Hardware & Technical 29" 21:9 2560x1080 vs 27" 16:9 2560x1440... choices choices help me make them

Getting a 21:9 monitor is easily the 2nd best PC purchase I have ever made :) (the first being an Oculus Rift)

When I recorded that video you linked - I had the aspect ratio set to default, I have since changed it to just under 70.

I haven't tried a 2560x1440 monitor yet so I can't compare.

But what I can tell you is that the 21:9 aspect ratio is amazing for games, and it is also very good for desktop work and video editing - as it provides a whole lot more workspace.

if you have no other criteria, like 16:9 for movies or work or i don't know, then i would say wider is better

haven't tried it myself, but just watched the video in the link on my 3 screens (so most of the sides was black obv.) to simulate it and looked nice..

Don't forget most movies are in 21:9 aspect ratio, which means such movies will completely fill the screen - no black borders on top and bottom, or the sides.

With 16:9 TV Shows, you will get black borders at the sides when viewed on a 21:9 monitor.

But movies look spectacular! :)

No real world experience, but if i couldn't run 3 screens for some reason (like desk/room space) then i'd definitely go for a 21:9. Our eyes are set next to each other, we see wider than we do vertically, so it makes more sense to me.

How about 3x 21:9 monitors? 7680x1080 could be pretty nice! :)

Personally I will always go for the higher resolution.
More pixels. Higher dots per inch. Better to the eye.
1080 high is awful to my eye. I had monitors back in the 80s that had higher vertical resolution than that. HD my ass!

Hi

Wow that looks truly amazing, seriously high immersion increase, makes 16:9 feel like 4:3

So basically... ultra-wide is awesome all round, go for it ?

I can't think of any reason not to.

Only 2 downsides I can think of: 1) 1080p is a bit on the low end now. 2) Not every single game supports 21:9 (though the vast majority do).

But both of those are more than made up for with what you gain. :)

My kids were playing Lego Batman 3 on this monitor the other day. I set it up split screen for two players, and due to how wide the monitor is, they basically had a full 4:3 screen each on the single 21:9 monitor... :D

And as for Elite - it's really hard to go back and watch it being played on a 16:9 monitor... :)

It could, but for that width i think i would want more height. Heck, i think 3 16:10 screens would probably be better than 3 16:9 to be honest, as you do get a strong fish-eye effect on the outer panels that takes some getting used to. Of course, i'm only using 23" panels so upping to 27" would probably also work, and the advantage of keeping to 6038x1080 is that it's less pixels for my GPU to push around.

Probably lots of other reasons, albeit not so gaming-orientated, such as panel uniformity, colour/contrast change with viewing angle, possibly focal plane issues(?). That said am v tempted.

The higher resolution model for sure, unless it has a very slow clock rate.

Although, you know, there's always 4K! :D Just imagine flying through the rings of a planet where you could count the bumps of an asteroid a light-second away.

A couple of months back I bought an Asus ROG Swift when they were released. Main points: G-sync ; 2560x1440 ; 1ms G-G

Great, butter-smooth monitor, but it's a TN panel, which means it's somewhat "misty" in comparison to the dynamic range of an IPS panel.

It's not awful, but you definitely need to do some tweaking to make the colour acceptible. Speed-wise it's amazing, arguably more than ED needs. I'm running it from an ASUS GTX780 card and it handles it perfectly. The increase in image crispness was less than I had expected, coming from a 1920x1080 screen, and in hindsight I would have preferred a 4k screen. The difference with them is noticable, with parallel lines losing a good deal of the "shimmering" effect that you get with lower resolutions.

Screenwise my perfect setup would be a curved IPS 34" 21:9 format screen with equivalent density to a 28" 4K (which would make it about 5k x 2.5k pixels) run from 2 x 980 GPUs in SLI. But such a monitor doesn't exist as yet.

i'm running ED on a 34 inch 21:9 monitor at 3440x1440, it looks amazing, i was going to go for an eyefinity setup but the 34 incher swung it for me, with a trackir it's bloody gorgeous, i'll take a screenie once i can get into the game

Hi

So new monitor time coming up December and seeing these 29" 21:9 screens is really interesting (Basically 23" monitor in height but much wider for those who don't know).
From what I've researched so far your immersion factor increases dramatically with the 21:9 aspect ratio (See below). Does anyone here have real world experiance with both and can give me some input ?

Thanks

If you can afford it get one of the new LG (or soon to be dell) curved 1440p 34" 21:9 screens ;)

I've run 21:9 and 16:9 monitors side by side and the choice isn't clear cut, tbh. For general use I prefer 16:9, 21:9 feels a bit like peeking through a (large) letterbox.

Assuming similar size monitors (I used a 34" 1440p ultra-wide LG and a 32" 1440p BenQ) 21:9 is the better aspect ratio for ED since it's been designed with a horizontal layout in mind, but in the end I thought ED simply looked better on the 32" 16:9 because it uses a VA panel and has wonderful deep blacks and very good contrast. The 34", like all ultra-wide models, uses an IPS panel and just can't deal with a dark game like ED as well as VA can.

And ultra-wide monitor with a VA panel would be ideal for ED, but alas such a beast doesn't exist yet.

Shame VA image lag/response isnt as good

it's not like you can't get 34" 1440p curved 21:9 VA screens ;)
