3 days before I can play.

So I decided to play for the first time in a few weeks and there's an update that's going to take 3 days to install. I've no idea what it fixes and can't find any release notes. (Last update installed was 1.5). Not the best way to encourage me to get back into the game I have to say.

Updates on mine always start with an outrageous figure like 2 or 3 days then it comes down rapidly as the update progresses, persevere with it.

Have you tried the alternative download method? Launcher->Options->Alternative Download Method? (AFAIK you have to stop the download before you are able to toggle it)

Well it's much better, down to about 3 hours now. Thanks for your help.

It probably won't take three days. Welcome to Internet gaming ;)

I've been playing games since about 1979 on an Atari console and internet enabled games since the mid 90's on a 56k modem. Nothing has ever taken 3 days to update before. :-D

who are you blaming for your poor connection/ISP choice ?

All the update patch notes are here:

.
Out of interest who is your broadband supplier and location/country and what download/upload speeds are you getting?

Thanks for the patch link, but which patch is it if you don't have horizons? I already checked that list and find it very hard to make any sense of it.

It's not my broadband, steam games update at literally 100 times or more the speed of frontier's own update service.

Hmm, yes it does look confusing for non-Horizons CMDRs. I would say that they are for you as well as there are server updates and such.
The fact that you have already downloaded 1.5 and are needing to update again points to this.
.
I understand you don't think it's your broadband causing the slow Elite update but lots of people mention the slow downloads whereas I've never any issues and they usually complete in well under 10-20 minutes. I was just trying to get a feel for what might be the issue for some people.

I'm saying it won't take three days. Download timers haven't been reliable since the Internet began.

None of the updates have ever taken more than an hour to download for me.

Good for you, but the OP is right. I was the same as you for every update until 2.0.3 (last horizons patch). Downloaded fast with my 50mb connection, then for the last patch I was getting 0.11mb/sec for over an hour. Yet I could stream HD video, speedtest, etc. to validate MY internet was receiving 50mb/s. It was Frontiers servers, just like the OP. I also have steam so I kicked off the download through Steam and viola!! 50mb/s. It happens, it's not his internet it's FD.

Yes I moved to steam version too. As you can see below I have a pretty good connection :) but ED downloads take hours (I have to admit I did not know about the alternative download option, I will try that next time as I have both steam and non steam installed.)
I can download 50gig an hour from steam and a Steam complete download of ED from scratch only takes about 5 mins, but through the non steam launcher it took me several sessions over many nights to get it updated. Very strange.
