3.0: Week One - Pros and Cons

[up][up][up]

  • + Reward choices from missions. I was only expecting these for Wing missions, so to learn otherwise was a nice surprise. It was nice to get promoted to Lt. Commander for those odd Fed people, because I had the choice of going for rep rewards. I was also able to make loads of friends in the Sol system, a lot quicker than would have been possible in 2.4.
  • + Mining rewards have got a buff. Panite sells for 120K per ton at Boom states. #MinersNeedLoveToo.
  • + Trade Tools. A bit clunky, but useful and more importantly, keeps traders like me in the game instead of using 3rd web sites.
  • + Engineering changes. On the whole I like it, and I was previously in favour of ship engineering variation. I felt I had more control to get what I wanted, and more choice to get exactly what I wanted. Module grind for each module isn't as bad as it sounds because...
  • + ....the grind is reduced for lower-grades when Engineers are repped out and...
  • + ....we have the Material Traders and...
  • + ....we have Remote Engineering.
  • + Experimental effects without losing Engineer rep? Yes please and thanks very much.
  • + Revamped Material storage. Yes! Its amazing how much time is saved thanks to lack of inventory checking, freeing up time for....you know, flying spaceships.
  • + Revamped Module storage. Yes!
  • + Chieftain. All bow before Lakon!
  • + Lakon buffs. Keelback, T7, T9 and T10 all get the buffs they deserve.
  • + Planets look very nice now. Great work, FD!
  • + Galnet Audio. Nice addition.
  • + Tech Brokers. Not used them myself but they look interesting.
  • + Guardian content. As above.
  • + High value piracy targets.
  • + Megaship piracy! Not tried this myself yet but sounds like a great addition.
  • + Salvage is now a proper profession now, with high-credit rewards to be found.
  • + Serious buff for USSes and Material drops. For instance, Datamined Wake Exceptions can now be found in Decoded USSes. I know because I found 3 last night and I wasn't even looking for them.

[down][down][down]

  • - Forget the Thargoids, there's a Wing Mission Invasion going on! These need to be separated from solo missions.
  • - Rewards for Wing Missions aren't balanced, at least for players doing them solo. 'Solo' haulage missions often pay a lot higher, for a lot less cargo.
  • - No data for commodity amount at markets in the Trade tool? That's kinda important for a Trader, no?
  • - Galaxy Map Filter for Material Traders is bugged, and its hard to see the systems highlighted on the map.
  • - 40Ly range rule for Trade Tools & Material Traders isn't mentioned on Galaxy Map. Could do with that 'sphere of influence' effect you see when selecting a control system in Powerplay, to make it clear that only systems within 40Ly are located.
  • - No remote engineering for legacy modules? That's......kinda odd. I know legacy mods need to be converted to the new system but there's no mention of that in the remote engineering screens.
  • - Over 1000 bugs have been fixed....but legacy issues with skimmer missions slipped through testing? (Cue flurry of Nerfzilla threads).
  • - Material Trader conversion trade is heavily skewed towards trading from high-grade materials to lower grades. That's very logical, but I think the conversion from lower to higher is maybe a little too harsh? (6 for 1?)
  • - Galnet Audio. No Imperial content for the galaxy's premier superpower?
  • - Galnet Audio. Not enough of it, only lasts 10 minutes. Nice while it lasts but after that....? Still, early days.
  • - High Yield Shell has been mauled by Nerfzilla - what remains is laughed at by Stock Cannon Hardware. Pointless upgrade now, save your mats for something else, Commanders.
  • - If you're going to add Megaship piracy, how about adding Megaships as a location filter to the Galaxy map? Anyone who wants to rob stuff is going to use 3rd party sites to get this info, when it should be in the game. I'm in Sol. Nearest megaships to there? No idea!
  • - "Hi! I'm opening a material trading business! Where to find me? Haha! You have to find me!"

--------------------------------

In short: A promising beginning for Beyond with all the odd :S issues and Grade 5 :O bugs/legacy issues expected from a game that's getting bigger and more complex with each release.

Locations material traders can be found are:
- Raw Materials Trader - Found at extraction and refinery economies, only trades in raw material found on planet surfaces and planetary rings.
- Manufactured Materials Trader - Found at industrial economies, only trades in manufactured materials.
- Encoded Materials Trader - Found at High Tech and Military economies, only trades in encoded materials.
- Systems also need to be mid to high security systems and have populations between 1,000,000 and 22,000,000.
Materials Trades will not show up in lawless and anarchy systems.
Materials Traders will not show up at stations that are currently controlled by a criminal faction.
Materials Traders will be unavailable when a station is damaged, under repair or put on lockdown.
Horizons is required to use Material traders.
Material traders will appear in the Human Bubble, Colonia and Pleiades regions at economies types listed above.

After finding a system that matches these you can view the stations in system map and see if they have what you need

I sometimes agree with the lack of info cuz this feels like space version of the wild west so information travels slow and is rarely true but then again, you have galnet news at beagle point.

I've been to stations that match those requirements. No Material Trader. Plus people have reported finding Encoded Traders in Extraction systems.

Oh, and:

-Now Mining Missions get removed as well? Did anyone do these missions in beta?

Nice list,a good round up.

Just one issue for me:

- Rewards for Wing Missions aren't balanced, at least for players doing them solo. 'Solo' haulage missions often pay a lot higher, for a lot less cargo.

No reason for wing missions to be balanced around solo players, the quote actually includes the solution, just do the solo trade missions.

Great post. Particularly agree with what I quoted.
In system I'm in last 2 days I can't find many non-wing missions at all and if I do they're not worth taking.
Winged missions on the other hand are plentiful! Hauling in my Python in particular is to the point I'm considering mothballing the beast. Don't need cargo racks to take my 3 data missions for 10k credits
Passenger missions are about all my Python is for lately.

I pretty much agree with your assessment 100%. Regarding the negatives, I'd single out the following:

  • - Material Trader conversion trade is heavily skewed towards trading from high-grade materials to lower grades. That's very logical, but I think the conversion from lower to higher is maybe a little too harsh? (6 for 1?)
  • - Galnet Audio. Not enough of it, only lasts 10 minutes. Nice while it lasts but after that....? Still, early days.

"Hi! I'm opening a material trading business! Where to find me? Haha! You have to find me!"

Yes, indeed! [haha] I’m not sure what the issue is with information sharing in Elite. Even in the 80s and 90s we had the Yellow Pages.

Good list.

Although I would add one more [down]

The new C&P system is confusing and bug ridden. Trespassing is a bounty? No timer for the notoriety? Wanted NPCs in supercruise are suddenly not wanted in normal space? ?

And one more [up]

The rank grind for Imperial/Fed navy is no nearly so bad now and is actually fun.

I would normally say [up] for skimmer missions finally being fixed... but....

dunno,, 120k for painite in boom state and a mission still not really worth it with how low the chance to find painite is. Mining is still off the competition charts.

Sandro approves of your [up][up][up]

He will probably skip the [down][down][down] lol

I find the game is playing me not me playing the game.
It has become more like work than pleasure and don't get me wrong, I still keep looking in on it to see if I can stand the "thrashing it out".
The mats traders are next to useless, I have far more than they do and I can either spend my time looking for the mats I need or waste it trying to find a broker who actually has what I need. Its more frustrating than entertaining.
The missions board has just become a click fest, I feel so sorry for new players coming into this game to find a mass of sub menus. They aren't instinctive and are clunky to navigate.

Its no wonder players are resulting to so called exploits to clock up any impression of progress.

Bottom line, its a great game concept, but the sad truth is, if the over complexity and massive grind isn't balanced with reward, then more players are going to quit in favour of more satisfying and rewarding games.

My biggest beef with the update is the engineering refresh. Why oh why do we have to start from scratch with every mod?? It makes no sense to me at all and as already stated, the brokers are worse than useless.

I am finding it hard to get back into the game myself, let alone encourage the people I play with that this is still a game worthy of their time investment.

Same as i feel about the game. It's become a massive grind fest and when players do find a way of increasing there income within the game some busy body reports it as a exploit to FD. FD then jump on it and hit it with the nerf bat. In the last week FD have nerfed more than ever. I just wish FD did the same for the bugs we suffer from in the game instead of letting us suffer for months on end with no fix in sight. I might for the first time in my time playing this game take some time away from it as its no longer fun.

i was excited to do the guardian mission as they said it was designed for us the players.

then saw that you need Thargoid bits and that's when I went back to the bubble in sadness, I have done none of the Thargoid stuff as I am a casual player and don't have the time to do all the previous stuff.....

Just to add about there nerf bat. When you look at what they have nerfed in the last week. Skimmer missions, mining missions removed the bandwidth meter removed the FPS display. If they fixed bugs as fast i would be a happy player.
