25 things you might not know about ED even if you have played awhile.

Thought I'd post a few random tidbits of knowledge that took me a surprisingly long time to learn. Feel free to add more if you like.

1) if you deploy landing gear it switches the left and right fire triggers to left and right thrusters to help with landing (that's on my 360 controller...ymmv).

2) if you set a hotkey to 75% throttle, it will perfectly match the right speed to slow down toward a target in SC as long as you hit it any time before the clock reaches 0:05. So useful.

3) if you go into hyperspace you can throttle back to 0 once the timer countdown starts, and your ship will emerge at its destination at a dead stop, rather than smashing into a star. Useful for brief AFK moments.

You can add to this, that ship scanning also involves high speed rammings, and its resulting fines if not bounty
and dont bother to change instances for missions you used to enjoy reward wise anyways....they are ...gone, till maybe 2.1 BB as it is now is comparable to junk mail

I feel like Ive been mislead... Its almost like a friend inviting you over for pizza and when it arrives he only lets you have 1 bite... and it has mold on it.

I'm sure there are lots more little tidbits out there if people want to add them. I just wanted to get the ball rolling :)

This I didn't think of. Great idea. Thanks for the tip. Have some rep.

Took me almost 6 months before i noticed you could change your scanner range. Yes, its in the manual, I have no idea how i failed to read that, unless it was added later after i read it.

When you have a route set to jump through several systems you only need press the jump key each time after cool down and you need not select the hyperspace each time from the left holographic screen.

Here's another one I didn't know until recently: there are two ways to get out of normal space. One goes to the selected target and will fail if target is obscured, but the other way will put you into SC regardless of whether you have anything targeted. Good for getting out of fights.

I have both setup on my controller now whereas the default for advanced pad 2 only has the former method. Was very annoying trying to take off from planets when my target system was invariably obscured.

Oh and yet another one is if you set a hotkey to I think it's called "select next target on route" if you have say 5 jumps programmed into the nav computer, you can select other targets in a system and when you're ready to jump you just hit that hotkey and you're good to go. No need to re-plot the course again.

Yet another one is that if you go into functions in the right display screen, you can change your gun sight mode from leading to trailing. Useful to test which one you like when using kinetic weapons like cannons, because it makes a big difference imo.

Leading will put the target reticle out in front of the enemy so you point your ship ahead of him to lead him into your guns, whereas trailing will put the reticle on your target if you orient your ship properly.

The result is the same but I find personally that the trailing sight feels better.

I didn't find out about that until recently either. I was reading up on how to explore planets and saw that one can adjust the sensor range out to see more big blue circles.

5. If you turn on your lights while mining it will illuminate the asteroid at the right range to start shooting
6. Shooting at a fed doing a scan will stop the scan a 600Cr Bounty on you is better than a 60000cr fine
7 on the system map - if you want to see planetary bases just click on the moon and use your centre mouse wheel to zoom in/out of the moon surface

My Son showed me that you can plot a route all the way to a station in another system. Can't believe i didn't know this. It saves precious time when smuggling, don't have to find the station in the left panel when i arrive. After a year playing i didn't know LOL

You don't have to zero the throttle during the countdown, anytime after the countdown will work as well.

The station entrance is always on the face that spins Anti-Clockwise.

When you are docked and looking at starport services (where is shows you your ship hologram in the top centre), you can rotate your little ship graphic by clicking and dragging:)

If you are mining, i think the maximum number of collectors you can have is 10 and the little fellas go crazy....

- after FSD spool-up for a Jump/SC is complete but facing a mass-lock ahead in close proximity - hitting Afterburner accelerates the Ship rapidly enough to activate FSD in minimum time, even if the Ship enters the Mass-lock again while Countdown then running

- as soon as the Countdown for a SC/Jump has started, the Ship becomes invincible to any attack or collision during these ~5 sec and nothing can or will stop it (only Heat can still build up)

- ever got an oddball Notification in your Comms Window? Ever seen "Mission Target" NPCs despite carrying no Missions? These are based on some of your previous actions (good or bad), follow one into its Low Wake to find out what it is
(hint : FdL NPCs will be Bounty Hunters, you made a Faction angry and they placed a Bounty on your head.... these will strike against you at random locations and random moments and won't go away until you deal with them, even after weeks)

- while mass-scooping anything with Collector Limpets, placing the Cargo hatch ~40m right above the cloud of stuff will enable "Turbo-Scooping". Turnaround time for Limpets can be as low as ~1sec under optimal conditions...

- Prospector Limpets can be fired within or around Stations without penalty, docking with active Collector Limpets as well carries no penalty

- Collector Limpets actually work as "poor man's Scoopable stuff detectors" over Planets - deploy one if you can't locate POI content from the Ship and see it suddenly depart towards a certain spot -> there's your POI

- Prospector Limpets fly straight over Planets, only after crashing Gravity will take over... can make for some funny "Hit the SRV" or "get crashed, bouncing Prospector into crater" minigames etc. :)

- as soon as outermost Orbital Cruise is reached, any found or jettisoned Cargo will behave like on Planets -> disappears from Scanner >45m range and subject to Gravity; manually scooping Signal Source content found within this area is nearly impossible for that reason

-beginning inside Orbital Cruise region, Planets will permit the Ship in FA off to free-fall to achieve greater speeds than even Afterburner would normally afford it... can be used to evade other pursuing Ships

If you are about to travel past a USS because you are traveling too fast, throttle back fully and deselect the USS. The ship will stop abruptly. This is really useful for entering signal sources when traveling really fast between planets or stars. Try it.

Something I found out relatively recently is the Open Galaxy Map shortcut button on UI Tab - Transactions: Mission (in your left UI) doesn't work no? (you press it and nothing happens).

Well it does if you have Starport Services OPEN at the time, then this "Open Galaxy Map" shortcut to go directly to where the mission relates to will work. edit: only works when docked.. obviously ;)

This is a fairly recent addition to the game, although it is currently bugged and you'll find the station deselected sometimes when you arrive at your destination system.
