2016 Career Change - Successful Trader / Trucker seeks career change to become Fighter

Apologies for the long post here guys but hopefully the background is useful

Started playing at launch for 3 months till Mar last year, trading in the solo game and managed to rake in about 35m credits then got bored. Currently have a very well kitted out Lakon 7, but only killed once.

Rekindled my interest in ED and bought a new PC, have HOTAS and now want to improve my (non existent) combat skills so that I can do more things, bounty hunting, missions and maybe get involved in the politics etc

Looking for advice about how I can start as a newbie and develop my combat skills and try to make some money as well.

Questions would be:

  • Which ship and kit (considering I don't want to get killed in a very expensive ship every 5 minutes)
  • Which system and where (Nav beacon or other site type)
  • Do I just jump in and start playing the Open Game
  • Ways to improve skills - recommend you tube videos or tutorials
  • HOTAS bindings best for combat

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Keep your Lakon 7 as a reliable money machine, as to fighters start with something inexpensive like a Viper mk3 or a mk4 if you want better range and some multirole ability

Viper mk3

Viper mk4

The Asp scout is a great fighter although a little slow but excellent agility and great weapon placement

The Vulture is one of the best dogfighters in the game but it's a bit power starved so the weapon options are limited, I use fixed pulse but try gimballed first and see how it goes

The FAS is near the top end of your budget but it's bit of a monster with heavy armour and weapons and great agility, average cruise speed but high boost speed

A kitted out Vulture is a good ship for starting combat and it'll be cheaper than the FAS. (Although the FAS is better for combat - but needs fed ranking of Chief Petty Officer or above)
I'd recommend doing bounty hunting in a High-Res to start with, then Haz-Res later. There are plenty about... Generally it's decent credits and serious fun :) ; wouldn't recommend jumping into open straight off ,though.

I would go for High Res then to hazar res sites, mix it with combat zones. I would also do some assassination missions as they are different than res/cz fighting.

For starting i would recommend vulture (A rated if possible). If you don´t have money to fit good vulture i would go for viper or cobra variants and check what i like Cheap rebuy.

Give yourself limit, like "if i have only 60% hull left i go to repair. This way you can control your self and avoid dying. No need to push your luck. Better run away early than take fight you can´t win

Vulture is the way to go, if you want a cheap and great fighting ship. Im using dual pulse setup so you can stay basicly forever untill fuel runs low.

Controller setup, dont know i use XBox 360 one.
For Open play dont really know a good fighter but for PvE Vulture is great.
