Newcomer / Intro 360 Controller - I cant see how !

You don't need to download anything. In the controller setup dropdown list look for something like "controller with yaw", that is the setting for using the 360 pad.

I put that file into the bindings folder but it still doesn't show anything other than keyboard with mouse - empty - keyboard

No other options exist.

Really appreciate the fast replies people !

In the options there's several control schemes. Keyboard and mouse, controller (Xbox), HOTAS. I started out using the xbox controller, but quickly switched to a HOTAS, which is a vast improvement. If I could give you a suggestion, grab a HOTAS whenever you can, and use that; it will improve your experience 100 fold. If you don't want to shell out the money for a HOTAS, you should grab voice attack, and some voice commands.

I have no options for anything other than the three options

That said I have looked up HOTAS and bought one straightaway - still doesn't help me config it but I'm a little more excited and would love either to work !

Did you install the drivers for the xbox controller?

Works fine with my ps3 controller emulating an xbox controller so it's down to come configuration on your end.

Yes its the config on my end because I haven't used it on any other game

Installed fine but doesn't show up on the list in game.

The drivers are installed perfectly with no issues

Ive read loads of threads but just cant get it to show ....

Windows 7 - if that helps ?

Hmmm can't really help I'm afraid other than reboot your system and start again.

Some times I have to do a roll back for my Xbox 360 controller on my windows 7 platform. Check your system section on your computer. Also once you plug in your HOTAS, the game should recognize it, and you should be set; though you may want to go into training mode and configure your HOTAS settings to your liking. I hope that helps

Does it show up in the list of game controllers?

> Windows key
> type "game"
> Select "set up USB game controllers"
> A dialog box with all the controllers attached to the system will show.
> If your controller shows there, double click it and you will be able to test axes and buttons and the like.
> If it doesn't show, something went wrong with the driver installation process and you should unplug, remove the drivers and start again.

Also is it a third party controller? I have read that Elite Dangerous has issues with third party (Mad Catz, etc.) 360 controllers.

Lastly, I notice that my controller needs to be plugged in before I start the game in order for it to be recognized.

I have a rockcandy 360 controller and windows 8. Plugged it in and it was recognised straight away, sorted out key bindings. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. I can only suggest its a windows prob and not ED. Sorry.

Just to be sure, have you tried plugging the controller into another USB port? Or have you noticed the light around the Xbox button flickering, especially when the controller's wire bends and moves? Do you have any other possible way to test out the controller? To be clear, I'm not asking those questions to be demeaning- it's just that something simple or seemingly insignificant is often the culprit behind people's technical issues. Plus, before you try more complex solutions you want to rule out all possible problems of a simpler nature.

I'll also check out my controller options in a bit to see if there's something I can suggest. Concerning off-brand controllers not working, I've used both actual MS Xbox controllers and third party controllers (Gamestop refurbished, not sure of the brand) and they all worked after installation.
