2025 - The Largest Ship is NOT the Panther Clipper MK II

No, the expectations of many were based on the legend of the original Panther Clipper that it would be the biggest ship. However, it's too short and lacks in cargo capacity. So the PC Mk II or a variant should live up to its legacy.
In terms of cargo space it is the biggest ship by far, which is what matters imho.

And there are some signs we might get engineered cargo racks to get it even higher cargo.

Sure, I would've also liked the version of the pad filling behemoth. But what we got is good enough imho. FD usually never gets overboard with stuff. "Managing Expectations" is a good name for a PCmk2

Currently yes, but not compared to the original Panther Clipper. In this respect the cargo capacity is a disappointment.

Agreed. We can only hope for a long variant of the PC Mk II.

Disagree, the level of detail and overall design is great, but too short. It looks like a Banded bullfrog.

And many more want an even bigger ship that cannot dock inside a station, and many people want something many times the size of a carrier. People always want what they don't have. And when they do finally have it, it's right back to asking for something even bigger because it's not actually about what is achievable.

There is no way for the developer to support that expectation.
Yes, people are often terrible in their excesses. I'm not really that type of person.
I'm very modest in my wishes: I want players to be able to set up a shipyard in ED where they can design and build ships and sell them to other players.

This is a brand new Panther Clipper in FE2. With no equipments, no weapons, no shield, no fuel.
Do see the cargo space ? It's written in french, it's just right of the word "Espace" : 1400 t
It's a lot less than 2100t from you bad memories or dreams.

And as I said, there is no fuel and no dedicated fuel tank. So if you want to jump somewhere, you need to sacrifice room from your cargo.
It's 81t for a max jump (only 9.12 AL...), and if you want to chain jumps, sacrifice more cargo...
And in that game, you NEED weapons, shield, radar, autopilot. So you need to remove again some cargo

1238t total with weapons, good fuel tank and far better jump range is a lot better than the original...

You're right that the original's internal capacity is reduced from 2100t to 1400t with a Class 8 Drive (600 tons) + fuel and other utilities (~100 tons). These stats aren't clearly described on websites. However, the PC Mk II has = 1238 t (max) which is still less than the original.

This video at 3:16 minutes says:
  1. Maximum Gross Mass: 2,500 t.
  2. Empty Mass: 400 t.
  3. Payload Capacity: 2,100 t.
This video (31:38 min) says capacity after drive: 1400 t

Here it says:
  1. Hull Mass: 400t
  2. Mass (Fully Laden): 2500t
  3. Internal Capacity (No Drive): 2100t
  4. Internal Capacity (With Class 8 Drive): 1400t
So the PC Mk II is a downsized version. A lot of space on the pad (length) remains unused. It should've been a behemoth that fills the large landing pad.

You still need to remove the fuel for jumps, 160t for only 2 full 9.12LY jumps... 50t for minimum equipments. and you're under 1200t...

I don't have Elite II installed so I can't test it atm.

Quote of another disappointed person: "Colour me seriously underwhelmed, you bring in Colonization which requires massive hauling numbers and your best pass at a new ship isn't even 2 Cuttter loads capacity."

The Beluga Liner: 209.1m long vs the PC Mk II: 146.86m long. = 62.24m shorter than the Beluga. So is this the largest ship? No. 62 meters (length) of the large landing pad is unoccupied. It should be 60+ meters longer with an additional 762 tons capacity for 2000 tons total.

No. Compared to the original it's very similar.

Compared to peoples hopes and dreams of 2000t, it may be a disappointment, but this is Elite Dangerous, not First Encounters.

The new ship looks proportionally similar to the previous version, which I guess is the reason it's "frog" like. If it were longer like the passenger liners would it really look like a Panther Clipper?

And the length of the ship IS entirely irrelevant to how much space fdev decided to allow.

The internal volume of the beluga is semi consumed by engines (theoretically)..and it's much narrower. I think it might still be a toss up for volume of potential usable space if we consider engines taking up space. (And if we're going to exclude engines as part of the space available to the pc, then we must subtract from other ships and assume equiv size engines as appropriate)
