When you're in supercruise you can see any other ship that's in supercruise in that system, within about 1200 light seconds or so of you. If you have a specific target, he'll show up there; make sure you have an interdictor to pull him out of supercruise. Of course, if you don't, he'll also spawn randomly in an Unidentified Signal Source if you look through enough of them. It usually happens quickly.

Whether you can get to a system that doesn't have a line to it or not depends on your settings. If you have navigation set to 'economical routing', the lines will generally only be drawn to stars a few light years away. In 'fastest routing', the lines will be drawn to every star system within your maximum range, and from those stars, to every star within your maximum range of them. If a star has no lines drawn to it at all, it may mean you can't get there with your ship's hyperspace range at all, in which case you'll need a better drive or longer-ranged ship. Or it may just be something about how the system decides to draw the lines, in which case if you can get close enough you may be able to reach it.

Excellent. Thanks for all the detail. Will try this technique in Supercruise and watch for weak signal sources!

Great screen grabs. Very helpful to understanding how jump paths are computed in economical vs fastest. Thanks. I don't have permits for any place that requires them yet. Been staying neutral in Solo as long as I can.

Ahh, good to know. That explains why so many of the missions remain "unobotainable" for me. I'm still in a Sidewinder and a Hauler. My jump ranges are still limited to about 7LY.

You wont get missions for places you cannot go, just as you won't get them for things you cannot do (haul, if you're not equipped for it).
