2600K 4.5G, 980Ti, CV1 Performance Info.

Hi folks!

Specs are per title; 16 GB DDR3-1866, MSI Gaming 980Ti with small additional OC. I wanted to provide a datapoint for Rift performance for those that may be interested.

With the game set to highest everything, except no AA, 1.0 supersampling (i.e. no change), motion blur off, and a 1280x768 Window 'mirrored' to my monitor (this is how SDK 1.3 likes to work), I've noticed the following:

- Subjective experience is completely smooth
- Measured performance shows mostly 90fps maintained. In general space it'll occasionally dip to 80-85 fps.. Perhaps near planets. In space stations (Visited two 'big' types), saw a few dips down to ~ 74-78 fps, but most of the time 84+, and a lot of 90 fps.
- Was flying in an Imperial Cutter which may or may not have more to render than other ships.

EDIT: Flying around planets (in/out of canyons, above mostly flat surfaces), the FPS was typically around 70-80 with this setup. I did see a couple of dips down to as low as 45 fps though. The rift still felt 'good' although some fast spins definitely made me realize I was wearing a VR headset :). 980Ti cannot max out CV1 on planets but runs quite well..

Summary: The Oculus 1.3 drivers are doing a great job in making the subjective experience better than the numbers; previously with DK1 or DK2 if you dropped even 1 fps below the desired framerate you'd have a very bad subjective experience.

Cool.

Subjectively, how much better does it look in CV1 compared with DK2?

I'm having a much better time reading text with CV1 (no SS) than DK2 (with SS). It's been about 5-6 months since I had the DK2 so there may have been other changes.

Graphics definitely feel better too - and there feels to be less fisheye on the lense (since you have to train your head to turn instead of just moving your eyes). I'd like to see more resolution (coming from a 3440x1440 monitor), but CV1 is pretty good!

Finally, it's definitely smoother all around and you can turn around and look backwards in the ship without instant judder/tracking problems..

I would love to read a visual comparason CV1 against DK2.

Apart from the text which can be a bit tricky to read (the small text anyway) I don't mind the DK2!

OP - I would be really grateful if you could find and fly about 500m up over a featureless planet (~1G worlds have areas with feaureless terrain) idealy at night. What is this like? This is the only time I notice the screendoor effect with the DK2, what is it like with the CV1?

Thanks!

OK - went to a planet - flew around 500m up - both in canyons and on relatively flat surfaces in the darkness. The screendoor effect wasn't really noticeable to me. The places I notice it are if I stare at the (orange radar) and let my eyes change focus i'll see it.. It's most noticeable when looking at a planet in the (near) distance where most of it is dark and some is lit up -- the bright part shows some evidence of the honeycomb. The SDE is definitely substantially gone vs. the DK2...

(I'm updating my original post with FPS info for planets)

Sounds good, not perfect, but still good and since you haven't used the DK2 since way back, before the proper direct mode, 1.3, timewarp and graphic driver updates, it may be a bit off in comparison.

But many thanks for the 1st proper review and really looking forward to my pre order arriving :)

Fly safe :)
