Sad news indeed...I grew up with comics all the way through the 80s so am familiar with the work on the early 2000ad storylines.
Point to note here that this very name was "borrowed" from a storyline in 2000ad from yesteryear. "verminstar" was actually the name given to a female vampire who worked as a strontium dog...it was an old storyline and the name stuck.
Adds a liitle nostalgia going down memory lane there...this artist helped nurture the sci fi cravings of a spotty, weird teenager...peace go with his family.
