Hardware & Technical 29" 21:9 2560x1080 vs 27" 16:9 2560x1440... choices choices help me make them

I have both monitor sizes on my 3 monitor setup. I bought the 2560 x 1080 originally, but I found I really didn't like it. I develop in VS 2013 a lot and I found I just didn't get along with it, even tho I was coming from a 1080p screen, so the height was the same. I didn't game on it mind you, but browsing didn't feel right. Snapping an app full screen just left so much empty real estate on the sides. Now I have it as a 2nd monitor it works better, and I just snap to the sides.
The 2560x1440 is absolutely superb tho. Both gaming and for general stuff, including development work.
If I decide to fire up the gamma at the weekend I might try swapping back to the 21:9 to see what it's like, but it's certainly not a long term swap for me.
Edit: If you really wanted I'll take screenshots of ED in action for you if it helps.

2560x 1080 or 1440...

I would have thought the answer is obvious, the 1440. Why would anyone go for a lower pixel density AND lower resolution? More real-estate in games maybe, but still less pixels to play with.

Getting a 21:9 monitor is easily the 2nd best PC purchase I have ever made :) (the first being an Oculus Rift)

When I recorded that video you linked - I had the aspect ratio set to default, I have since changed it to just under 70.

I haven't tried a 2560x1440 monitor yet so I can't compare.

But what I can tell you is that the 21:9 aspect ratio is amazing for games, and it is also very good for desktop work and video editing - as it provides a whole lot more workspace.

I have an asus like that, 2560x1080 is the only way to go.

I can only afford the 29 inch or 27". It will bump my number of screens to 3 (2 23inch at the moment) and multitask a lot. I use my computer for web, videos and games. I may occasionally use visual studio and/or SQL but I try to keep work at work.

A couple of months ago I faced the exact same choice as the OP. I had an old Samsung 22" 1680x1050, and couldn't decide to go for a 29" ultrawide or a 27" 2560x1440 (both Dell).

In the end I chose the latter for the higher vertical resolution, and at 16:9 it was still a width improvement over the old one which was 16:10. And I have to say I am not disappointed with my choice.

I got a new monitor right after Christmas. A ASUS MX299Q. A 29" 2560x1080. I came from a 1920x1200 and was really worried about losing another inch at the top but after seeing this thing in games I dont miss it at all and really love the picture of this baby. Its like WOW hehe.
