Newcomer / Intro 2 things: Eagle and forum glitch

Firstly, I bought an eagle and slapped some stuff on it as I was intrigued by people talking about its manouvrebility. Early days yet but it feels quite nippy. I've already named her "Harmony Angel" because, for some inexplicable reason, that's the type of ship I am reminded of. Anyway, she's tooled up as best as I can fathom how because, if I do get interdicted, I want to try defending myself for once - I'll be using her for short range data missions only when time is short. If there's anything I should be taking into accout, advice is most welcome!

Secondly, has anyone noticed any glitches on the forum since the maintenance? I can't seem to navigate to page two of a couple of threads. "Best advice for newcomers" is one.

Edit: please ignore the glitch thing. There is no page two. Not now.

In any event, BrettC has pointed out that people might have issues due to the DNS for some of the site having changed and advises "flushing your DNS" if you are having issues. See the thread https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=439677 if you want.

I was looking through my ship list and I was surprised to realise that the ship I own the most of are Eagles. Mostly because you can buy them anywhere, theyre cheap and they are great fun to fly :D

in an eagle vs 'real' firepower your best bet is to stay out of the line of fire. at the very basic, boost behind your target and flip, an eagle can do that easily. and the howling ... oh my ...

congratulations, you now own the classiest ship in the game.

about the forum bugs ... never mind. it's just brett making 'improvements'.

When running missions, do not try and fight ships that interdict you. You have everything to lose and virtually nothing to gain. At best, it will waste a lot of time when you could have been earning money from your missions. Always submit and run from interdictions. It's the fastest and safest way to get back to your own business. Use the fastest ship you can get for running missions. Don't carry any weapons. That will make your ship faster and you won't be tempted to have a go. For data missions, I think a Viper is better than an Eagle because it's faster.

I hear you but I've been pulled from SC twice now, once losing the mini game and once wihere the escspe vector went AWOL. The first nearly cost 1.5m but I escaped twice and crashed into a planet The second got me blowed up almost instanyly.

On occsssions like these - which I pray to Jean-Luc Picard are very rare - I want to try and have a go.

Running is always my first action.

I hate to say this as I know you’re not too fussed about combat....but (;) )

In my, admittedly not great, experience ship builds are far more effective when focussed for one purpose. Or at least one purpose at a time. Like you I got fed up being interdicted and so made my Python a fighting trader but it just ended up being a bit crap at both and costing me a fortune.

The other point would be that combat has improved me as a pilot massively but perhaps more importantly, quickly. You could always benefit from combat training by using an unengineered Sidewinder without weapons and dogfight npcs in a Res site to learn better use of throttle, thrusters, yaw etc etc which would all help with future interdictions. I even followed the advice by Vindicator Jones in one of his YouTube vids and spent an hour thrusting face on around an asteroid using all of my inputs whilst keeping close control.

I just wonder if embarking on combat half heartedly, or through frustration may simply lead to more frustration

Good point, however it should be possible to build a good combat ship with acceptable jump range, which would do fine as a data runner.

Whilst the Eagle is a joy to fly, it's not one for much of a fight alas as it is about as robust as a 'wafer thin mint'.

One ship to give a go, imho and with advance apologies to all the Cobra III fans (of which I am one), is the T6. For everything other than combat it's probably the best value small/medium ship you can buy.

Yes that’s very true, anything can run data so long as it can cover the distance. I’ve done it myself in my Chieftain on my way to a CNB and that thing doesn’t even have a glove box.
It’s the last sentence that would be my real concern, though having said that almost everything in the game has that steep learning curve we know so well and, occasionally, I read on the forum of people getting frustrated with the game ( ;) ) so perhaps it doesn’t matter too much how and when you face the frustration.

Yep, just checked the manual

Page One: Do what you want

Although the small print does say don’t be surprised when the Universe does what it wants:D

*the smiley is in the small print. Honest.

Hmmm. I have a T6 that is built for just that - running data but also small cargo runs. It's a steady income for me, not gleaning millions but then I never seem to get to play for hours at a time.

My concern was its apparent lack of ability if push came to shove in a fight and hence Harmony Angel was born (she may become "Symphony",). Not sure if this ought to be her raison d'etre but she's like driving a small kit car with a V8 Chevy lump and extended wheel base for corners.

In any case, the stuff you guys are posting is invaluable for me so reps when I can hand them out.

Edit; Before I signed off last night I kitted out my Sidey for lolz. I may give that some more air miles later.

Regarding the Eagle: how much money do you have, and how much do you want to spend - and which Engineers do you have available?

The Eagle's strengths are its speed and agility, its weakness are the armour/shields and weapons. So, slap on the best thrusters you can afford and dirty upgrade them as far as possible. If you have one of the thruster engineers unlocked (Felicity, Elvira, Palin) you can get 3A enhanced thrusters (still further engineerable) from them, which really make the Eagle fly - if you can keep the mass down.
Mass is the challenge in outfitting an Eagle: the thrusters (3A/3A enhanced) have a minimum mass of 60/70 tons unengineered. At 50 tons for the naked hull, that leaves you with 10/20 tons for everything else before every gram you put on is immediately noticeable in the performance.

E.g.: this would be your basic A-rated Eagle https://s.orbis.zone/SrsDy6ke - top speed of 261 m/s, boosting to 380. Nothing to write home about, and also quite hard to understand why everyone is recommending it as a fast fighter.
On the other hand, take the same Eagle with full out engineering: https://s.orbis.zone/crY8j0eB - 538 m/s regular speed, boosting to 784 m/s. Fast enough to outrun seeker missiles, and even 2 tons spare capacity for e.g. a small cargo rack.

Of course, in either case - one hit from a size 3 turret (for example), and you're in serious trouble. So don't get hit.

And in case you were wondering: this is what a proper Sidewinder may look like: https://s.orbis.zone/LBYqTRyV . If you encounter a shieldless Sidey, don't bother to pack - just run :p.

I have Fe and Elvira. I lack some mats. Hmm. Perhaps I'll get my AspX out and grab some stuff en route to get both the Eagle and Sidey some engineering.

The Eagle was recommended as a training fighter to learn combat basics at a Nav Beacon or Low RES, not for mission running. Best to learn combat in these places for a couple of hours before trying to shoot mission interdictors as you can choose your targets at a Nav or RES but when interdicted you can not. Once combat basics are learnt then try to take on interdictors as you should know by then what to shoot at and what to run away from. When mission running though I would use a very fast ship if possible so not engineered you would probably be looking at a Cobra III or Viper III (or ICourier). This means that if combat goes wrong you can bug out to let shields charge back up.

My Cobra has G3 dirty drives... Perhaps I'll ditch the Eagle in favour of a Vipet. Or buy one new. So many choices!

Have anout 25m banked so it's doable but I was going to try and save for a Python or FDL at some point. In the distant future. Like 10,191.

Yeah, I remember the huge cost step up to the Python although I bypassed it by going IClipper and then T9, Anaconda and only bought a Python later. However, I much prefer fast or very fast ships, the Clipper is much like a big Cobra III to fly. Back then though I was cargo running...

Hmmm. I have a T6 that is built for just that - running data but also small cargo runs. ...

I used mine for trading in the early days, before I got the Python. I then refitted it for passenger missions, and this proved pretty profitable, although with a Python pretty much any other multirole medium pad ship is pointless.
