Newcomer / Intro 30 years an "ELITE" player

Hey all,

Just introducting myself, have the Mercenary edition and just had to get it and couldn't believe that "ELITE" was going to get a modern version and like many on the forums here it's something that is considered to be an iconic game which has brought so much pleasure and indeed "pain" too. The only versions of "ELITE" that i have not owned or played were the DOS, Apple 2 or NES editions but all the other's i do still own and pretty much collectable these days.

I have to say that ED is indeed everything that i hoped it could be and even more besides, yes it's "ELITE" as we remember and a whole lot more than that as well, it's bigger and better in every regard but i do worry about how modern gamers will judge it as i'm more than sure it's something that they have never experienced in their gaming life before and sure enough the steam release comes along and the very toxic nature of that community (which really saddens me) and generally is abusive so i do hope that the MOD's can handle that and everything thast comes with it.

One thing steam aside has shown is that gamers go into this game as just another space/arcade shooter and not prepared for the indepth lore and lurning curve required but at least in this version of the game there are tutorials available even if most are skipping them and then up with a dozen questions or more complaining or moaning about this or that feature so in this regard those of us that have been playing "ELITE" for many years do have a head start and laudling the quite excellent experience that ED has become. I really do hope that everyone enjoys the game once they put some effort into learning the game and will then be rewarded.

BTW am loving the limited edition chrome skin for my beloved "COBRA" and skins are generally adding something to the game and all look pretty amazing so keep up the good work frontier and hopes everyone will enjoy this classic, i personally am having a great time with this version.

Yes I am another original player from the old Elite and I do wonder why some players treat Elite as a shoot-em up. But then again those players normally get bored and leave.
Seems a lot of players in a rush.

Yes most players now have been used to easy and short games, bit of a culture shock for them playing ED but nice to see some veterans here at least.

Welcome aboard Sir! I am an Elite player from ye goode ole eighties too. The gameplay hasn´t suffered a bit over the years and with the new graphics and sounds together with new input controllers, this game has become a dream coming true.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and good to have you on board :)

See you in the void!

Thanks all,

Always great to hear back from older players and their views on modern remakes or reboots of a loved game, see you all around the galaxy commanders.

Same here - I had the Commodre 64 version, my cousin played on his BBC Micro.. Wish I still had my box set now! :D Really glad to see how it has hardly changed - it was all about gameplay and escapism for me.

There are a lot of us eighties players here. ED has probably one of the matures player bases of any game. So welcome to the Silver Spacers :D

Totally agree with you on how the game hasn't varied much to this day so a very big plus point but still great to see how the game has evolved especially from a control point of view, yes outside of the BBC version the C64 was probably (on 8 bits at least) the next best version even if it was slightly slower but the gameplay was what made it a CLASSIC.

I was just a kid when Elite hit my C64 and it was way too hard for me- I didn't miss the chance on Frontier and First Encounter! :D
I'm really loving this. My wife is NOT, though. :p

Right on, Commander!

84er here also, from C64 through Amiga to PC (and even Galaxy on Fire 2 on iPhone) :)) .Remember, before undocking, clean up those denture, you can't ride the old horse on empty stomach :)

Because it's a viable play style. The game has quite a few play styles, so pick the one that suits you. You'll also find that there are a great many players from back in the day. I waited until Elite came out on the C64 since I wasn't a fan of the BBC or the Spectrum. :)

I think most modern players are just seeing it as a shooter and not interested in the other parts so get bored and not really interested in exploring the main points of the game, bit of a shame really as there is far more to the game than just one play style but the combat is pretty darn good if you ask me and much more involving than it ever has been but i do like a bit of smuggling personally and has it's own rewards.

I hated the rubber keys on the Spectrum... it was horrible! Manic Miner was far better on the C64 anyway, much better sound ;)

Oldest memory I have of PC games was playing 3D Monster Maze on a ZX81 with a 16K RAM pack, which was the size of a half brick :D Many hours spent typing something in from a magazine, then more hours finding your single spelling or punctuation error that prevented it from running... only to find it was crap anyway... oh the joy ;)

10 PRINT "OCTOPOID IS ACE"
20 GOTO 10
RUN....

As a player of Elite II I knew what I loved and kept me playing that game, and I'm so happy to find ED has the same feel and complex, compulsive nature but with lots of new innovations appropriate to a modern game.

I was thrilled when I was a little stuck, just pressed enter and explained I was new and had a question, and the answer came straight back.

After reading the forums, I half expected announcing I was new would draw a swift attack from someone taking advantage but it never came.

The only thing that happened was one player appeared to try to reverse into me playfully as we waited for a free dock.

We all had our favourite systems back then and i never was one for the flamewar but yes you are right about the Spectrum keys, they sure did stick most of the time and those type ins were a great feature back then even if most of them you had to add something to them to get them working, frustration and joy at the sametime !!
