Newcomer / Intro 2 weeks in

Enjoying the game exploring , fighting , trading but getting nowhere fast , I'm in need of a plan to follow
Goals to get credits upgrade my ship or buy a new one , so I guess what's the best / quickest way ( sorry in advance if this question has been asked before ) cheers CMDR JxJester

I would think that the fastest/easiest way of getting cr. is BH in a RES but since you are fairly new to the game it might be a good idea to BH at the local Nav.beacon to start out with just to get the hang of it....

Since you didn't told us whitch ship and how much credits you've got it's hard to give any advise on whether you should upgrade your ship or go for a new ship all together... In any case you can always upgrade your ship and get all you money back if you sell(downgrade) them again before trading your current ship in with the next one....

Only a sidewinder with some upgrades. 7k worth of credits <here the laughter>. Spent 20k on upgrades , cargo rack 4 , gimballed pulse laser , power dist

Cheers

Well, i was the same as you, what to do early in the game? In the end i chose to head to one of the three faction capitals, on the way i did a bit of trading and bounty hunting, and scanned every astronomical object i could. Easily got me my Cobra and some starting weapons for it.

I would advise getting into Bounty-Hunting (Killing NPCs with 'wanted' status) with some sidey upgrades. it's a great income stream to get you started! Look for 'Mostly harmless' and 'novice' NPCs untill you get the hang of it. the AI doesn't seem to get particularly smarter as the rating goes up but 'master' and 'expert' NPCs to seem to perform as tho they have fully upgraded ships. also be mindful of NPCs in a wing. (NPCs in a wing will have "In wing #/#" in the target info Hologram) if you aggro an NPC in a wing, it's wing-mates will also aggro you. This can be very hard to handle in a basic sidewinder.

as for upgrades? I would suggest getting some gimbaled Pulse lasers for your sidey, and perhaps improve the thrusters (and powerplant if needed). when you can afford it get into an eagle it can mount an extra gun. at which point i would go with a fixed beam laser (to quickly destroy shields in your initial attack) and 2 Multi-cannons to destroy the hull. small multi-cannons wreck anything that has no shields smaller then a cobra in seconds. the ultimate bounty hunting boats seem to be the Viper/vulture but they are much more expensive and will take some time to get into and upgrade apropiately.

Trading is also GREAT money especially the illicit goods, BUT you need to either be good enough to get in and out of stations quickly without getting scanned or deal from outposts. for legal goods, you really need a larger hauler (like one of the Lakon series) to move bulk for bigger return per trip. again this requires a sizable base investment for the ship and goods, and if you loose it in your first run, you could be in a bad way. also bear in mind that trading will require you doing some homework on supply and demand. there are a good bit of online tools for this.

My advice is don't set yourself goals you won't reach for a long time. So if you're in a sidewinder, don't even think about an anaconda. Simply look at reaching the next rung of the ladder. Just try to build up your faction and elite rankings one by one. Aim for the next ship you'll be able to afford. Remember elite is all about the journey, there is no finish line and no time limit.

Tonight's episode : Strong Signal Source , jumps in to investigate opps ambush = Sidewinder Blown to bits :)

Ellay good advice also ......

Well, it might not be everyones cup of tea, but after a frustrating period of making and losing credits trading I eventually scraped enough together to buy a Hauler and some mining gear and headed out in search of a fabled pristine metallic ring. Those were some hard yards at the coal face but the credits rolled in, nothing quite like finding a rock that contains Palladium and Platinum! Watch out for the bandits trying to rob you of your hard earned minerals though. I chose to mine on the quiet side, well away from the nearest RES.

I don't think there's a right way and a wrong way to go about it. At first I was hungry for the credits, but after a couple of runs I was just keen to see if I could fill a hold full of precious metals. And the views out there are spectacular...

Resource Extraction site. Upgrade to eagle when you have money. Upgrade to Viper when you have money.

In 3 days you should have millions. If you do not like Elite space shooting, you probably wont like the rest of the game either, and now you know it.

If you want more shooting, stay in the viper. If you start feeling that you want to do something else, Cobra is rather good option to go with. Cobra is good for trading rares. You can google about it, and I am sure you find a nice route to do it.

Cobra is overall handy to do all kind of things, so you can test exploration and mining with it as well. I still would skip mining till the upgrade is out.

Cobra can be rather expensive with all the upgrades.

If you stay in your Viper, and get it fully upgraded, ~3.5 million. Type-6 is ok to test trading. You need ~1.5 million, but maybe better to have that 2 million credits before you start trading.

With Viper/Cobra, also test the rest of the game mechanisms that you have not yet touched. If there are. You will learn that some things are far better than others. We all hope fixes here.

At this point, you probably start working on your goals/ranks & credits, and you pretty much know what kind of game Elite is. What ever you would like to do, do it. On top of that, in case mining is not upgraded to be a serious income option, you will be trading a lot, more than the best korea grinders ever, heavy medicines recommended.

Follow Galnet news, if there are community goals, those do have rather ok rewards. Might be worth to look into, will give you a break from trading.

And the following ships...

ASP - Very good to grind reputation, just fly between couple systems doing cargo missions from one to another.
Type-7 - Find rather ok trade route (~+2000-2500credits/ton from both way trip), and you will be doing very good credits.
Vulture - Viper upgrade. After this you really wont need a better combat ship for PvE. For Open PvP, the ship is simply too slow. If you are on winning side that is ok, but if not, you are dead.

Hafe fun!

2 weeks? ....... mmmmmmmmm if you say so

before you play any further.......

scour this forum site for "how to's"... download the manual and read it from end to end.. then read it again

ignore the RES bounty hunting suggestions ... most of those players are way... way past sidewinder stage and have no clue, or have forgotten, how hard it is to kill anything with Class 1 pew pew pulse lasers

you need to build up your Sidey, increase the jump range with updated FSD and Power Plant and Power distributor... and get a small cash cushion .... take courier missions and cargo delivery from all the stations and outposts in your starter system and in sytems nearby... they cost you nothing from your own cash

then look at the fetch missions... plenty of threads on here on how do these and basic trading

don't touch... kill or smuggling (considered illegal) missions, or find black box etc missions or wander into SSS (you know already !!)

your immediate aims should be

a) get used to controls and basic flight and evasion from interdiction skillz

b) build up that Sidey

c) Get out of the starter area into a system at least 50 - 100Ly away

d) Get enough Credits to purchase a Hauler, basic D class upgrades and a good sized cash float to buy goods to trade..

Come back here and ask questions related to specific problems, after using the search function or good old Google, ED wiki and numerous other sources. Asking broad based questions will get vague answers and just leave you more confused

remember..... there is no end game :)

why rush ?

EDIT

If you have access to TS (TeamSpeak) consider joining a group like Mobius... the guys and gals will give you loads of advice.. asking costs... nothing :D:cool:

2 weeks yes but 20 hours max game time so actually very little in Elite Dangerous terms , I have TS for other game types so maybe a good shout , gone are they days I could ever spend 8 hours a day or night playing PC games :(

All good advice I'll pick through the threads

Cheers all

Just a warning: Don't try to get rich too quick! If you succeed you may have ruined the game for yourself. In my experience it's the most fun if you always do babysteps, as that gives you something to play for. There are trading tools out there that can help you make up to 6 Mill. CR an HOUR, that's what I made in the first three MONTHS...

Just don't become one of those people who got to an Anaconda after two weeks and now find the game boring as they already have everything there is to get in the game.

After roughly six months I'm in a C-grade Vulture with 12 Mill. CR to my name, FAR away from the 147 Mill. an Anaconda would cost me, and I'm loving it :)
