3 specialized mother ships.

Most likely I will not bring anything new, I have seen some posts on new ships. I am new to ED and I love it. Thought I would put my 2 cents on the new ship discussion. Because there is room for more ships and modules.

The idea I had was a capital sized ship. But one for each "main" activity I love in ED: combat, mining and exploration.

1. Combat mother ship. This is more of a support ship. Boosting shields, repairing limpets, boosting energy of friendly ships thus improving dps. This ship could also be used as a hangar, where you can go and change your ship, change some modules on ships like weapons. Has firepower but only at close range, just so it can defend itself. Having such a ship with some friends would be pretty nice, would make great fights...but then again medium to large scale fights is not really a thing in ED.

2. Mining mother ship. Huge cargo maybe 2000-3000T capacity. Medium hangar to store your mining ships. Contrary to the combat mother ship that is more of a multiplayer ship, this one could be more of a solo type with some multiplayer capacity. It can boost the distance your mining lasers can mine, maybe even improve life of limpets and distance it can travel from the ship. You bring this capital ship near the asteroids, park it, hop into your mining ship and start mining. Can organize nice mining excursions with your friends. I could also see interesting mining missions that could be created for this ship. Or even make bigger, badder community goals.

3. Exploration mother ship. This is my fav one. Inspired by the generation ships, but on a smaller scale and with hyperspace traveling capabilities. This ship could be used for exploration of systems far far away. With a capacity of jumping several 100 Ly at a time, but having to refuel each time, thus limiting exploiting this capacity. It has some cargo capacity, hangar to bring exploration ships. Room to store several spare SRVs. An advantage of this ship is the ability to directly record new discoveries in the codex. You could also land on planets and make it a small temporary base. With some refitting, refueling capabilities. And with a good size storage capacity, you can store your discoveries (that Frontier would have to implement) like new minerals, artifacts, ancient crashed ships, strange plants, or even living creatures, etc. They could also improve on the syntesis and have some more complexe crafting, like basic modules, basic ships. Allowing us to create and adjust to our needs when far away.

So these are a few basic ideas I had. Nothing much, just ships I would like to see in ED. Have these mother ships cost like billions and expensive to operate, especially the exploration one. Because I have billions of credits and don't know what to do with them.
 
Never gave them much thought, though the best way to utilize them is as a mobile platform to "project power" much like a station would, on a smaller scale. The ways you describe are all really cool.

IIRC the idea for Fleet Carriers was that a Squadron could own (buy? build?) one and this capship would act like a mobile dock/base for the squadron. From what I interpret it as, you couldn't actually fly the ship per se, but give it executive decisions/commands, much like a captain would to the helm, to jump or move about.

My guess is that you can probably select from a list of destinations, much like your left Nav panel, and tell the Carrier where to go, intra or inter-system.
