3d VR?? wowee :)

When I first got Elite (March 2016) I set it up on the monitor.
Then I noticed a 3d option in Graphix Options. "Interesting", I thought.
Tried it with a pair of red-blue lensed cinema 3d specs I had lying around.
Wasnt really impressed ( Im shortsighted in left eye, longsighted in right eye) colours bled and it
was uncomfortable to play, same with watching 3d movies. Not fun.

Then last week a friend was going on holiday and loaned me his DK2.
Oh my..
he had the "normal eyesight" lenses fitted, they were a bit blurry for me so I changed them to the
other set in the box, the ones with the shorter "tunnel" length.

I can only say you guys are so lucky, Elite is BEAUTIFUL in 3d.
Pity I only have the DK2 'til this Saturday.

Im off to write a letter for Santa :D

I too have nothing but loathing and hatred for '3d' gaming or movies.
I have honestly yet to even start to watch a 3d Blu-ray without starting to think "dear Lord this is dumb" and swap to the 2d version that I know I will enjoy.

VR, well that I can't get enough of. Ever!
I have however tried 3d movies in vr and I honestly still end up preceding the 2d versions.
It's the faux diorama style '3d' without any form of head tracking that seem to be annoy me so much or something.

Same here. I started playing Elite with a 55" TV connected to my computer. Who needs all this 3D stuff, when you have a large screen? Well, that thought died the day i tried a DK2... and resulted in a Rift CV1 pre-order. No going back from VR - never ever. I am already saving money for the CV2, regardless when it will be available.
After a year i still start to smile when lifting off from a planet and the galaxy rises on the horizon. Elite in VR is vacation.

indeed. avid VR user since middle of 2014, and some genres i just have no interest in playing - even on my 70 inch tv.

this summer sale has cost me a pretty penny, all vr stuff.

I've seen the DK2's going for about £100 on the fleabay there is one going for £109 or best off now.

Really? wow ebay well who would guess thanks for reminding me.. never mind waiting for Santa.. I guess I need a HOTAS in some shape or form as well lol :)
awesome :)

just be aware the DK2 is no longer officially supported. it works but not as well as it used to (ipd adjustments etc gone i believe?)

i am not saying dont do it. the DK2 did me proud for almost 2 years but it may be close to end of life. (that said i guess steamvr may carry on working)

What he said. Also used a large screen TV and the graphics were great, but VR changed that. Haven't played ED in 2d since.

I certainly don't need or want 3d on any screen cause quite frankly it's not 3d.
Very happy to see tv manufacturerers dropping this feature, but that's beside the point.

I still enjoy 2d games, but those are games I just can't play in vr and often on the couch with the xbx controller oculus sent with the cv1, been replaying the Batman arkham, and saints row series.

As for elite, I'm tootling around those new thargoid stuff and it's honestly some of the best I have had so far in vr.

VR also seem to influence what ship I pick for certain tasks.
Take this latest trip to the Pleiades. Instead of going with obvious asp or conda I took my fdl.
It's got a 19ly jump range so not horrible, and thst canopy is almost like flying around with the top down.

Ugh!

With respect have you actually played a game in proper 3D, a game set up properly? Like using 3D vision, proper depth (100%) and convergence? This game with the fix? Not ED's from the menu 3D but proper 3D?

As a 3D gamer. 3D games on PC using 3D vision are STUNNING and brilliant.

I am yet to find a single person who isn't blown away by 3D games. I have shown 100s of people. S3D, not fake 3D, when executed properly is NOT A GIMMICK. S3D was destroyed by NVidia (hiding convergence setting!?!?!?!?!?!?! WHAT? and setting the default depth to 10% Huh?) and movie (greed with software 3D conversions - fake 3D)

This game, The Witcher 3, Skyrim, loads and loads of others: Mind blowing.

I teach, I demonstrated 3D to a media teacher who held the same views as you, he loathed 3D movies and gaming. I showed him Portal 2. In the time it took from the beginning for the game to fade to white (less than 5 seconds) he announced it wasn't a gimmick. He now is careful to distinguish between movie and gaming.

3D in gaming is STELLA
3D in movies is typically pants (CGI / cartoons are good, live action is pants)

The 3D you see in VR Elite is like what you see in 3D. True you don't get the sense of presence but you do get the depth and the extra visual informational cues your brain picks up.

i agree with a lot of this... apart from the last bit. VR and 3D are different beasts. they have the same ancestor in the evolutionary tree but they are now worlds apart.

the rest tho you are spot on. gaming in 3D can be fantastic. check out trine 2 (not you as you already are a convert) but this supports 3D with no need for extra software if you have 3D telly. its beautiful.

gears of war 3 on xbox, was fantastic. shame that the console was pushed to breaking and had to saccrifice a lot. i was super dissapointed it was ripped from gears 4 as my pc would nail it. Same deal with uncharted..... 3D on uncharted 3 on ps3 was fab... but it was removed from the uncharted collection on PS4 - a shame as i was ready to play the whole trilogy in 3D on my ps4pro.

home 3D is dead. i do mourn its passing esp now 3D tech is where it needs to be for the home. 4k TVs with passive 3D, but it came too late :( .

Yeah, fair enough!

I personally think a great deal of the Wow! effect of VR comes from the stereoscopy however. Obviously the *true* head tracking and the FOV are also major parts.

I do however think the stereoscopy is the most significant. Why? Because 360 videos. Most of these have headtracking and FoV but without the S3D (2D but at depth). But when you do add 3D to the mix (usually computer generated 360 scenes) the difference is
night and day.

But proper VR does use S3D, true headtracking and FoV so as you say, it is a different beast to what I like to call VR-lite, which is S3D, with pseudo headtracking.

That said, I really believe VR-lite is worlds apart from, is a totally different beast and remains so much greater than 2D.

Which is why I am so easily triggered when people slate 3D! :/

Elite in VR blows my mind every time. But 3D gaming can be good, too. For example, I played Elite on my 60-inch plasma TV with active 3D before I got a Rift. On the TV, Elite looked great in 3D with tons of depth and pop. But not all 3D TVs offer the same experience, and red-blue 3D would probably suck with any hardware.

Hey, 3D movies can be awesome. Dredd 3D is awesome.

3D movies shot in 3D usually look great when watching in 3D. For example, Avatar, Prometheus and Hugo look amazing in 3D. Even 3D movies with good 3D conversions, such as Rogue One, can look good in 3D.

But most of the 3D films the past few years, especially big blockbusters such as Marvel movies, offer crap 3D conversions that totally suck. For example, Captain America Civil War looked awful in 3D.

But movies that are conceived and/or shot in 3D can be awesome.

Yeah! That's the effect. When I tried my CV1 for the first time, I was like simply ... happy. Looking around with mouth open. I hope you get a CV1 to try Elite. The resolution is way better than the DK2. Look better. I was a bit disappointed by the low res when I tried the DK2 for the first time. But the overall experience was amazing.

Yes even mining is brilliant in VR.

I have a second hand DK2 that I got from CEX for £140 (100 in cash plus some old games) - had already tried CV1 on my brother in laws pc and to be honest I see little quality difference in Elite between the two - if like me, Elite is the only game that interests you in VR then a cheapo dk2 is still a good buy.
And the main reason I like it ? - I don't need to use my reading specs in VR - since about 1 year ago I can no longer sit in front of anything short of a 42" Plasma (and no, I'm not joking here) without needing reading specs to make out text - was literally in the midle of a mission in the division last January when I suddenly realised I couldn't make out the damn writing on screen - if it weren't for VR I might have to become a console gamer - and I loathe game controllers :p
