30 years passed, some features lost some improoved haha ;-)

Hey like the title,

30 years in game developement... what do you think when you compare wingcomander 1 with elite ^^

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nDa9uHuDNM

so we have front, side and rear shields, we have already wings and a pretty deep story with nice mission briefing.
we have 3d flying... sure graphics are crap, but hey its a 10mhz cpu and an even worse graphic card. the sound is awefull, but hey they just came out with some sound cards.
you have inside station, a bar where you can hang around and chat with NPC.. you have a killboard and some nice rankings.

just to compare, we gained graphics, we gained sound, we lost depth and ambience, thats what i think.. and tbh i bet they had way less to develop such games :)

Cheers

Wing commander is not 30 years old.

This is

Edit:

Also, WC is a Space Adventure game. You fly branching missions and watch cut scenes.

Both are space sims, only but so much can change.
Look at the first Flight Sim vs The best out out now....

You also left out the MMO part, player changing economy, better physics simulation....etc
Games back then also didn't have DLC, so all the things you listed can be added.

Probably sums up how I felt about WC at the time: Amiga power review May 1994

What wing commander is, in fact, is some shoot-em-up sections linked together by some pilot-bit type characters where you talk to other characters. The latter are unbearably dull, and you'll rapidly grow to hate them.

The shoot-'em-up sections, meanwhile, aren't very good either. You stare out of the window of your spaceship waiting for a baddie to come into range. When it does you move up, down, left, right to bring it into your sights and then you shoot it. Then you do again and again until all the aliens die. Then your back at base wading through another load of 'conversations'.

I know it's sacrilege to say such things now :) but I didn't understand the hype and it just seemed like a way to justify hideously expensive PC purchases back in the day.

Starlancer is a far superior game!
