36 Ophiuchi

I recently had a break from the game while I waited for 2.4 to drop and when I climbed back into my Corvette a week or so back the game felt a little hollow prompting me into starting again from scratch.

My new (30th) CMDR settled in over at Wolf 562, it ticks most of the boxes I look for in a home system. It’s high tech, has a starport just 34ls from the star and it has a fairly convenient High RES for kicking some butt and boosting rep.

It wasn’t long before I was back in a trusty Viper 4, running low on funds I began scouring the mission boards for opportunities. It was then that I spotted an anomaly over in the passenger lounge, crazy transport missions to Katzenstein Dock in 36 Ophiuchi which is just 7ly away.

...Katzenstein is a starport 4 million ls into the system (it’s a real time hour) which accounts for the inflated prices.

Loaded up my Viper with 20mil worth of passengers and booted up Netflix. On my return I decided to try out a ship I hadn’t tried before, the Type 7 (actually love it) and I’m now on my way back with a staggering 113mil worth of passengers.

Anyone else been out this way?

Yes and no. The very first day I played the game back in GPP I got stuck with no fuel on the way to one of the stations out there!! I tried everything I could, even had another CMDR come looking for me before wings and wing beacons were working properly. I was firing off weapons trying to make myself as obvious a heat signature as possible for them to find me. (in the end I lost out to the Remlok system and died a slow death). Funnily enough it made me love the game even more when I realised it was that hardcore.

Sad times! :-(

It’s definitely a real hike! Totally shreds your ship each visit...

Credits are amazing though, just bought an Orca cos....why not.... :)

In a system now making an average of 200m per run in a 192 economy cabin conda to a station less than half that distance, made over 12 billion so far....

Sure, but I just restarted 48 hours ago. I have a vastly lower trade rank than yourself and no ‘conda... :)

Will see how it goes!

No thanks.
I'll give these mega billionaire type bore fest runs a definitive miss.
However if this floats your boat, sail on, it certainly is rapid credits.

I really should give these passenger missions a try, I have done a couple of local ones when they were first added but I really haven't made even the slightest dent in them. Reckon I like the sound of the Hutton Run style in-system jobs, but then I do like the whole space trucking thing. The distant Star destination stuff doesn't really appeal that much, though. I think it's probably the explorer in me, I'd hate to go all the out somewhere that someone has already been to and then have to come back rather than keep going! :D

Any recommendations on ships, too? I know only some ships can carry luxury cabins but don't really know which and in what quantity or which type/mix of cabins are more useful. Guess the obvious ships are Orca/Dolphin but are there any other viable options?

The best bet is to get a ship and stuff it with as many economy class cabins as possible. When you take missions, get the passengers who aren't VIPs (they don't have a little crown next to the suitcase). That means they can share a cabin, so you can keep stacking until all cabins are full.

Any of the big ships are good here. Beluga isn't as good as Anaconda, but it is a lot cheaper. Bizarrely, I think the ship that can carry the most passengers in the all-economy configuration is the Federal Corvette...

If you intend to go, take a ship that can take in as many economy passenger cabins as you can, the higher end ones are not worth it for the missions you will want to take. Don't take VIP missions, take weapons and shields as you will be interdicted and know that the travel time in this system is 1 hour and about 10 minutes (including interdictions and combat).

although this place pays well per passenger, the pay per hour is not necessarily the best because you can make only about 1 trip every 2 hours unless you are highly ranked and allied with the different factions giving missions.

I would suggest perhaps going to systems around LTT 9360, slightly less pay per customer, but a 45 minute trip instead of over an hour. you could do two trips in the time you would fill out and do one trip for 36 Ophiuchi.

I've done both and will probably continue doing both when I need money or feel bored and want to be "productive" but in my opinion, LTT 9360 is slightly better even if the payout per trip is less simply because I can have a more varied day in game (and seeing 0.14LY starting distance and not having it go down for several minutes is more depressing than seeing 1.8 million LS but having it go down from the first moment).

So take a ship stuffed with economy passenger cabins, protect it, give yourself at least 4 cargo space to be able to turn in missions and make money for bigger and bigger ships ;)

Ship choice mostly depends on how many credits you’re looking to make. You can do it in one of the cheaper ships with two class 4 economy cabins and expect to make from 10-20m (depends on luck/time & your current trade rank). A Type6 is naturally a good starter choice. I’ve not seen any luxury missions out this way so I wouldn’t concern yourself with those.

Thanks, Cmdr's. Some good info there. Still very green when it comes to this passenger business :D

Not really fussed about how much money I make from it, lucky enough to be rolling in it but I won't complain if I make enough to cover the cost of the ship and fitting it out :D

Might get me another Cutter and kit it out as you recommended. Thank again, Cmdr's :D
