This is an older game developed by Microsoft back in 2000. The game is still alive and community-run. 100% Free to Play. It's a mix of Real Time Strategy with economy and research, paired with the First-Person shooter of piloting the ships.
Combat style is similar to ED, but with more emphasis on close combat, side-thrusting, and manually aiming your shots.
Researching and expanding can be compared to Age of Empires. Building techbases (similar to Barracks, archery range, siege workshop, etc) yields you different technology and ships. Stealth fighters, intercepters, space superiority fighters. Each techbase also has different endgame technology. Stealth bombers, Troop Transports, fighter/bombers.
Games are setup and launched in game lobbies with team vs team setups. There are different factions to pick with different attributes. How fast they can research technology, how good their economy runs, how good their early game/late game is, etc.
The vast majority of ships are player driven. Only a small amount of ships are CPU controlled.
The community is small, but dedicated and active. It's not the prettiest game in the world (we've got texture mods to fix that), but it's got a lot of substance with its strategy and combat. Think Halo: CE.
If you're interested, check out the forums and give the game a try sometime over the weekend. As I said, the community isn't huge. You usually get quality games in the evening and over the weekend.

You can see different wormholes called "alephs" in the video. Maps (bottom left of the screen) work in a similar way to ED. There are different "sectors" that are traveled to. The way to travel to them is through different alephs on the map. Controlling sectors highlights the sector in your team's color.
