2k or 4k screen for Elite: Dangerous...

Depends on how much cash you want to spend and the PC you will be driving it with. To get the full effect at 4k you will want a GTX1080 and a dcent CPU to back it up (such asn i7 6700k\7700k etc).

Elite does look awesome at 4k though when at max settings on a nice monitor! :D

EDIT: While I realise this may seem redundant cos the screen above linked IS Gsync, how can I be sure that this is the important part of your selection criteria, therefore, full explanation below. :)

2K for the next 3 to 4 years, especially when you bear in mind...

...if you're buying a monitor which will be used for gaming (even if that's not its primary use), then you owe it to yourself, your GFX card and your eyes, to get one with at least 144hz and adaptive sync. Adaptive sync means that it can adjust the vertical frequency on the fly, which means you can turn off VSYNC as a graphics option that limits your frame processing rate and creates input lag, but more important is the potential for seeing every frame up to 144fps, and being able to lower the vsync rate without tearing. Additionally, the gameplaying experience will be HUGELY smoother (everyonen who sees it for the first time does a double take), the effect is similar to a 30% graphics card upgrade. Even surfing the web on a 144hz screen is a WHOLE different experience.

I use Dell S2716DG which is about the cheapest GSYNC monitor there is, it does suffer a little from colour washout, and the viewing angles are awful, but true 1ms response and 144hz with Gsync is something that once you have tried you cannot live without.

I think probably the best value right now is the 27" Acer Predator with 165hz, but you can spend as much as you want, there is even a super wide, curved GSYNC Asus one, but it must be thousands.

So, yeh, screen above, awesome, but no better than any other dedicated to gaming GSYNC screen, so shop around. :)

edit: Ya know what, for a grand, that is pretty good, get the alienware one. lol (after I said all that, lol)

Ive got 3x asus ROG PG278Q monitors with g-sync.. i couldnt live without it anymore.

if i would buy a new one, i would go for the 35" curved 200hz g sync monitor from ROG.

That's the one I mean, how much is it now? I know you linked me the other day, but it's thousands, right?

This needs to be moved to the Hardware thread...

Depends on your GFX card.

I'm running 3 x 4k with a modestly overclocked 1080Ti. Ultra settings with 0.65 subsampling means that it's running @ about 3 x 1440p equivalent. At this rez you don't need Anti Aliasing... It's quite beautiful and hard to tell from real 11,580 x 2160 (where the framerate is about 40-45 even in space, so it's a non starter).

Yeah that doesnt come cheap.. 35" is around 1800-2000 euros
34" with 100hz is around 1100-1300 euros.

Also, i think asus sells both free and G-sync models.

That's a lot better than I thought, I coulda sworn the last time I saw it in a shop it was like 3999.

Maybe I'll ask Santa for a monitor for chrimble. Bah, I don't need it, it would be greedy. :)

I told me that i have to decide between the occulus or a good monitor. The Occulus won. I don't regret, but the long time you spend in elite is a killer for the eyes if you play it for hours in VR and no possibility to watch some netflix while flying and i don't recognize my cat sneaking up on me... .

I think after your posts that i have to look out for a new monitor....:-/

No matter how enthusiastic I get, how excited my rhetoric, you are not prepared for the effect of a really good adaptive sync monitor. :) VR is great (I have a CV1 too), but the monitor improves EVERYTHING you do on the PC. :)
