Astronomy / Space 212hr exposure of Orion

I just saw this and though you all might like to see it!

Here's the link with added info added to the pic: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/1511/Orion212_Volskiy_5574.jpg

I cannot find the info on this picture, is it human visible, or different spectrum(s) used, like most of the best space pictures?

The Orion Complex is mostly invisible to the naked or unaided eye. So that ought to be a collage of different (narrowband) images from various spectral types and exposures. I think it's at least visual light, infrared and oyxgen absorption which makes for the rich hues in red and blue. The darker dust clouds usually appear when they are so dense that they even block infrared light. That's what makes them show up as dark blops.

The picture is truly amazing and Orion is still one of THE eyecatchers.

Here's the HP of the photographer and if I am not mistaken he won the 'Astronomy Picture Award' at least once.

Yes, IRL the nebulas would "look", to the naked eye aboard a spaceship next to them, much less spectacular than they look in-game - they've been "hollywoodized" to make them look more interesting.

Barnard's Loop, for example, is invisible to the naked eye, even dark-adapted with perfect seeing conditions; no-one suspected it existed until the invention of astrophotography in the early 1900s.

I can see this nebula from my garden with my 5" scope, but it looks more like a faint grey smudge... :D

Moved to the astronomy forum.

I saw this yesterday and was blown away.

But why did you post a spoiler? You should have left it up to us to work out where everything is.

My question to you guys is what is that dark region directly under Betelgeuse? :D

When you take a refernce to this picture:

my first guess would be the black inky blop is part of the Taurus Dark Region lying in line of sight (so to say) between Sol and the Orion Molecular Complex.
However, in the game you will also find a singular blop named 'Orion Dark Region' 'behind' Barny's Loop so that may also be it.
